- My name is Phil Rosato. In this video I will be demonstrating "motion vs effort". The less effort you develop in your technique, the greater your speed and fluidity of movement will be.
I have learned these techniques from many great and influential drummers: Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Steve Gadd, Jim Chapin and far too many other greats to mention.
I'm going to share what I have learned from these masters in hope of inspiring you to adopt and interpret these techniques to increase your drumming vocabulary as well as your articulation.
This cat belongs in the hall of fame for hands sticking and motion, thanks for sharing it to the drum world!! Toost🔥🔥🔥

Well taught, good info - thank you!
I found what you're talking about a while back..THANK YOU for explaining this so clearly Sir! I wish someone told me this when I first started out..Hats off to you! You got KILLIN hands too!!
Hey? Informative as all get out. First time I think I have seen someone accurately breakdown one of Buddy's incredible closing moments in a drum solo. The one just before he goes into the 'machine gun roll' with snare and cymbal? I believe BR called it the 'whip cream roll'? You could see BR tense his upper body and engage his fast twitch muscles. Thank you for the lesson sir.
And that's what separates a drummer from a drum player! Thank you! 😎👍
Thank you sir. This really clicked for me.
Great stuff Phil thanks for sharing these techniques!
Most Excellent and Smoking Control I also use in and out Motion to make things easier You and Yoni Madar have this down
Thanks Tim. I enjoy watching your tutorial videos, well done!
You’re just a Genius!
Inspiring 🎉
Looks good! Does this work on a medium / low tuned snare drum with a regular ambassador?
Paul, I'm presuming you're asking about the chop-outs. If you can play them on a mesh head, I'm sure a low tuned ambassador would work fine.
Brilliant! ❤
Please post PDF of lesson
Hi Glenn. We have and will continue to embed key stickings into the videos. We prefer doing it this way rather than having to set up access to documents on a web site. Paul
You make that look way too easy! That being said what a great teacher you are! I'm happy I subscribed to your channel. I'm just about 41 and have been drumming for most my life, and I now am finally interested in technique and just overall being a good ass drummer! I love the drums and even if I don't play live anymore I still want to become a great drummer 😊
Excellent technique and dynamics. The last thing I'd want to see or hear in those patterns is "evenness."
