    LOL, I think he actually means "Spared every expense" like "See, we're not wasting any government money" because the place is so sparse and industrial - it looks more like a parking garage than a high-tech futuristic lab. Also...Bruce McGill makes every movie better!
    17:33 this guy has probably never used a fountain pen before - those things are an ink explosion waiting to happen. Love the anachronistic music in the background.

      Fountain pens really aren't as troublesome as movies and TV have made them out to be. You're more likely to get ink on your hands while filling a fountain pen from a bottle of ink than from the open itself leaking on you. And cartridge pens eliminate that hassle completely. LOL

    It's comic book relation, timing, quality of presentation, Van Damme fans and lack of other more interesting films around release were what made this film a hit. During the 1990's people actually went to movie theaters EVERY Friday and Saturday evening. By 2000 several of the theaters here closed, I assume this happened everywhere.

    • @mr.pavone9719
      @mr.pavone9719 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Movie night was a big part of my weekends in the army. You have not truly gone to the movies until you sit in a packed theater full of drunk, rowdy GIs who have spent 3 weeks in the field. The level of audience participation during an action, horror or comedy film is unmatched.
      It's what going to the movies should always be. Cheap, raucous fun and a full bore experience.
      Any JCvD movie was guaranteed fun.

    • @jackwells8107
      @jackwells8107 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not really 2000. Actually, around here a lot of the theaters that closed were more because people were demanding better seating, so the theaters that stayed in business were either very cheap or the ones that had stadium seating and better concession stands.

    • @squamish4244

      Now due to streaming you get all these mid-budget kind of movies moving to television as movies or shows. Audiences more or less want blockbuster IP and Hollywood obliges. I think only blaming Hollywood for this or that is a semi-excuse, because Hollywood is ultimately a business like any other that gives people what they want. However, the $1-5 million movies still get made and take chances with theatrical audience tastes.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@josephwintrich7294 "Hollywood is out of ideas" is a cliche I have heard many times. The big blockbusters make inhuman amounts of money. Small films are often original and interesting because they can take more risks. A lot of the creativity has also moved to television, as many tv shows are basically like movies now but streaming services offer the great benefit of limited liability i.e. with subscriptions the success of the network is what matters relatively more now than the success of a particular show.

    You're right on both counts Red-Eye, my man. You cannot carbon-date gold, as carbon dating (more accurately called "radiocarbon 14 dating") measures the amount of an isotope of carbon (carbon 14) that is left in a given sample. And carbon is not present in gold, as gold (au on the Periodic Table of Elements) is its own element-- as is carbon..
    In order for radiometric carbon 14 dating to work, the sample to be tested must be a)I organic, which just means carbon based chemistry, not. _necessarily_ biological in nature and b) less than 60,000 years old. Science has other dating methods, but "carbon dating" is most famous among lay people.
    And you are spot on about the gold-- if it could be carbon dated-- would. Be the same age it was when the time-bandits (lol) brought it back to the future (lol again) which would be billions of years old as gold is one of the heavier than helium and hydrogen metals that formed in stars that then released it when they went supernova. That is how all elements besides hydrogen and helium formed.
    Yes, I am a pedantic uber-nerd! Cheers ;)

    • @fuzzybabyducks7878
      @fuzzybabyducks7878 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RedEyeReviews Technically you can carbon date gold to a degree, especially when it comes to older forgings, as it has organic impurities which can be dated. 60,000 year old Mapungubwe gold was able to be carbon dated because of organic inperfections found inside the gold bars. If for example the confederate gold had wood splinters in/around it from shipping or something, they would be able to date it.
      However, like you said.. it would be a very short time period if it was brought back, not 200+ years old.

    • @mitchellhorton9382
      @mitchellhorton9382 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fuzzybabyducks7878 I would think with gold, when dealing with the hundreds of years, you would just reverse calculate based on the decay due to oxidization

    • @soulknife20
      @soulknife20 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could look at the composition of the gold and see how much gold or where it came from to check the date. If its composition is from a particular mine that operated between certain years that could give you an idea of how old the gold is.

    • @munstrumridcully
      @munstrumridcully 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@soulknife20 oh yes I agree, there are ways to date things besides carbon-14 dating.
      I was just pointing out that you're not going to date gold with the carbon-14 dating method, cuz it just wouldn't work. For some reason, almost any time dating is mentioned in media, movies or even nonfiction, it is carbon dating-- even though there's many ways to date things. I mean, that's how we verify that carbon-14 dating is accurate-- we have ways to cross confirm it with other dating methods, which young earth creationists love to ignore when they attack carbon-14 dating as "completely unreliable" LOL

    I saw this film in the theaters as a kid on a Sunday afternoon, after staying at my friend's house on Friday and Saturday night. We hadn't slept for any of that period of time--we'd stayed up beating various Genesis and Super NES games--and by the time Sunday rolled around I was so delirious that it was basically the equivalent of tripping balls. I tried to stay awake to watch the movie, but kept falling asleep in the dark, cool theater; then I'd wake up periodically with only the vaguest idea of where I was, and no idea at all what was going on in the crazy movie I was seeing. Good times.

    I think That’s captain Braxton at 1:43, he served on board USS Relativity, he went rogue after encounters with the Voyager in the delta quadrant. I think this is how he started his career, as a time cop. Tempus Fugit…..captain Braxton

    Haven't seen this movie in a long time, but I think there was a pretty good ironic joke at 6:20 where someone says "Things will be better tomorrow" (or something like that) after the guy dies. This scene took place right before the stock market crash of 1929.
    The villain should have disintegrated like when a player gets telefragged by another player in Doom. The people who made Doom knew what would happen when two objects occupied the same place.
    Double Impact features duelling Van Dammes too. It's pretty amusing.

    The going forward thing is based on theoretical physics. It says that if time travel were possible, it would involve moving at the speed of light and some other crap, but it would only be backwards. And you couldn't come back cause that's going forward. So good catch on the logical fallacy.

    • @squamish4244
      @squamish4244 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tough because on the other hand our brains simply don't work non-linearly even though the quantum world is non-linear. We see logical fallacies but are the reality fallacies because logic has limits? Time travel makes my head hurt.
      But there are a few hypothesized ways around these problems in physics and if wormholes are real like general relativity allows for and recent research suggests could actually carry human-size objects through, I mean holy shit.

    So about the not-being-able-to-travel-to-the-future thing...
    When the agents/villains travel back in time they have those return modules that they trigger in order to return to the present --- I think those modules anchor them to that moment in time (the present) so, in essence, they're not 'travelling to the future' but rather 'returning to the present'.
    Best explanation I can come up with. Don't know if that makes sense?
    The biggest plot hole for me is the method they use: those rail cars travelling at high speeds toward the wall. At the moment they time-travel the G's are so intense that they have those cartoony faces and are screaming in agony. Also, like you pointed out, they claim they can't target a specific place - hence, why they land in the lake and JCVD almost gets flattened by the truck. And yet...
    JCVD, at the start of the film, and the villains - whenever they time-travel - all arrive at very specific places (office; factory) and are seen casually walking through the time portal - you know, like they didn't almost just suffer a high-speed aneurysm.
    Awesome review --- love this film, despite its holes! xD

    Great review! Wished you had covered a classic line from the final act: "You see, I'm an ambitious, Harvard-educated visionary who deserves to be the most powerful man in the world. And you...you're a f**king idiot who never figured out the only way to make anything of himself with that all that fancy kicking was on Broadway."
    Ron Silver did an excellent job playing the smug, arrogant villain.

    16:24 Going forward in time in the context they were talking about was going into the future from where they were at that point in time in their timeline (The present). It meant that they could go back in time to a time that had already happened, but they couldn't go forward in time to a time that hadn't happened yet beyond their present. So Van Damme could go back in time from whatever year he originally left, but he couldn't go forward in time beyond whatever year he originally left.

    14:37 I can not believe JCVD would want a stunt double for this. I would bet the producers just didn't wanna shell out for JCVD to film a few pick up shots, and hoped nobody would ever have the internet to disassemble movie flubs so fine and intensely.

    I think the time travel paradox in this is meant to say that if you have traveled back from a point in time, you can return to it. However, you can't move forward from that original point.

    With both Mccombs out of the way, wouldn't that cause the entirety of the TEC to no longer exist? Thereby causing the "future" Walker to simply disappear as he would no longer have the job at TEC...since it no longer needs to exist?

    • @RedEyeReviews
      @RedEyeReviews  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I over thought it so much haha. Why would the girl not exist in the future? She got shot as a future person in the past...so her past self is still alive and kicking and would grow up.

  • @fingfangfoom8062
    @fingfangfoom8062 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The "can't go to the future" thing means they can't go ahead of the current date. That doesn't negate the idea of going back and forth between the beginning of time and your original date.

  • @tommyapples8490

    If your matter (you) are from the future, you can return to that time. If your matter ( you) is in the present, you cannot go to the future. You can only return to the future from the past, not jump to a future that never existed.

    0:30 People were still wearing jackets (MA-1 flight jacket in that case) with the sleeves pushed up like that this far into the '90s? I was a teenager at the time and I don't recall ever seeing anyone doing that.
    4:42 Sleeves pushed up (or rolled up) AND he has a mullet?! Somehow, even though he's come from 2004, he's even MORE retro than he was in 1994!
    5:33 You don't necessarily need fancy futuristic weapons in 1929. The 1934 gun control act hadn't been passed yet, so an everyday Jojo could get their mitts on all the best stuff that was available at the time, including but not limited to a Tommy Gun or a Colt R75.
    13:08 No 'Enter Sandman' reference?! Denied!
    16:33 As Kyle Reese said, "Nobody goes home."
    18:02 6:20 PM in June? Judging by those shadows, looks more like 4:00 PM.
