Review: 2022 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hatchback (Manual)

  • I spend a week with the 2022 Honda Civic Sport Touring Hatchback with the manual transmission to see how it compares to the previous generation car and how it compares to the other manual hatchback competitors. With an as-tested price of about $31,000, it's the most expensive in its segment, but it also offers the most features and the most space, with a roomy backseat and relatively large hatch. Like all other 11th generation Civics, the Sport Touring Hatch is a joy to drive and there's a lot to like about it if the price doesn't put you off. What do you think about the 2022 Civic Hatchback? Thanks to Honda for providing this vehicle to review!

    If Honda made this hatch in a Si it would be the perfect car for me. Limited slip and more power, it would also fit my mountain bike. Yes I know there's a Integra coming but I like the European styling of the Civic better, the cheaper price, and the shorter length (179 vs.186) which would fit in my garage.

      It’s as if you didn’t read my comments:I like the Civic STYLING BETTER, The CHEAPER PRICE, THE SHORTER LENGTH , (7 inches shorter) I wish it came in A SI Hatch.

    • @remotecontrolaxe
      @remotecontrolaxe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah totally fair, I also don't want the extra length, but I might be willing to deal with it, depending on the difference between how they drive. We'll have to see when it comes out.

      I waited to see the Si reviews before buying my 6-speed ST hatch Oct/Nov 2021, and you hit it on all my notes - the hatch utility and shorter length and better lux over the Si mattered more to me than the LSD and the rev matching. Yes there are more performance bits than that in the Si, but those are the main ones, and for $400 or so I got a CARB legal Hondata tune that brings it up nearly to stock Si performance.
      As Matt notes in this review, with this car being a "fun daily driver" that will never see the track, the times the LSD would actually matter to me are few and far between (maybe if you got one wheel in mud, or possibly some kinds of snow when you have only summer or not-great all-season tires).
      And the Integra, now that I've seen it, I also find disappointingly styled and longer - like you, those 7 inches saved matter a lot to me for my parking situation! They basically just made the Si rear lift up, instead of making an Acura "Si version of the ST hatch".
      To snag one of the very first available 2022 ST hatchbacks with a manual and the HPD kit and in my preferred color (white... given that blue was not available), I did pay about $3K over MSRP - not in a "pre-order" but a car that was physically on the lot. After a few weeks of looking I had found that this configuration was a unicorn, and decided it was worth it to get exactly what I wanted than to fall back on a non-marked-up alternative like the Mazda 3, or to wait an indefinite amount of time (I was told at least to Jan/Feb 2022, and have heard of people waiting 3+ months and counting) to get one at less of a markup.
      If I hadn't found the perfect ST config maybe that'd have been different, but I felt like if I'd saved the $3K and went with my second choice, every day I saw a Civic ST on the road I'd be thinking "did I make the right choice? Did I?" while spending money is a one-time pain.
      Plus it turned out even better - I sold some stock in Oct 2021 to buy the Civic in cash, and the way the market has plunged in the six months since then, I'm glad I shifted that money into the car! (And, exactly the car I wanted!) And as far as I can see, a six-speed 2022 Civic ST hatchback hasn't become any less of a unicorn!

      Yeah, but the Integra basically is the Si hatch. You get the Si drivetrain with all the amenities of the Sport Touring hatchback, and with a hatchback/liftback body. Too bad it means you have to pay a good deal more to get it, but it also has adaptive dampers. Combine all that, and I'm mighty interested in the Integra. Ultimately, we'll need to wait for reviews and such, of course.

    That water issue is not something to gloss over. Honda’s are having all kinds of quality control issues. Both of my 2021 Hondas have numerous quality control issues. My dealer was upfront (and apologetic) about it and has said they have never seen so many of these issues across the product range than they have during the past 2 years. I’ve been a Honda guy through and through, but from what I’ve seen recently, I’m less inclined to get another Honda as a replacement. Maybe Acura (which would be a natural progression for me) is doing better with their build quality….

    Even as a 6-speed Mazda3 owner, I’ll admit Honda did a bang-up job with this gen Civic. Big thing that drew me to the Mazda was that I just don’t love the sound and power delivery of these small displacement 1.5/1.6T’s, especially with a manual, and I was willing to trade some space and handling ability for that. Also a little more aesthetically my preference, and I like the click-wheel infotainment. But these Civics are still great though. Would have probably been my second choice.

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've been waiting for a review on the Touring 6spd given that I liked it over the Si, despite that car's better performance. Not crazy about the Si's cheap interior and harsh ride quality for a Michigan daily driver. Sounds like it may be the perfect compromise. Thanks for the review. The only nick against these Civic hatchbacks with turbo is 1) like you said quite expensive and 2) color choice for these are so limited. Basically, you get black, grey and white and that's it. The lower spec sport hatch w/o turbo gets others like blue and red which I like. I don't get why the sportier version with the turbo gets the only boring color choices.
    These newer Civic Hatchbacks looks pretty good with the HPD hatch spoiler. I will buy one of these new Type R to compliment my 06 STI since Subaru killed off STI for new generation.
    I considered the upcoming GR Corolla hatch but the rear leg room is so small (29.9 inches, which is even less than my 06 STI!!!) and that won't work with two kids.

    The manual is the one to get. Problem is supply is low and if you find one the dealer wants thousands over MSRP. Hey Matt I saw a puddle of water next to the spare tire when you were showing it, that new car has a leak??

    This civic hatchback has more trunk space then a mazda cx30 suv and a corolla cross, on top of that the design seriously looks good the side profile is amazing but the back taillights are literally insane, i simply dont see why you would need an suv when a car like this exists in the market. I personally would get the 2.0L engine with 158hp i mean its kinda hard to go fast in stop n go traffic and i know the 2.0L engine is super reliable.

    Yikes water in the spare tire well? Honda quality?? Considering my 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback was a lemon 🍋 this isn't surprising. Honda has sunk in reliability to the point that they are in the basement with Volkswagen. Check JD Power reliability ratings and you will be shocked. Anyone considering a Honda...well you've been warned. The Honda dealer network, in Canada at least, is one of the worst. Stick with Toyota, Kia, Hyundai and Mazda.

    Matt- gotta disagree w/you. All CVTs are bad, all manuals- even spongy ones- are good, or at least better than any CVT. I like this car and would consider it. Wish it had more power but in today's gas crisis, it makes sense.

    • @richeyrich2203
      @richeyrich2203 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      While I agree on the premise that all manuals are good because buying them pretexts the manual, I disagree. Because not all manuals are a better driving experience for all people. More and more, as less manuals are available, those which are available are better because the manufacture is making them for enthusiast. But CVT’s are getting better and better, and those made by Toyota or some of the best. With proper regular maintenance they can last quite a long time. All of this is more about the driver than it is the machine when you’re talking about quality manufacturing.
