  • Learn the switch kick with Fightcoach. The idea of the switch is to be able to kick a hard roundhouse kick also from the side of the lead leg. The switching of the stance enables the fighter to be in the perfect position to deliver a left kick (in the case of an orthodox fighting stance). The switch should be done quickly for a power kick. The “jump” related with the switch should not be a vertical obvious one, as not to “telegraph” the upcoming kick to the opponent. As with the regular rear leg roundhouse kick, the fighter must turn the hip and the supporting foot for power, and keep his guard up for protection.

Dear FightCoach, could you please help me with a question? I have been doing my switch kick like this in my Muay Thai class but my teacher says this is incorrect, and that i 'hop' too much when switching my legs, thus losing power....but I believed I was doing it correctly, according to this video that you posted. I am so confused! Is it because my instructor is not Thai and is maybe doing it in a more western style? He says I should 'scoot' as opposed to 'hop', but this is very uncomfortable for me because it causes my muscles in my legs to tense up too much. I feel too stiff! Please help!

You can try some Yoga and weighted squats. Yoga will limber you up and stimulate blood-flow and weighted squats will also stimulate blood-flow and increase overal strenght.

Note that in this video he is not hopping. You should try to maintain your height while switching. In that sense your instructor from 4 years ago was right

in slow motion he shows that he brings left leg back first then put his right leg forward then kick but in speed up he switch them at the same exact time cant figure out why

There is one switch kick tutorial video explaining that concept that that's what's supposed to happen. You'll get it right after practicing a lot and doing some drills.

They are just slowing the process down to explain the flow better.. You should not jump/hop, per se, when switching but rather "scoot" (which will require a very subtle hop of sorts).. which is the hardest part.. They do that thing in the vid to emphasize that aspect. When switching, your waist and eye level should not change from normal stance so as not to telegraph the move.. So you scoot (with the little hop of sorts), but instead of moving your whole body, move only your legs, contract a bit at the knees while trying your best to not change the height level of your waist and most importantly your eyes
Some people do the switch after setting up a combo of punches and swiftly step-in to the switch instead of the subtle hop, some people feint a low kick (from dominant) to setup the switch. But what they show here is the core technique

Honestly I've trained muaithai for a year 4-5 times a week including sparring light and hard 1-2 times a week and this technique gets me a half boner.
Also the kicking in slower pace is really impressive its harder to do perfectly then to kick normally in my experience atleast, ofcourse im a novice compared to these guys.

Yes because when it's slow you dont have power and momentum to do it properly, but he still did really good when showing it in a slow pace
