- Calcium channel blockers or calcium antagonists are a diverse group of drugs used to treat hypertension, angina, cardiac arrhythmias, cerebral vasospam, epilepsy and neuropathic pain. This video explains the mechanims of action of these drugs and relates them to their effects and their clinical uses. In particular it explains why verapamil selectively affects the heart, dihydopyridines like amlodipine and nifedipine selectively affect arteries, and why diltiazem combines the actions of the other two drugs. The gabapentanoid drugs, gabapentin and pregabalin, which are used to treat epilepsy and neuropathic pain, are also covered.
