One common issue as these cars are getting on in years is timing chain stretch. This particular car had previously had its chain replaced incorrectly and was running very poorly as a result.
Here's some tips and tricks to help you if you're looking at a replacement.

I had the same issue on my BK... this is actually a known issue and there was actually a recall done in America on these cars incl. CX7... Living in RSA I had to fight with the dealership and Motor Warranty guys as their technicians didn't detect any issue with my chain becasue the car was still driving and the Diagnostic didn't detect any issues... here is another tip which i did to eventually convince them... wait until the motor has cooled down, then remove the oil cap and place your finger onto the belt, then see if you can lift the belt up. There should not be any slack, my belt i could actually take off the pulley with the amount of slack it had :O i eventually got my chain and tensioner replaced because of the fight i put up - they still deny anything was wrong... thanks for the great vid and making people aware

Thanks for the tips. I havn’t found mine to be particularly sooty though, I’ve got 245,000k’s on it and after a 10,000k service interval the oil is still golden if you put a few drops on a piece of white cardboard. And my chain only just started to rattle last week, i think that’s pretty decent mileage from a chain on a performance model 👍🏻
What year? Seriously the original chain lasted until almost 250k????

Hey mate I have a 2007 Mazda 3 and there is an rattle coming from the engine.
As described the rattle is there sometimes as soon as the engine is started but is quiet noticeable while driving especially above 2400 rpm.
Driving up a hill when backing off the accelerator the engine rattles a lot.
It doesn’t sound like a big end and it hasn’t developed into anything louder over the last month of driving but sounds more like a top end rattle.
In your experience have you come across this type of scenario?

Hi I have a 2007 speed 6 it has 135,000 on the clock I noticed the chain rattle I was looking into replacing the chain and doing a carbon cleaning. Is it worth investing the money in this service? Th car is in good condition.

Hi, I'm a 16 year old who got an 08 speed3 for $600 in the U.S. It has low compression in cylinders 2 and 3. I am trying to get the head off to check for warpage and check the head gasket. Also, I broke the connector on the VVT solenoid while removing the valve cover. Do I need to take the engine out of the car to get the head off? And do have any tips? (the car has 206K miles)

I have a 2010 Mazda 3 with a non turbo 2.5 motor with a little over 150,000 miles. I hear a rattle noise when I'm traveling 30 mph at 1,200rpm. When I give it more gas it goes away. Is the timing chain failing?
I get a rattle when it warms up…could that be chain starting to fail? Or maybe tensioner beginning to fail?

My engine had really dirty oil. i just been busy with work and school and forgot to schdule an oil change. The other day the engine light came on throwing p0017 code. This was followed by a slightl clicking or light rattle at 2000 rpm. But other than that it sounds smooth at start up and at above 2300 rpm
i changed the oil and put syntetic oil, the engine light has gone away and the car drives smoother, but the click is still sometimes there. For example if im in idle and i rev till 2000rpm its there but when im driving it doesnt seem to be there.
i was going to clean out the oil contol valve today and see if that fixes the slight rattle.
do you think the ocv would be the culprit, or do you suggest checking something else?

Hi guys, I have a 2006 Mazda 3 MPS and I get a slight knocking but only when the engine is warm, when cold it idles and sounds fine. Any suggestions as I just purchased from a dealer. Thanks.
iv got a the same issue dealers use really cheap nasty oil 3k km later i had to i put in some better oil (magnatec) in mine made a big difference guna use edge next time but i think the timing chain and vvt thing need changing
So when the cams are locked and chain is removed, should the VVT sprocket move at all ? Getting about 1/2 tooth of free play in mine. Chain guides look brand new but tensioner is about 1/3rd of way extended out. 2011 with 120k miles. Getting cold rattle for a second or two cold or warm. Thanks for the vid.
Could be the VVT locking pin is bad or not locking.
I have the gen 2 with about 110k miles, I hear that rattling you talk about but I'm also having the vehicle sort of sputter and jerk on high boost. Is this related as well?
Did u ever found out what was the problem? Having same issue , the rattle and the misfires ... Also i think mine sometimes. Goes into limp mode... Cause i dont get full power sometimes... Completely. Stock 145.000 miles 2012

Is it dangerous to keep driving it if you have that problem?
I just opened up my 6 MPS to fix a slight leak from the rocker cover (a workshop pulled the cover off when trying to diagnose an engine misfire and didn't replace the gasket). The issue turned out to be a fuel injector... Anyway, I noticed that the chain has plenty of slack. I can wiggle it quite a bit. What is the urgency on replacing the chain and VVT? I haven't got the parts yet and still need to drive it.

To anyone reading this- Replace the tensioner and chain right away! I did the same , replaced my valve cover gasket and and noticed the chain was pretty loose.. a few months later I break an exhaust valve and my cams are not in sink anymore. The chain jumped a couple of teeth. I don't know much about the VVT and if that needs to be replaced or not.
@@craigzilla100 If you're going to the trouble of replacing the cam chain, you'd be silly not to replace the VVT pulleys at the same time. It's a known failure point on this engine ;-)
So my car just jumped timing I'm pretty sure, do you guys have any advice on how to reset it?

Hi there I have Mps 2008 when i start the car it makes rattle noise however a sec its gone no other noise while driving only on start....any idea why is that

@@chrisv81488 timing chain streched possibly,it does tighten itself with oil pressure which is why it rattles at start up due to the oil pressure still building,if it rattles for more than say 1.5-2 seconds id start to worry

I have a 2005 Mazda 3 with 2.3 liter not turbo I have replaced timing chain and everything around it besides the faiser and oil pump the oil light faint flashing and still throw p0012 code which is intake camshaft over retarded how do I fix that problem for good?

Do some research before you expose your ignorance as "fact". This system is actuated hydraulically at the cam gear, which is driven by what, do you think?
If you listen to the whole video, it's pretty clear what he's talking about.
