The Sparrows DD pick or "The Pick that Bosnian Bill and I made" really only works with locks that can be opened with front tension (meaning you tension from first disk from the keyway opening). Many Abloy locks require tension from the last disk so they need pick that's able to turn the last disk while manipulating one or more disks closer the keyway opening in front. There has been some reports about people successfully opening modern Abloy disk detainer locks with front tension but except for the Protec 2 (where the tension can be applied to interactive keycontrol element instead of disks) I have't seen this on video.
One thing I can speak to is as a whole the community is extremely welcoming and always wants to help people learn and succeed. I have not seen it in any other community. Thank you for the kind words and I hope the video was helpful :)
Fantastic explanation. On this journey myself. I have successfully picked a few disk detainer locks although still working on mastering them. Granted they are only cheap locks but I personally think they are good to practice on and not that expensive of you break it. Looking forward to more videos so I can pick your brains.

well done on the presentation and explanation! Seen many others but yours clicked I like the false gate example.. your visual picture added cleared up thoughts of how it looked
Thank you for the kind words and I am glad it helped. These locks are so different and just having the visual can make a big difference. Personally, I am still lacking on my skills to pick them and want to learn more
Thank you. I did not really understand how the disc detainer locks work. I can see why the tools that actually work on them are expensive and complex, relative to hooks and rakes..
It is unfortunate that the widely available ones need heavy modifying to work. Technically one some of these front tensioning ones you could pick it with a standard pin and tumbler setup but it seems very hard
No need for any springs. The sidebar rests on top of the disks. It's only when the true gates align that the sidebar is able to drop down far enough for the lock to turn.
What keeps the disks properly aligned for inserting the key? I mean couldn't they be rotated in a way so the the key won't insert or won't turn the disks the correct distance?
If the disks gets turned for some reason (picking or other) you just have to insert the key little by little while you turn the key back and forth. Eventually the key will slide into disk by disk until it reaches the bottom.
Turning the discs isn't necessary to pick the lock. It's just the thing some people do. You will need to turn them in the opposite direction of where you turned them. However, if you place them into a false gate you will need to turn them either direction to get into the correct gate
Cool cutaway and an awesome tutorial on how DD locks work internally👌 I am currently waiting on a cheap Chinese DD pick and hopefully I can modify it enough to fit my Abloy 321, if not I have a couple of cheap DD padlocks to practice on👍 Enjoy the rest of your week my friend👍😀✌️
Did you buy the set that has one for front tension and one for rear tension? Albert Lebel has a few videos on his front tension one and Daz Evers recently made a video on his rear tension one. It is cool seeing how you can get the most out of these tools with a little bit of work
You know that some of those discs are made so that the Chinese picks don't work, right? :) In any case, to give you more information in general, you might start reading some of Han Fey's work. He has published a few papers on Abloy that you can find online. Here is a link to one of them: toool.nl/images/5/58/Abloy.pdf
HelpfulLockPicker yeah I got one of each in a set, one is silver with with tension handles and the other has a blue cylinder style. I have seen both the videos you are referring to and saved them as reference for when mine arrive, I just hope I get the mods right the first time round, having said that they are cheap enough to buy extras if needed. Appreciate you getting back to me and thanks for the information on how to modify DD picks👍✅ Hope you are progressing well with Huxley's creations they look awesome. Enjoy the rest of your week my friend👍😀✌️

Have a good one my friend👍😀✌️
Do you have a video showing how to identify what type of lock simply by looking at them? Surely this has to be the first thing to do before starting to pick Many thanks

Someone should make one with stainless discs. Looks like those are brass and would be easy to drill depending on the faceplate and what, if anything, is in it.
Brilliant video!!! The information is wonderful presented! Your use of the inset video is awesome!! Truly great work!!! Thank you for sharing this!! 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏🐈
There's one from Sparrows you can pick up for 1 million dollars. The original design was from Bosnian Bill and LPL. They say it'll be back in stock in Nov. Can't wait lol

@@HelloKittyFanMan.. It's probably the same reason why we haven't switch to electric cars. Every locksmith would have to change their training, equipment, excetera. every aspect that involves lock would have to change
1, @@HelpfulLockPicker, we actually _have_ switched to electric cars... some of us, that is. 2. Where do we find the springs of the sidebar, What is their position? Do they push up or push down the sidebar?
I am not sure but they push the sidebar out
No need for any springs.

I believe they can only turn so much
If the disks gets turned for some reason (picking or other) you just have to insert the key little by little while you turn the key back and forth.
Eventually the key will slide into disk by disk until it reaches the bottom.
To pick we turn all the disks clockwise. Should we then pick anticlockwise ?
Turning the discs isn't necessary to pick the lock. It's just the thing some people do. You will need to turn them in the opposite direction of where you turned them. However, if you place them into a false gate you will need to turn them either direction to get into the correct gate
@@HelpfulLockPicker So picking and tensioning in the opposite direction ?
Thanks. The question I have is why don't they make the false gates a little deeper to make it more difficult to pick?
I am not sure of the correct answer but I would guess they would not want the discs to be weakened too much to prevent a shearing attack
If they made the false gates deeper, they would all of a sudden become true gates, and the lock would then be significantly easier to open. :O)
