When I was a kid, I was a competitive IPMS builder. After I joined the military, all my displays were broken in moves and then as I got older, my eyes got worse and my motivation declined. After twenty years of modeling intermission, I recently started again thanks to you. You motivated me to take up the hobby again. Thank you.

My wifes grandfather was with an anti-tank company in the 85th Division in Italy. There are pictures in his album of these that were abandoned by the Germans who used them to guard airfields.

Did you know that the 'dome' on the turret actually had a slot or clasp that the commander plug his helmet in and turn it with his head to use the sight for the cupola

Hello Andy, I just finished my own R35 tank. Build was easy. Paint was a big challenge. Thanks for the painting advice. Paint pen worked fantastically. I did the 5 color le baffle version.

Great subject, funny though the French spent all that time and effort on the camo and then painted bullseye targets all over them. Thanks Andy handy tip the paint pen.

Polish army in 1939 had around 50 R-35 tanks so it can be easly painted as a Polish variant. Especially that version is unique.

Tamiya producing some great kits these last several years and this is kit is no exeception . What is both enjoyable and challenging is painting and weathering early WW2 French tanks , using both airbrush and paint brush . Plenty of reference material out there too. Looking forward when my kit is in stock and arrives on my work bench.

Dear Andy , thanks for this video , I would just like to mention that last year I was watching this series on Netflix called World War Two in colour , and it had some coloured footage of French tanks being assembled and painted , they airbrushed the black lines first and then fill in later
    . Nice video

Fun fact, Poland ordered and received a batch of R35 tanks, they kept their french camo when the war started. Some of the polish r35 were captured by soviets, and one survived in kubinka museum

The Tamiya extra thin cement works great for gluing those individual track links together. I was using regular model cement and end up gluing the track links to the tweezers. I use a spare computer fan to blow the fumes of the Tamiya thin cement away

Great video!!!! Definitely will get this kit of the R35 tank from Tamiya. Have attempted this same vehicle from other manufacturers and would always end in failure. With Tamiya precision engineering, should FINALLY have a kit of this vehicle completed. Also, love the French camo patterns, have done that on the Char B1 bis and S35 tanks - looks great.

I Like how it has that “old style” Tamiya artwork back, Just like the new KV-1 kit. Kit looks Great And eminently buildable. My Only regret is it not having the earlier round episcopes as an option.

  • @Taffer-bx7uc

I believe the factories initially painted the tanks before issuing them to the troops. Some of the factories came up with some very gaudy and exotic color schemes. Anyway, eventually they moved to a more basic three tone simplified style later on. If memory serves me correctly.

  • @moendopi5430

I just finished this tank. Wonderful fit. But I must has done something wrong because I did do the track similar to you, but I had a lot more trouble with getting them to fit. Also, word to the wise: the fit is actually so tight on this, priming your parts ahead of time will cause them not to fit right. I did that and my commander's cupola literally wouldn't pop in and turn. Great kit all the same.

Interesting vehicle, first line french but 2nd or 3rd rate when captured by Germany. I wonder if the reason the museum tanks and color pictures show them as having a gloss paint is that they were waxed? If I remember at that time the french were into neat and shiny equipment.

Another great model, Andy! I was thinking of painting the model overall black first (when it comes out of course), and then using a thin string of Silly Putty to mask the the black on the camouflage. Think that will work or is the model to small for that? As well, do you ever use a paint brush for overall painting (i.e. tires) or are you strictly an "airbrush man" for painting?

  • @stephicohu

Just finished the tracks only to discover each side was too short by a single tread. For the life of me I cannot figure where I went wrong; there's no slack in the other links that would allow for the ends not to match up. (Maybe I'm just losing it.) Be nice if Tamiya would include a few extra track links to help in circumstances like this, as well those inevitable times when a single link goes flying off the tweezers never to be seen again.
