Stallone had the PERFECT jawline to play Dredd.
But as a fan of the comics, the fact that he stays most of the movie without his helmet is heresy.

    • @Ticketman99

It's not that he's not wearing his helmet, it's that his face was shown. THAT is where the problem is.

I never read the comics, but I feel your pain. The halo show has butchered master chief. The strong silent faceless badass is now someone that almost never wears his helmet(or clothes in general), is irrationally angry and constantly screaming and someone who is dumb enough to sleep with covenant spies

As a reader of Judge Dredd comic books, I can't get over the moment where Dredd takes off his helmet. It was a huge mistake. Therefore, "Dredd" (2012) starred by Karl Urban is hundred times better (and more violent and brutal) Judge Dredd movie.

They made the same mistake with The Shadow. Lamont Cranston has a face, but the Shadow doesn't run around without his scarf. Don't hire a name actor for an iconic hero if you can't go without plastering his face all over the movie.

If Paul Verhoeven had made this it would be a classic. Humor in a Dredd movie isn't necessarily a bad idea, the comics were very satirical, with sugar treated like cocaine, literal Fast Food Wars, etc...

Yeah, I agree. Verhoeven is one of the few filmmakers out there who could actually grasp 2000AD's caustic humor, since he did "Robocop", which was heavily inspired by Judge Dredd. Another likely guy would've been Richard Stanley (the director of "Color Out Of Space"): his first movie, "Hardware", was unofficially based on a Dredd story (a spin-off of the "Cursed Earth" miniseries) and, when you really look at it, it does show hints of 2000AD-style humor. Despite the fact the production got sued by the magazine, forcing them to acknowledge the original material in the credits, Stanley himself was actually offered the Judge Dredd movie but turned it down to make "Dust Devil", his second, ill-fated horror movie. Apparently, he had already signed on it while they were finishing "Hardware" since the producers were the same.

10 Things you didn't know about JUDGE DREDD (1995):
    10. Director Danny Cannon and Diane Lane (Judge Hersey) had an affair while making the film. This caused the end of her marriage to HIGHLANDER actor Christopher Lambert.
    9. The Lawgivers in the film were heavily modified Beretta 92FS handguns. These same props were recycled into the sidearms used by Ron Perelman's character Reinhardt in BLADE II
    8. The obnoxious motorist was named "Souza" after Steven de Souza, one of the film's screenwriters.
    7. The Aerial bike chase was based on the Speeder biker chase from RETURN OF THE JEDI.
    6. Several of the store fronts seen in the film were named after members of the production team.
    5. There were several scenes of Dredd blasting the newly hatched clones that got deleted from the final print.
    4. Stallone and Assante had previously played brothers in the 1978 film PARADISE ALLEY.
    3. Jurgen Prochnow who played Griffin was the dubbed voice of Stallone in the German language version of several of his films, including CREED II.
    2. Even though both Stallone and Assante have brown eyes, they both wore blue contacts in the film to better show they are the "sons" of the blue eyed Max Von Sydow.
    1. In the film the Antique Dealer warns Rico not to touch the Lawgiver saying "it'll take your arm off". The security mechanism in the film though is shown to electrocute a non Judge instead. This warning was finally fulfilled in the movie DREDD (2012) where the self defense mechanism does take the arm off a crook who picks it up by exploding.

17 year old me hadn't read the comics and knew pretty much nothing about the character but after seeing Stallone yell "I am the law" in the trailer I knew I had to check this movie out...and I loved it. It has everything, just the right amount of 80's cheese, great score, great action set pieces and Diane Lanes sweet sweet ass. Sure the 2012 movie is objectively a better "dredd" movie but I prefer this one because it's good for the environment and ok for you....plus it acted as a springboard for Rob Schneider who landed the role of a carrot after appearing in judge dredd and received no less than 9 academy awards for his portrayal of the orange vegetable.

I remember seeing this in theaters as a young teenager and boy was I let down. I was a fan of the comics and should have known of the almost whiplash tonal shift between the two when I saw the trailer but nope I went to it full of excitement to see a pretty bleak take on society and justice. I didn’t get that. Nope I got Rob Schneider chewing the scenery. The only person that seemed to understand the material was Armand Asante.
To me this was a huge misstep… a kid friendly comedy about a dystopian future. Tonal dissonance at its worst.
Honestly Paul Veerhoven did it better with Robocop and Starship Trooper. He was able to do comedy in such settings because it was tongue in cheek and always contrasted with ultra violence.
Well at least we got Dredd years later which was a bit of a pallet cleanser.

to explain the fire, the actual source of the fire might be a different part of the wall mechanism, and inside that tunnel their may have been some ventilation for the fire to get INTO the tunnel on the walls of the tunnel and they just happen to get past it before it went off and then had to outrun said fire, but that's just speculation because the movie doesn't tell us any of this

Since i watched this as a kid im definitely biased but for me this was a great movie lol i grew up in a time where Ny movie that had Stallone or Arnold was pure gold. Demolition man, Judge Dredd, Collateral damage, Total Recall, That movie with Arnold where he has a clone. They probably havent aged well but nostalgia eases the cringe.

I believe planes are held aloft by lift created by the shape of their wings specifically
in this case I would say that's a "ship" using some advanced tech to stay in the air because it doesn't seem capable of generating enough aerodynamic lift

It was just hilarious, but the helmet, man, it was like, part of his skull or something. Who didn't tell Stallone about it?
