Iâll sum up Rochester for you. It was a beautiful, clean, booming city 40 years ago. Now it is a dump. Kodak closing killed Rochester. Many once thriving businesses shut their doors. The crime rate is off the charts, second only to Detroit. The drug problem is out of control. If you go to Charlotte, youâd better bring a gun for your own protection. Forget Charlotte Beach entirely. Gangs rule the once âConey Island of the Northâ as it was called. If youâre still not convinced, buy on the âEast sideâ (of the Genesee River). Stay far away from the west side. Especially Charlotte and Greece, [It is] a ghetto. Plan on buying a house that has a MINIMUM of ten other offers above and beyond asking price, then enjoy being âunder waterâ in your mortgage bc you will NEVER get what you paid for it when you decide to move out of Rochester, and you WILL. I was born and raised in Rochester in the once beautiful Town of Charlotte. Lived there for 45 years till my husbandâs job was goneâĶcompany closed there doors with two days notice to employees. And if thatâs not enough, plan on paying taxes out the A$$. The only other state that has higher taxes than NY is California. ThereâĶI saved your future. Youâre welcome.
I was thinking someday to move up to the Lake Ontario shoreline... that's a bummer. I looked up the job stats a while ago. UR/Strong is now the biggest employer but that in no way replaces the jobs lost from Kodak which peaked at 60,400 Rochester jobs in 1982. This is followed by RGH and Wegmans. The remaining businesses employ less than 5,000 people. And they're building (too many) track houses here in Ontario County. So it looks like an OK area for wealthy folks and professional / medical jobs and not good for manufacturing.
I graduated from RIT in 1999. I lived there for 3 years right down the street from the Eastman house and loved it. I'm not sure I'd want to go back.

If you talk S about Roch its cause you lived in a S area also when people say Roch they mean Monroe county. The city is rough but their are some great neighborhoods. Westwide, personally if the location works Chili is still pretty good East in this order the my personal best Mendon, Fairport, Pittsford, Brighton. Tons of exurban rural still if thats your thing.
Victor too! Nice areas in northern Ontario County. I haven't seen any "gangs" at Eastview Mall.
It seems odd that a place so far upstate is getting such competitive offers on houses.
Rochester is a Blue city, complete with all the Blue state amenities: gangs, crime, homelessness, etc. Don't run out of gas if you're driving through the city. Just check area news channels, shootings everyday is now the norm. Your kids will not grow up normal if they get raised in Rochester. They will however develop many survival skills which may come in handy during WW III.

Honestly I believe Rochester has more upward potential. As far as crime - I think theyâre very similar, but Neighborhoodscout.com would be a better resource to tell you that!

Watch any of my videos, I also talk shit about Rochester. Youâre wrong.
