Top Secret Drumming Techniques: Drum Solos using Syncopation

- My name is Phil Rosato. In this video I will be demonstrating the use of syncopation for practice and in the development of a drum solo, as influenced by Ted Reed's book: "Syncopation For The Modern Drummer".
Syncopation is defined as "a disturbance or interruption of the regular flow of rhythm": a "placement of rhythmic stresses or accents where they wouldn't normally occur". (Wikipedia)
I have learned these techniques from many great and influential drummers: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Steve Gadd, Jim Chapin and far too many other greats to mention.
I'm going to share what I have learned from these masters in hope of inspiring you to adopt and interpret these techniques to increase your drumming vocabulary as well as your articulation.

Thank you! I try to keep an open mind and enjoy what I am doing. Although discipline is a part of our life long learning process please remember to enjoy the evolution process one step at a time. We can only be who we are within our own capabilities, so try not to get frustrated and be patient with the progress stages. Have fun!
I have a question(and many other others) but this one in particular is concerning left hand accents. I use traditional grip and at higher bpms rely on my thumb to generate speed, this is something I learned watching greyson nekrutman years back. While it does work exceptionally well for low effort high speed singles it makes it very difficult to insert accents into. Due to the thumb being the only finger used. What would be your advice on this? It’s bothered me for ages.
Great question. I will shed some light by saying that there are many different techniques applied to traditional grip. Greyson is incredible with with his methods however, they may not work for you as they do not work for me. I experienced thumb fatigue with that approach.
My suggestion is to try using fingers, wrist and arms in a balanced state. Cradle the stick with the top of your left hand using your fore finger and middle finger in a loose fulcrum with your arm in a relaxed state. Less is more. Let the stick do the work via natural rebound and Moeller method technique. Years ago I was at a Jim Chapin clinic ( who studied under Sanford Moeller) which it had an immense impact on me that greatly improved my playing ability. Let your fulcrum breathe in order to stay relaxed.
I explain this in my video "motion versus effort" on four wall drummers. Watch Dick Cully's videos on Buddy Rich's techniques as he explains in detail the single stroke roll. WOW! I was blown away!

@@philrosatothe interesting thing about adopting greysons technique(for better or for worse) is that it does work for the most part. I get good control over my speed. Maybe I’d have to collect some footage of my own technique but if you look at greyson, the sticks are only supported by the fulcrum between the thumb and hand when he’s playing at full speed. This creates a lack of stability with accents but it’s been about 3 years of development on this technique I’d rather not abandon. I know dick cully but should revisit his videos. Funny that you mention jim chapin as well, I was just watching a youtube reupload of a vhs he did. Pretty incredible that you got to see the man in person haha. Thanks for the advice, as someone who’s never been formally taught it’s greatly appreciated. Hope to chat again soon.

I had the pleasure of seeing Buddy Rich live at least 30 times at different venues, I also got my picture with him while I received his autograph at the CNE bandshell. He cracked his 18 inch left crash cymbal at an Ontario Place performance. I was lucky enough to get that cymbal because a friend of mine worked at Long & McQuade which supplied Buddy his new cymbal of which I covered the cost. In essence I bought Buddy a cymbal!
The cracked cymbal with all of his finger prints is beautifully framed in my drum studio along with the press pass issued to me from L&M for that performance. My point is that Buddy was and still is a HUGE influence in my playing. During a performance at Seneca College two of us brought full sized binoculars and sat next to each other in order to see how Buddy held sticks and and used his fingers, arms and wrists in order to learn his technique.
When he was playing he glanced up at us with binoculars focused on him and he did a total double take and smirked. It was sooooo cool!
Learn what you can from as many drummers and musicians as possible.
