I've never heard anyone say Keaton was a bad Batman, he is typically mentioned as being great. He was believable as both the bat and Wayne.

Jack Nicholson as the Joker was one of the best casting choices in cinema. Happy to see you've started the Batman films.

I agree. Alot of people don't like it because of how over the top and strange he is. But that is the essence of the Joker. I think people forget that the Joker has been written many different ways. He isn't always brooding and depressed. He can also use big silly guns that say POW and tell jokes. Which Jack Nicholson nailed!

    • @Film_Bro

100% agree! One of my favourite moments is when he puts on the glasses during the final fight and says "You wouldn't hit a man with glasses would ya?" That for me perfectly summarised his character! Mark Hamill is also fantastic!

Never heard that some people thought this was the worst Batman and never heard that people thought Christopher Nolan's Gotham City was the superior version to Tim Burton's. (I mean Nolan's Gotham is just a city with NO character). We must run in very different circles Mr. RedEye

    Interesting tidbits:
-This was a Joker movie first. Hence the focus.
-This Joker is the crime boss, Golden Age, version. No other version portrays him that way. Adam West Batman (Cesar Romano [spelling?]) was the practical joke centered and non-threatening censored Silver Age version.
    - This version cannot ever be considered the worst. Just as a technical point, as it is the basis to which all others must compare for a cinematic source. You notice the lack of martial arts, the single villian, and a very limited scope. All the other 90s and more have more villians and are trying to cover more ground. This stayed on 1 point.
-Having the old VHS, if you don't remember the cola commercial tie-in, that was a HUGE part of how VHS and home movies' costs were brought down. This is another monumental inclusion for its importance to home video ownership as well

What I love about this movie is that, before being a Batman movie, it's definitely a Tim Burton movie. You can totally tell who directed it, and gave it those Gothic and dark tones. It was my first Batman flick and it keeps a tender spot in my heart. I like how Bruce Wayne is so awkward yet changes drastically when he goes in being the Batman. Introverts know how hard is to feel at ease unless you've got the occasion of a role to play or a job to do. And that's EXACTLY what Michael Keaton is doing here. He feels very out of place at being himself, until he wears the cape and knows exactly what to do. And Jack Nicholson feels more like a caricature, being Joker, while Heath Ledger was more of a true blue psychopath. The first was more out of a comic, the second more of a realistic movie. Masterpiece.

Thanks. Batman '89 is certainly iconic. It represented the next step in serious superhero movies, after Superman & Superman II. And it has the distinction that more ideas, attitudes, & imagery have been lifted from this one film and used in others ever since. Tim Burton made a truly dark Batman that was 180° from the 1966 version. The costume & set designs, the music, the character portrayals, the vehicles - all set a precedent. There was nothing else like it. tavi.

I just saw heath ledger as the Wannabe jack Nicholson but aimed toward emo/ wannabe metal head teens. he didn't really make sense as much as he was just wannabe crazy.
not that he's bad. just that when people say he's the best that ever jokered I don't see it. then we got this latest movie where it was joker becoming joker and that was for all the incels lol.
And with that, I I see the problem with Jared Leto joker in a way. we give him shit for the tats, but his mannerisms was jack Nicholson to me. I think everyone just mad he didn't play a huge role in a movie they thought would give him a huge role. he played crazy background and to me, that made sense. he was just the background to Harley, and because he's so iconic, he's a very standout piece to anyone theirbackgrounds, but he did belong in the background being joker.

"if you don't know by now ... he's Batman". Geesh, spoilers.
When I was 12, this was my favorite movie.
I agree Gotham is amazing. In the 2000s and 2010s these giant cities have become common, but back in the 1980s they were not. Blade Runner had done something similar in 1982 without the comic edge, but largely this was not tried.
I don't think it's odd to say the city is better than Nolan's because at points he has a lack of interest in making a new Gotham. In The Dark Knight, it's almost literally Chicago and in The Dark Knight Rises it's almost literally New York and not the same city as the previous movie. Part of this is about how Nolan's work has been evolving. His eye has evolved a long way since Batman and he had a bit of an attitude change.
Anton Furst won an academy award for the production design. Unfortunately his story takes a sad turn. He signed a contract with Jon Peters which would allow him to direct starting with a Michael Jackson picture, but that didn't materialize and he was kept from working on Batman Returns by the deal. In the midst of a divorce and facing depression, he ended his life in 1991. Just another reason to hate Jon Peters other than the giant spider.
I also think the production design gets worse with each of the next 3 films. I don't think that's at all controversial for Schumacher films.
I'm not sure why people think there's anything wrong with Keaton. I get he seemed like a weird choice at the time coming off Beetlejuice especially. If he had to fight outside the costume it might be more of an issue. He's far more reserved than most of his 1980's performances.
There's an argument that he doesn't fit the Batman character because he does seem like a human outside the costume. But I don't think that's much different with Kilmer and Clooney, but they are also too flawless as you suggest. Bale's Batman is closest to the post-Silver age character. Ben Affleck is probably too light. He seems to have never been given the right superhero.
I suspect the biggest problem with Keaton that he's not the star of the first film. The film could be called Joker. This interpretation of Joker from Nicholson as chaos has influenced the comics and is at the root of what Ledger did in a different way. And because Keaton isn't the star of this film it leaves him in an odd place for the next film.
My big issue more than anything is the end. The Joker, he's won. The all is lost moment. Batman is dangling there. But then Batman pulls out a wire and catches Joker. Joker has had an unrealistic answer to everything, but now he can't get rid of this wire and he falls to is animated death. To me it always had this feeling like the actor telling us it's time to off the character instead of actually being beat. It's a death he could have avoided. For that reason, I've always liked that the Joker was left dangling in The Dark Knight. It's too bad that Nolan couldn't follow-up on Joker.

That didn't stop me from watching it 50 times but now that I'm older and there's a million Batman's to what it's not my go-to. But on the other hand Batman Returns is my absolute favorite Batman movie by far. I don't think batman-returns is slow and boring at all I thought Catwoman was the sexiest thing I've ever seen and Danny DeVito's born to play somebody like the penguin. I also like the Batman with Robert Pattinson. This is my unpopular opinion, but I really do not like the Christopher Nolan Batman movies😮

Whenever people talk about the interpretation of comic book characters, I'm fascinated to see how they play out. So, Redeye, your analysis of Keaton's Batman is fascinating because you emphasize the humanity of the character. In the end, he's a guy with a lot of money, a bunch of gadgets, and too much free time. But the prevalent "thinking" about Batman is that he's not human. He is good at everything, the best, and not just "the best" the way a person might be the best at something, but so good at everything he does he can hang with Superman and Wonder Woman as an equal if not their superior. But my favorite Batman stories are very much the ones that emphasize his "humanness," like the Year One storyline, or the Long Halloween, where the enemies are crazy gangsters and Batman is more rooted in "the real world."
On the other hand, Affleck's Batman gets guff for using guns because... Batman lore is only real if is drawn from the Comics Code era? Why is that? For many years, Batman had a gun and killed people. There are many people today who love Batman who very much think he should ditch the "code against killing" and adopt firearms use (often mentioning that it *is* part of the character's lore.) But then Synder is, like, "We can draw inspiration from the pre-Code Batman, as well as the Midnighter, to create a cinematic Batman that is both true to the lore of the character but novel." Nope. No good. That's WRONG and BAD.
On the other hand, the same fans can be incredibly forgiving. When the Iron Man movie came out - the first one - the Iron Man character was... essentially Doctor Doom. He was running an extradimensional, soul-sucking prison and had a team of, basically, assassins working for him (led by the Green Goblin.) But ignoring the recent lore of Iron Man was just fine in that case.
I find it all very confusing. There seem to be no rules as to what the fans will or won't tolerate for a given character relative to their comics lore, or what lore "counts," or what have you.

For me this is batman the greatest batman movie ever made in my opinion jack Nicholson is by far the best joker. would you agree if they just used Michael Keaton the franchise would of gone far val Kilmer bad batman Tommy Lee Jones was trying hard to be jack Nicholson as 2face Joel was basically trying so hard to match batman 1989 🤣 you agree.

Who in the hell ever said that Keaton's batman is the worst, and who thinks that this Gotham being amazing is an unpopular opinion? I've literally never heard either of those things in my life lol love your reviews, but I don't know where you got that information from. lol I don't think Keaton's Batman requires any defense. I think it was perfect for what it was.

  • @Johny40Se7en

Lovely perspective of such a dark and iconic gem. You know when you were talking about how the creation of the stylised Gotham was done so well back then, I was just thinking, cgi has it's place, sure, but nowadays it is SO saturated in everything. It sucks giant fuckin' hairy arse. And it made me realise that those incredible matt paintings, like that one there about 4:27, they need to bring those back. John Carpenter's The Thing, RoboCop and Blade Runner are just a few others which are amazing for that. Albert Whitlock did them and they look bloody real. There's so much thought and careful attention to where the lighting would be and it's just magic 🥰😊
And one other thing, butt. You mentioned how your favourite Batman is Val Kilmer due to some odd biased feelings, but then you proceed to show George Clooney 5:50 😅😆😂🤣

I agree completely with your take on Batman (1989). I think Keaton was great as Batman. Plus, now knowing he created the deep voice affectation for the character makes his portrayal even more valuable. And yes, Nicholson's portrayal of Joker is also one of my favorite versions.
My only issue with Tim Burton was what I consider to be his biggest F-up, Dark Shadows. Burton known for a dark edge to his films I thought would be perfect for Dark Shadows. Sadly, he turns into a horrible comedy. My guess is, like George Lucas, he is surrounded by a lot of Yes Men who just want to be involved in anything he makes. At some point during the production of Dark Shadows someone had to realize what a comedic disaster it was. Burton should forever stay away from outright comedy. Personally, I hope someone comes along and reboots Dark Shadows properly. Anything to wash away that horrible memory of Burton's destruction of an iconic series like Dark Shadows.
I think Burton did great work with the first Alice in Wonderland movie, using his darkness to bring a wonderful edge to the story.

How can this be the worst Batman in popular opinion? I grew up with this version, and it’s still my favorite Batman movie. I love Keaton as Batman, too. I reckon Kilmer and Clooney were the worst, but that’s not necessarily their fault

    • @agonleed3841
      @agonleed3841 2 ปีที่แล้ว

to be honest, there are ZERO bad batman movies. they all are great. It took me a while to get into the newer darker batman, but that wasn't the movies fault. I just felt everything at that time was becoming dark. like everything. TV shows, movies, etc. we, in America, went through a "I can be dark and gritty" phase and it was becoming boring.

Nicholson’s Joker is by far the best Joker portrayal on film to date and Ledgers portrayal is one of the most overrated performances on film of all time. In fact Dark Knight isn’t that great a movie at all and Batman Begins is Nolan’s best Batman.
Also Nicholson agreed to a lower salary upfront to be in the film but agreed to do it on the condition that he get a percentage of the gross of the MERCHANDISING of the film and THAT is his magical money move he made on this film. Any Batman the movie licensed product that was on sale in 1989 Jack got a piece of and that to me is legendary.
I believe that the Tim Burton Batman films are the best and that the Nolan films are just OK. Ledgers performance gets hyped because of his untimely death but ultimately his performance is lackluster like the rest of Dark Knight.

  • @amostlyreasonableguy

There is a visual appeal and design, a mystique, characterizations and moments in this film, with its incredible iconic score that are as good or better than Batman has ever appeared on screen. And I would argue that if they had made Batman more conflicted about wanting to kill the Joker at the end, more resistant to those impulses as a plot point despite his justified anger, with a little more emphasis on Batman’s motivation/methods (not necessarily as in depth as Begins) then this would be the best Batman movie.
As it stands it’s what I grew up on and watched hundreds of times, but it’s like the best Batman in moments and sequences but not necessarily as a total movie.
