Dario Sammartino has been engaged in a grueling heads up battle against Hossein Ensan for hours. Putting his tournament life on the line, he makes a sharp play with pocket kings in a bid for the world championship, but will it be enough?

      Yes the stacks weren't even so the title spoiled it for us all thinking part of Doug's followers (which is maybe 10% ?). By the way, this old way of finishing the main event right now in July is much better than the "November Nine" it was in fact one of the biggest mistakes in WSOP ever. Maybe it helped to get some more hype to event and watchers but anyways, good decision to go back to normal tournament style where you don't go for a pause for months.

      Ensan did everything right, the other guy played the hand like a total retard. I think the reverse implied odds make the turn (facing the third consecutive bet that says monster) a clear fold. I think Ensan's snap call tells you that this was a really bad play.

    It's a bad shove for three reasons:
    1. Ensan has shown he calls if he has a hand.
    2. While Ensan's play COULD be a bluff, his bluffing pattern, which Samartino saw by now during the break, has shown to not involve such big bets as on the turn, but smaller ones.
    3. Ensan can afford to call and be in the game, while Samartino cannot afford to lose. It is not a situation where if Ensan calls and loses, he is in a really bad spot. He still has a playable stack so if he is ahead, he should and will call. Given 1&2, it's clear he thinks so and will call, which is NOT the result Samartino wants, and eliminates the fold equity you use as part of the reason why it's a good move.
    Fold, find better spots.
    However, Samartino was tired mentally of being outplayed by Ensan. He played soft and mostly won small pots but lost big hands and so needed a resolution. You can see in his body language that he is nervous pre-shove, and his decision is a "get a resolution either way" (as in "now I might have a big stack and finally can play him, or I lose and be done".)

    • @NeuroticNOOB

      First of all, Dario should be embarrassed on that hand you are referencing (not the hand in this video) where the shove was miscounted. WHY?
      1. He is a tournament player and this is a rule from ALL tournaments (and cash games for that matter) that it is the PLAYER'S duty, NOT the dealer, to KNOW how many chips you are calling.
      2. I'm sure he DID know the rule, but:
      3. He did NOT complain until AFTER the flop came and he missed his 10.
      4. Then he whines, full well knowing the rule, but AFTER waiting to see if he hits his set.
      I have no respect for that, and LESS respect if he did NOT know the rule. If you want to be 'world class' at a game, the least you can do is know the rules of what you are playing.
      Now, on to Jack. As I said, this is a WELL KNOWN rule by any poker player of any quality. So Jack's actual DECISION *WAS* easy.
      Jack went ON to say "It could have been 30 million, and if the dealer says 3 million and you call, it is STILL a call" which AGAIN is correct. So, now we have some CONTEXT for his unfortunately misunderstood comment of 'You call 17, you call 22' which *I* feel he meant the same thing as, you call 3 you call 30.
      I don't believe for a second that he was saying "Any player that would call 17 M would call 22M in &&ANY&& situation " which is the way the situation has been twisted. He *IS* saying, "You said 'call' and no matter WHAT the actual amount of chips is, or what the dealer announced, you have called it."
      Give the guy credit to know the difference.

Yeah for TV purposes it looks cool, but when a standard 3bet requires multiple stacks of chips, there's too many small chips in play. Plus, those new 5mil chips are just so damn pretty to look at.

      If hes prepared to snap KK here then we can just wait to make a strong hand before jamming and take lower variance lines as bluffs etc. Such as high frequency delayed c betting vs 2 checks from OOP and small x raises vs his smaller c bets (which seem to be weaker hands.)

      @@Demondoink1 Exactly. Ensan has a super tight range here, and is not capable of folding a big hand, which he always has here. Dario basically tried to get a fish to fold a monster, which just doesn't work. Ensan may fold better flush draws in this spot, but that is not enough hands to make this bluff profitable. I would argue a fold preflop as you are going to have a tough time realizing equity against a super tight range (Ensan was only taking this opening size with big hands as we have seen throughout the match, no doubt Dario was informed of this by his rail). Ensan's play had been very exploitable thus far, as we have seen Dario bluff raise the small turn size more than once and get it through. Imho, fold pre and keep exploiting post flop. "Getting a good price to defend" is not a good reason. MDF does not apply here, since Ensan is playing so far from optimal. Super glad he won!

    Calling this a good bluff vs this specific villian is nothing short of laughable. I've seen this dude snap off river x/r with 3rd pair. Ensan finds a hero fold maybe 2% of the time you hit the river. So just call the turn, and ship river only if you improve. The only way you can successfully semibluf Ensan is if you have a dominating draw that you semi bluff and he bluff calls. Literally, that's the only way.

    Given the dynamics of the heads up match I think it’s a check fold or a check call. The play was very straightforward pretty much all night. Many hands were going to showdown and the best hand was winning an overwhelming majority of times. I understand Doug is looking at these hands in theory but I just think the check shove gets a fold maybe 1 or 2 times out of 10 if you take table dynamics into play. Think the right play was to call and fold the river imho.

      Why 23% ? 4 Aces and 52 cards ...

    • @mrmacross
      @mrmacross 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mart_en I'm going to oversimplify things (and technically, so do in-game winning probabilities).
      First, since a player is already holding two cards, he has 50 (not 52) remaining cards to consider.
      Second, 4/50 (or 4/52) are the odds when you have only one card to draw. However, the flop is three, so the probability of an ace showing up on the flop is going to be considerably higher than 4/50.
      So, the easiest way to figure it out is to figure out the odds that an ace does NOT show, and then subtract that one from. The (simplified) odds for an ace NOT to show is multiplying 46/50 * 45/49 * 44/48 = .7745; you can view this as the odds of dodging an ace on three consecutive one-card draws. Subtract that from 1, and you get .2255 or roughly 23%.
      Keep in mind the 23% includes having one, two, or three aces on the flop. Also, that 23% applies to any pocket pair you're holding other than one that contains an ace.

    Maybe I'm just a fish, but wouldn't being in Ensan's spot actually be a really tough spot? I mean, can you really expect your opponent to bluff check-shove the turn heads up for the WSOP main event title? And, oddly enough, he does have a number of hands in his range better than KK. I'd probably still have ended up calling, but would it not be a pretty tough decision?

    • @Nick-xu7ns
      @Nick-xu7ns 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably gets pretty tough if your opponent is Gordon Vayo. But Dario is a high stakes tournament reg who definitely is pretty balanced in this spot. He probably decides that when he bets 33M there he is never folding this high in his range and therefore doesn’t waste time tanking on the call.

    • @GuthixGriffin
      @GuthixGriffin 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Given the potsize it's an easy call. Ensan probably thought about the board texture when he asked for a chip count. Then he proceeded to bet 33M with the intention to call of any shove.

      @@Joel-js2gk If you assume that 8s4s is the worst Sammartino is shoving, then Ensan got 36% equity. His EV breaks even with 33% equity. Here's the range for Equilab:
      T9s,96s,KsJs,QdJd,QsJs,As9s,Ks9s,Qs9s,Js9s,As8s,Ks8s,Qs8s,Js8s,As7s,Ks7s,Qs7s,Js7s,8d7d,8h7h,8c7c,As6s,As5s,9s5s,8s5s,7s5s,As4s,8s4s,7s4s,As3s,As2s,Ks2s,T9o,96o,87o
      If you add some worse hands that Sammartino is shoving as well, the call gets highly equitable:
      98s (no spades), 98, 97s (no spades), 97o
      In my opinion the decision to snap call a shove was made when Ensan asked for a chip count. Sammartino would never check a set on the river with a conntected board with a flush draw. And he would most probably not check T9 and 87 either. You allow KJ, QJ, KQ, flushdraws way too much equity with a check back. Assuming you have sixes, it goes check check and K,Q,J , 8 or a spade hit the board. You still need to bet your sixes. Would you ever fold to a raise? You can't in this situation. Let alone if you have 87.
