Now I wish someone makes a mod to make the Nether even more perilous to journey through, and much more _freaky._

This whole warp thing is kind of becoming a bit more real. Recent headlines about consciousness link to articles about scientists now believing that consciousness itself exists in the quantum realm. Famously the realm of entanglement that connects atoms to each other at all distances. So a realm of consciousness that has the ability to connect far off places to each other. A place that one might imagine if you could access it would allow you to travel to far off places and also be populated by strange and terrifying aspects of thought and emotion.

    • @henrychurch6062

@@andrewgolubiewski3463 Ehh, 1 or 2 fringe scientists making a 'wouldn't it be neat if' article with an idea that cannot be proven or disproven isn't really science though.
I'm pretty jaded. So when I see "Recent headlines about consciousness link to articles about scientists now believing that" I have to ask myself
      -what headlines?
      -where are these headlines?
      -what are the articles?
-Are those articles from an accredited source?
-Why do the scientists believe in this?
      -Who are these scientists?
      -Are they qualified?
      -Where was this peer reviewed?
      -WAS it peer reviewed?
-Exactly what repeatable experiments did they do to come to this conclusion?
And after thinking about it for 5 seconds you can easily come to the conclusion this just isn't true.
And then we get to the stranger parts like "also be populated by strange and terrifying aspects of thought and emotion" Populated? Like by real physical sentient beings? And they are made of thoughts and emotions?
I would wager no scientists believe this at all.

    The way I understand it;
In the warp, left might mean down and right may be back in time. If it's calm, that just stays consistent.
A warp current is that direction faster. You're going that direction, or fighting that force.
A turbulent warp or warp storm are currents that change fast. They're bad because that shear force may have the left half of your ship going forward and the right half going back in time.

It's seems like the warp was a lot calmer place before the Slaanesh storm after the dark age. There are references to human worlds beyond the light of the astronomicon. Golden age ships either had just straight up better Gellar fields that didn't need navigators or it was just easier. Probably something like what pertty made for magnus before he broke it.

I am not saying a third eye mutation would be impossible for someone out of Terra’s sphere, but it is impractical given the lore. Iirc, the chance of a navigator being born out of Terra is next to zero assuming they didnt already descend navigators.
Ironically, you probably have a better chance with just a sane if not not so powerful Psyker because chances are, they are more common then a navigator. Just train them a bit or something.

My understanding of Warp travel is that the bulk of the Imperium's merchant fleet (which is actually the majority of Imperial ships) rely primarily on blind jumps. They utilize Warp lanes, which are historically "calm" regions of the Warp they can jump through without the need of a Navigator. Navigators are reserved for vessels that do not frequently follow set routes, such as warships, Rogue Trader vessels, or Inquisitorial black ships (which are different from the Astra Telepathica black ships, confusingly). There are also still Imperial ships that have no Warp capability whatsoever, usually from either more primitive but still industrialized worlds or from worlds that are so close that sub-light travel only takes a few years.

Warp travel is very naval coded. So it tracks that warp storms are very similar to tropical storms. A storm massive and intense that travel is near impossible and if big enough can cause significant damage to mainland areas. But once they hit land the storm starts dropping in strength and will end much sooner. Very similar to a hurricane.

My favorite and both most and least accurate description of the warp:
"The common mode of space travel in setting is literally ripping a hole into hell, flying into it, and then ripping your way back out...all while a likely crazy man is at the wheel, and you are praying not that you survive, nor even you arrive exactly at your destination and/or on time...no you pray to your God(s) that nothing notices you on the way, and no one is dumb or crazy enough to let any hitchhikers tag along"
In unrelated notes a key horror aspect my freind wrote for his naucent psyker char in rouge trader is that "something" did notice him the first warp jump he had made and since has been stalking him...slowly growing closer and closer, only he senses it...and it just follows him across the galaxy (explaining why he is tagging along with the party to the most dangerous spaces across the galaxy) he is terrified if he ever stops for a particularly long period of time it catches up to him.

And they also do an emergency return to real space from a failure of said Gellar field by using a gravitational well. Aka you cna only jump OUT easily if there is something like the gravity of a a star system to helo you pull out.

5:23 um akctually bricky. The Tau do use the warp. They just don't have navigators. Instead of doing full warp dives like humanity do, the Tau skim along the edge of warp space, never going deep but still using it for short hops.
There are actually 2 methods of Tau FTL that both use the warp. The gravitic drive that skims that warp along the space between realspace and the warp and the slipstream module that actually enters the warp (kind of abandoned after it created the startide nexus)

The thing about the need for psykers in the gellarfield engine was a continuity error in the indomidus lore if I am not very mistaken. Because gellar fields existed before humanity discovered psykers it kinda doesnt make sense that they would always need psykers to fuel the field. So GW changed that lore bit that humanity forgot how to fix the gellar fields properly so they came up with the psyker dream fix.

imagine a crew on a ship that travels through the warp and ends up in a warp ship graveyard, where the dead souls on board loudly sing horrible space shanties from other languages, or multiple centuries in the past or futures, and to the crew's horror, some of the ones they can understand have certain words and themes swapped out to portend horrible imminent doom. Maybe during a crusade, a ship and its crew are on the brink of death, during their lowest point, and they make an emergency jump into the warp, only to hear ghostly singing coming from an eerily similar vessel to their own...

I mentioned this on a previous episode but it's also relevant here: according to everything I could find on it, the Tau use the warp for faster than light communication, but not so much for travel. They have AI piloted drone space ships that can do all the same navigating of the warp that the imperial navigators do, but since it's just a machine with no souls aboard the warp entities can't really tell the difference between it and an asteroid. So even though they don't have Gellar field tech they can still send these AI messenger ships loaded up with data and communications through the warp from system to system. It's basically a self driving mail truck flying through the warp all sneaky like.
