  • If you play the same fills all the time. Spend hours memorising grooves and songs but can't play with freedom then you are stuck in THE PATTERN TRAP.
Honestly, you are not alone. So many drummers (myself included) get stuck playing the same things over and over again. Well, I have helped 1000's of drummer break out of their own personal pattern trap and I can help you too.

I’m a beginner drummer who predominantly plays metal/rock and I’m trying to throw gospel into the mix. It really breaks it up for me and gives me extra strings to my bow 🤘🏻

@@DaveMajor certainly does. I’m 57 years old and I’m pretty sure it’s taking me longer to learn than it would’ve had I been younger.
Will I ever be as good as ii ffff sleep token? Nope, but I’m having a blast.

Nice vid. Although I do agree in how you're breaking this down, I do believe this is just elaborating on the same pattern and still in the "box". I always suggest to truly free yourself of the pattern, to learn to not just switch up accents and sound sources (cymbals/drums/etc) but to literally LEAVE THE PATTERN. I suggest that once you've internalized, to practice playing the pattern the first half of the fill and then go into something else to end it. And switch that up, start by playing whatever and then end using that pattern. So on and so forth. Throw in the middle of a fill only playing a pattern once etc.
I think this is where a lot of online teachers and teachers in general get it wrong because they're in a creating content mindset but in the expression mindset, you want to just have whatever pattern to bring out at random times, not just starting the fill and repeating the pattern x4 or however many times. Switching accent is great but it doesn't free you of the pattern is my point.
Lastly, I mean no offense. Great video you put out here. I'm only making suggestions.

I think you miss the point here.
The video demonstrates 3 tools you can apply to break from playing the same things the same way every time. With these 3 tools you have the opportunity to create and be free(er) but this isnt the end of the journey its a big step.
The end, imo, is to play in any subdivision and any time signature totally flowing freely and creating the stickings on the fly. I have other videos on that and a whole course all about improvisation and developing that ability.
This video forms a small part of the whole concept I teach to my students but putting the whole thing in a youtube video a) would be too long and b) would not reach as many people.
As a drum teacher who makes videos as well I have to balance making impactful and helpful videos that also will do as well as they can.

marching percussion (battery) would call this a gridding exercise and I strongly agree. This is how you move around with shape and depth. With out dynamics and thougtful accent placment its just a block pattern. This video is a gem for alot of mono drummers of all types
