Great review thanks. I've been "scared off" from trying these locks as I don't have the right tool and wasn't sure if it was for me, but this has shown me the workings of the locks and I might now treat myself to the picking/tensioning tool... thanks :)
If only you showed this video last week.. now I know I got everything wrong, why it didn't open and why I should buy another one..!! Thanks Lock Noob..👍👍
Wonderful video - you made if very clear how it works. Great modification on the tool to fit into the lock with the warding. I still have trouble navigating through the disks - also I often get stuck; maybe my tip needs a bit sanding. What changes exactly did you do to your disc detainer picking tool?
I filed/ground down the tip to about 1.5mm and gave it a good sanding and that’s it other than using a 1mm cutting disc to cut a slot in the tension tip to work around the warding in some of the disc detainers. It’s hard to use them out of the packet without these mods :-)
Another great video. I have the same cheap Chinese dd pick and it doesn’t work all that well, I will give it a go to sand it down as you have. Thanks for doing this.
Hey Lock noob, great video. I wish I had seen this before I put the key in the practice lock and pulled the key out. It completely fell apart. I've tried several times to put it back together but no luck. I haven't given up. Still trying to get it back together. Awesome video. Thanks
I am going to get one of the plastic ones because i know if i try on a lock i'll probably break the tool so it's a no brainer thanks for the video i watch a lot of these video's and am trying to get a good range of tool's and to increase my knowledge of all types of lock it has been an interest of mine since i was a boy and i find it rewarding to open them and then try again to open them in a shorter space of time the more complicated the better i am also trying safe lock's so i am going to get myself tools to overcome Dial combination & digital lock's i have a few thought's in my head about that and if i succeed which i am 98% going to i will let you know because " A little Knowledge is a dangerous thing " LOL great video's till your next Cheer's G.
You know you can use the "cheap" chinese backtension tool to open the Tibbe-lock. Just slim the pick-tip, thinner and shorter and shape the tension-end like the key. And you just go disc to disc, when you can turn it you do it. Have to turn 4 or 5 discs and its still as "usable" on the regular DD locks
@@LockNoob I saw a tool called the Tibbe-wand and looking at it. I thought it should be easy to convert the Backtension-tool. First time I tried it took me a minute to open the lock and it is at lot easier to extract from the lock, than the Tibbe-tool. (that can be a nightmare sometimes)
Great video. I've only been picking locks for a couple of months now and have heavily relied on videos like yours and others to pick my way up the lock food chain. I picked a 90mm Shenling disc detainer lock several times and now..... nothing. The lock works fine. The method for picking them is the same as I am using. Any suggestions? I do have another Chinese lock on the way. So, at least I can compare the 2.
It's a funny thing. I didn't reset the discs, didn't pay much attention to it while watching t.v., and picked it. Now if I only had it on video! Oh, well... next time.
This video of you is really informative. It's hard to imagine what is inside that set of disk. I bought the pick from eBay and that was broken now. You know... Chinese made... LOL! Thank you, Sir!
I found this emencly useful, Thank you ;-) Did you do the video on modifying the disc detainer tool? I ask because I have just purchased one just like yours and it does need some modifying.
It’s very tricky to get the feel to begin with. Make sure you are able to at least turn 1 disc at a time maximum and experiment with levels of tensions. Never put too much tension on these locks though, they don’t need it :-)
Sometimes, it’s very hard to tell. Knowledge of locks helps as some locks famously tension at the bottom and some at the top... most cheap Chinese disc detainers tension at the top though. :-)
Excellent video and we'll timed, I think I've been destroying a cheap Chinese disk detainer trying to open it with no luck whatsoever. Now I might try some finesse!
I just got the see-through detainer padlock from uklockpickers... blimey! yes... like no tension at all! now I have a much better idea of what i'm doing.
It’s very hard to show, even with the cutaways. The best thing is to buy a very cheap one and take it apart and see how it works. All you are doing is rotating each binding disc either clockwise or anti-clockwise until you feel the sideboard fall into a gate :-)
Thanks for the reply. I think I'm missing which direction and why? I find it unclear from the description? A cheap one, or the 'glass' one you're using please? I can understand the principle, I'm missing the next bit. I'll try a 'demonstrator'
@@LockNoob Thanks, I've seen a few, but just the really cheap ones. Just didn't know if maybe there were better ones. Don't really need much for practice though.
I also just want to say that I just picked my first DD padlock after watching this video! i.imgur.com/Mw31vgv.jpg Thanks for the info! This got me past a few small details I was missing last time I tried my hand at one of these... Cheers!
So I’ve not really touched on disc detainer locks in all this time, so now’s as good as any :-) Enjoy!
Thanks for this one. I've had one of these locks not in the naughty bucket but in the "how the hell do I" bucket. Learning more every day. Cheers
Every day is a school day on locksport :-)
Good video as always but on the ones with the plug keeping all of the core in you can pry them out so everything just falls out.
Yeah, they don’t offer any real protection sadly :-)
Great info and tutorial again mate. I have never used working tools to pop one... Solomon made me a pick and wire ages ago and single disc picked it.
They are fun tools to play with :-)
Great review thanks. I've been "scared off" from trying these locks as I don't have the right tool and wasn't sure if it was for me, but this has shown me the workings of the locks and I might now treat myself to the picking/tensioning tool... thanks :)
It’s worth trying and can be a lot of fun :-)
great info. i have not graduated to picking a disk lock yet but all good stuff to keep in mind for when i get there.thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching :-)
If only you showed this video last week.. now I know I got everything wrong, why it didn't open and why I should buy another one..!! Thanks Lock Noob..👍👍
Glad to help. What went wrong for you :-)
Lock Noob I took advise from someone calling himself Bosnian something and he suggested heavy tension... it all went wrong from there lol..
Thank you for this video, this has been my kryptonite for a while. The stone not the brand;)
Well, mineral :-)
Great video & good timing for me as I am just starting to research how to pick these types of locks...
Go for it :-)
Thanks for this video!
I’ve seen this type of tool used in videos but didn’t know the full story on this type of lock 👍🏻
Thanks :-)

Perfect explanation of how they work and how to pick them.great vid as usual noobster.ty
Thank you :-)

Thank you for this. Now about to buy the acrylic lock to both practice on and to adjust my tools.
Just make sure you move on from the acrylic lock onto real ones ASAP :-)
Very good introduction to disc detainer lock. What is the advantage of disc detainer locks? Picking resistance is not the reason, I guess. Thanks.
actually, pick resistance is very good and there are no springs so they last well
Hey Lock noob, great video. I wish I had seen this before I put the key in the practice lock and pulled the key out. It completely fell apart. I've tried several times to put it back together but no luck. I haven't given up. Still trying to get it back together. Awesome video. Thanks
Yeah, once it falls apart, I doubt you’d get it back together practically. Happy Picking :-)
No Baton locks? They make one which is somewhat similar to the Abloy Profile.
What would be a good easy beginner disc detainer lock to start with available in the UK.
I am going to get one of the plastic ones because i know if i try on a lock i'll probably break the tool so it's a no brainer thanks for the video i watch a lot of these video's and am trying to get a good range of tool's and to increase my knowledge of all types of lock it has been an interest of mine since i was a boy and i find it rewarding to open them and then try again to open them in a shorter space of time the more complicated the better i am also trying safe lock's so i am going to get myself tools to overcome Dial combination & digital lock's i have a few thought's in my head about that and if i succeed which i am 98% going to i will let you know because " A little Knowledge is a dangerous thing " LOL great video's till your next Cheer's G.

the tension end must be filed down a bit on each side and corners

That does sound strange, but locks can be loke that. If the key works still, it should be pickable.
It's a funny thing. I didn't reset the discs, didn't pay much attention to it while watching t.v., and picked it. Now if I only had it on video! Oh, well... next time.
Great video! These locks still defeat me. I think my too isn't proper width and I am getting more than one disc at a time.
File down the pick tip on your tool to make it thinner :-)
@@LockNoob I will try that.
How do you determine which disc is the O cut to tension off disc one is not.
Thanks
trial and error. most will rear tension or top tension. very few center tension
This video of you is really informative.
It's hard to imagine what is inside that set of disk.
I bought the pick from eBay and that was broken now. You know... Chinese made... LOL!
Thank you, Sir!
No problem :-)
A good explanation and the cutaway picking was helpful too.👍🏽I should pick one up, can't imagine that they'd cost too much.🍺✌
Nah, all very cheap really :-)
This video is really fantastic for beginning!
Thank you :-)
The cut away is better than the proper chinese disc detainer
I agree :-)
I found this emencly useful, Thank you ;-)
Did you do the video on modifying the disc detainer tool? I ask because I have just purchased one just like yours and it does need some modifying.
I think BosnianBill did a great video on modding these picks :-)
+Lock Noob Cheers I will check him out ;-)
I allways wondered how they worked u made it super clear brilliant clip noob
Thank you :-)
I've got this exact training lock, I understand the principle of what I'm aiming for but I don't feel anything when turning the disks.
It’s very tricky to get the feel to begin with. Make sure you are able to at least turn 1 disc at a time maximum and experiment with levels of tensions. Never put too much tension on these locks though, they don’t need it :-)
Appreciate the advice. I'll give it another try.
Ok, tried it again today and, boom, open every time. I was over thinking the solution. Need to try more now as it almost feels too easy.
How do you tell if the lock tensions at the top or bottom of the lock
Sometimes, it’s very hard to tell. Knowledge of locks helps as some locks famously tension at the bottom and some at the top... most cheap Chinese disc detainers tension at the top though. :-)
Great Video Lock Noob as always.
Thanks you :-)
Thank you appreciate that a lot I never really understood them. I haven't gotten a kit yet but tm I'll get my first lockpick kit
Excellent video, I learned a lot! Thanks LN!
Thanks :-)
Very interesting... A well thought out and instructional video.
Thank you :-)
Nice overview, thanks!
Thanks :-)
Excellent video and we'll timed, I think I've been destroying a cheap Chinese disk detainer trying to open it with no luck whatsoever. Now I might try some finesse!
Yes, a little care goes a long way. I destroyed 2 cheap detainers by using too much force and pushing the disc stops into the plastic housing :-)
I just got the see-through detainer padlock from uklockpickers... blimey! yes... like no tension at all! now I have a much better idea of what i'm doing.
thanks nice pick light tension good
Thanks :-)
That is an abloy high profile.
Thanks
IMHO the picking could have been clearer? I couldn't understand what you were doing with each disk(c)?
It’s very hard to show, even with the cutaways. The best thing is to buy a very cheap one and take it apart and see how it works. All you are doing is rotating each binding disc either clockwise or anti-clockwise until you feel the sideboard fall into a gate :-)

The clear plastic one is a good place to start :-)
Hey @Lock Noob, where's a good place to get a decent acrylic disc detainer lock?
Amazon, eBay or any Chinese importer 👍
@@LockNoob Thanks, I've seen a few, but just the really cheap ones. Just didn't know if maybe there were better ones. Don't really need much for practice though.
Nicely done ;) Bravo!
Thanks :-)
Very cool my friend well explained there are fun to pick😊👍😊👍😎😎👍
Yeah, I just don’t pick em enough really :-)
Finally picked my first disk detainer lock. Ta much.
Thanks :-) great work :-)
Thanks Lock Noob
Thanks :-)
Nice video buddy👍👍😘😎

Will do, thanks :-)

Personally I liked "sticky uppie things"... Ha! Nice vid dude!
