one thing I learned is to treat the unknown people like your friends you talk to daily. I always found it easy to make my friends laugh, because they reflect my personality and I'm comfortable with them. So, if you're talking to somebody you don't know that well, just ask yourself; "what would I say to ____ ?"
That's actually also a trick in a book " how to talk to anyone by leil loundes" called meeting an Old Friend.. In which when talking to a stranger, Treat them like an old friend...
Thanks! This clears up the lifelong confusion of why people say I'm hilarious when I'm just being myself, an autistic person who literally takes everything literally and has zero filters.

1) purposefully misinterpret the other person's question or comment (expand on it); answer non literally (switch from answering sincerely to non literally) 2) create improv scenes - when someone cracks a joke expands on it by pretending that the premise is true; add a character with an unique voice; add specificity (use uncommon words that make sense in that scenario) 3) lower my filter - allow myself to speak whats on my mind even though I don't think its interesting with clarity and power; SET THE INTENTION TO SAY ONE MORE SENTENCE IN EVERY CONVERSATION THAN I WOULD USUALLY DO
Watching Step 3 with ADHD: Oh. OH. So that's what that is? Gooootcha. This makes a looooot of sense It's always awesome to see something we regularly get in trouble for (the inability to filter) reframed as a positive (the ability to lower your filter) Thanks!
I do the "expand the joke" thing all the time and people HATE it. I dunno if I'm "too good" at acting like I've missed the point or what, but I'm constantly met with "it's a joke" and I then have to explain "I *know* it's a joke, I thought it would be funnier if I ran with it". I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, or if I'm just hanging out with the wrong people (because it is usually the same handful of people who react that way). I find taking throw away jokes seriously and responding to them absolutely hilarious, but apparently people don't realize that's what I'm doing and think I somehow missed the sarcasm or whatever.
with some people you have to make it really obvious that you're joking. i have one friend who is super deadpan with his jokes and i usually pick up on them, especially if he's making a reference, but sometimes i miss them. deadpan humour can be hilarious but it doesn't always work bc people don't read it as a joke lol
Smile at the begining obviously, hinting that you are going to do something with the said joke. Then act all serious. It would help them understand that you are joking.

One of my favorite ways to practice is at the grocery store. While I'm shopping I'll pick one item and develop a joke about it to use at the cashier. Let's say a bag of pistachios. As I finish emptying my cart on the belt I'll look puzzlingly at the bag and look like I'm being indecisive, and then I'll randomly shout "ah hell, let's go nuts!" As I toss the bag of pistachios on the belt. It's gotten the point where I'll see someone putting serious thought into fruit selection and comment "you've got to make sure you're bringing home a good one!"
I like to practise with service people because I'll never see them again. Just last night I was riding a taxi and the driver asked me to type in the amount on the card machine and pay in advance because he was in a hurry. He joked about something like "self service, you get to pay by yourself" and I was like "atleast I don't have to drive by myself ha ha" Got a good chuckle out of him lol
