  • An owl house theory video essay about Camila Noceda, and the Reality Check Camp. Since the midseason finale for season 2A 'Yesterday's Lie', there has been much discussion and discourse around Luz’s mom Camila and her response to Luz being trapped on the Boiling Isles. Waiting for new episodes, news, announcements, teasers, trailers, or at least answers, Bill hopes to examine, break down, and collect his thoughts on the subject and what it could mean in The Owl House by Dana Terrace (Disney Channel). (SPOILER WARNING for The Owl House Season 2A from Separate Tides to Yesterday's Lie) Let him know if you want more theory videos, or what to watch/listen to next in the comments, and don't forget to like the video, subscribe, and ring the bell if you're so inclined!

I never got the impression that Camila wanted Luz to be "normal". She doesn't get upset at Luz for not wanting to go. Heck, I don't I remember her genuinely smiling throughout that whole thing about sending Luz to camp. It was a tough decision that she knew might hurt her and Luz's relationship, as she knows how much Luz cares about the things she does, but also thought that it was ultimately going to help her in the long run. And while Luz obviously didn't agree with going to camp, she knows that her mom's just doing what she think is best for her. Otherwise, I don't think Luz would have spent all that time missing her mom and trying to contact her and find a way back
I really need the rest of season 2 already

    1. The people who love and respect Camila Noceda as a hard-working single mom trying her best to raise her daughter and doing what she thinks is best for her in the long-term, while still loving and respecting her

I also never see anyone bash Eda for being a flawed character/mother. For example I n Eda’s Requiem she actively avoids talking to Luz and King, brushing their concerns aside, and also running off instead of watching a race that was very important to them. We of course know that this was because she loved them, and was scared that they were going to leave her, but it still sucked for her to do that!
Eda’s flawed too but because we get more context and screen time for her, there’s not as much unadulterated hate lol.
(Also I won’t go into details, but I actually grew up with emotionally and otherwise abusive parents, and I can confirm Camila is not it. I could really relate to Vee when she said she resented Luz for running away. I WISH my parents were more like Camila.)

How? She tried to send Luz away to Brainwashing the summer camp. She showed significant progress and then lost it all by trying to force Luz to stay with her and once again abandon everything she is and loves and has come to know. She could have withheld judgment or plan making pending more context or extended trust to her daughter but she snapped right back to “what you want is wrong because it’s different from what I want come back where I can control you. I don’t care about hearing you out.” That’s not a parent. That’s not love. That’s emotional and psychological abuse. I grew up with that and worse and anyone who thinks that’s healthy or ok are the ones who need a “reality check”

@@NovelistVampireGirl What are you talking about? Did you not watch the episodes? Did you not hear how many times Camila said she LOVED LUZ'S CREATIVITY? How she was saddened by the fact, Luz aka Vee was throwing out things she loved and loved to make for her. Did you miss how she easily took in a monster who had been pretending to be her daughter for months because she trusted Luz's word? Even making connections to the things Luz takes interest in like anime or "larping." I love anime, always have but if I asked my mom what anime was she wouldn't be able to answer. The fact is she wanted her child to be successful in life as do most parents and watching your child make no friends and continuously get in trouble, she tried to do what she thought could help. I mean Luz brought live snakes to school! I hate to think about what my mom would've done if I brought live snakes(that caused injuries to other people) to the school I was attending. Definitely not just getting my ass beat. But she took the time to TALK to her and though they didn't show it earlier, drive her all the way to a place she knew she would feel uncomfortable going to, to show comfort and care. And as for her telling Luz to promise to stay(after promising herself to change for her), it makes perfect sense, what mother would want their child to be in an unknown, dangerous world filled with monsters. She doesn't know the full story. she reacted at the moment from the information she had just been given. And this all happened in what? Less than a day? I'd be a complete mess if I was Camila. My first words to my kid would've been; where are you? Are you safe? PLEASE COME HOME. All of which she said to Luz.

@@NovelistVampireGirl Of the kids that were V'a friends, how many of them would you say were brainwashed? They literally had one using Hexas hold 'em as cards.
Camilla wasn't trying to brainwash Luz. She was simply trying to a)Temper Luz's creativity to a point that she wasn't endangering students & staff (lest we forget why she was sent to the principal's office) and 2)Get Luz to make friends.
Camilla loves Luz's creativity but her creativity is intefering to the point of that expression being dangerous to others. Camilla didn't know about this magical fantasy land Luz is in now. The camp was most likely a last resort to get loose to learn what is ok and what isn't when expressing her creativity. As for Camilla making Luz promise to stay with her, I chalk that up to all the emotion and fear Camilla had because she has no way to protect her daughter. She's scared about exactly where she is and can't do any of things she as a mother should be abe to do.
Both have made mistakes. And yeah, maybe the camp was an extreme option. But Luz's creativity was also extreme in a bad way. Given how accepting she is of V, that she goes along with Luz even though she doesn't believe her at first, and yes, even begging her daughter to promise to stay with her, all indicate Camilla is doing her best as a single a single mom. .

As someone who has an abusive mother and is neurodivergent, Luz's mom is clearly doing her best and while she might not get it 100% she's far from abusive. Hell, considering that the camp didnt seem that bad based on some of the kids we saw, the pamphlet we saw in the first episode might've been just a really bad one XD. After all "think inside the box" can be quite traumatic irl, so my guess it was bad advertising or the pamphlet we saw was more what luz's perspective thought of it.
Addition: I'd also like to point out that when she thought luz was acting too strangely, it wasn't just not what she wanted. She seemed genuinely concerned, like as if Luz didn't clear everything up she would have tried to see if anything fishy happened.

I think the people who think Camilla is a bad parent lack an understanding of a two major things.
    1. an understanding of human emotions and how they impact our actions. Stress can couse us to do unrational things. Parents making there children promise something the child doesn't want to promise happens quiet a lot. With the difference here beeing that it more often than not happens out of anger, while Camilla acted out of desperation. I also don't think she will hold Luz to that promise. It's clear that Camilla cares A LOT about her daughter, going so far as to get all her stuff back inside the house after Vee threw it out (before even knowing that Vee wasn't Luz). If Luz finds a way to travel freely between the realms, I give Camilla 1 week max. One week of "holding" Luz to the promise and seeing her daughter suffer over having lost all her friends before Camilla revokes the promise and instead makes Luz promise to simply "come back safe".
Most parents don't hold there kids to those kind of imprompt promisses. But from what I've seen only a hand full of them actually TELL there kid that the promise is off. For Camilla, I think she will have an actual talk about it with her daughter.
    2. that Camps like that are more often than not "recomented" by the school, not picked by the parents (for real, did you guys LISTEN to how Camilla sounded explaining camp activitys to Luz? xD I don't know about you, but she neather sounded confinced or like she would have fun there herselfe xD)
As a kindergardener in training, I know that we are the once who often recoment things like that, including visits to doctors or therapy depending on different scenarious. It's literally our job helping parents to notice things they might not have, and point them in directions that might help them if they feel lost about what to do to help there child. (Though I personally wouldn't have recomented a camp with that sort of tag line. That was eather the WORST marketing in existenc of markting, or the most uneviciant camp ever if they where truly aiming for "thinking inside the box" concidering the Camp kids we see are still pretty "weard" and free spirited xD) And Camilla verry clearly feelt lost. This was Luz 4th visit to the principal, in what we can asume was less than a year. Sure, the eye thing wasn't that big of a deal, and the romeo and juliet thing depends on if she talked to her theater teacher about it first to clear things up for her "interpretation" of that scene (which I highly doubt, becouse if she had she probably wouldn't have been send to the principle). But both the griffin and especially the snake incidents are valid reasons for a kid to get in trouble. Camilla seemed pretty overwhelmed with how to help Luz. She loves her daughters imagintaion and free spirit, but she is also worried about the fact that Luz has no friends and get's into more trouble at school. This is EXACTLY the kind of scenario where a teacher or someone of similar potition would step in and try to give Camilla advice what to do, and she would obviously accept it becouse she want's the best for her daughter.

I think the important thing to remember is that Camila never intended to crush Luz's creativity by sending her to camp, she just wanted to pull her into reality (hah) a bit. luz was getting in trouble not just for being weird, but for bringing wild animals into school (and FIREWORKS). She was getting to the age where making those sort of mistakes again and again, despite being told repeatedly not to, was simply not acceptable. I don't doubt that that Luz's nonconformity was seen as Bad by the school (it IS still school) but I feel that Camila was more worried about the active danger that Luz was putting herself, her classmates, and the faculty in.

Oh! Bill! About Luz's art an creativity: One of the Owl Pellets shorts has her give basic instruction on how to use simple geometric shapes to block out a bigger picture. And, as a fun fact-Dana Terrace admitted in an interview with It'srebeccarose that she'd met Ken Sugimori (The OG Pokémon designer) and admitted to him that she learned how to art by tracing Pokémon designs and has subsequently confirmed that Luz also started getting into art by tracing over manga.

My headcanon (spoilery and CW-esque in same way as this vid is?) regarding absent dad: My personal fan theory is Luz's dad is in prison, rather than dead, divorced or absent. This, to me, would more clearly explain why Camila is terrified of her daughter getting into trouble, or falling into a vicious circle of maladaptive behaviour in school.
idk what the charge is in this head-canon of mine, but since she still has their family portrait on display it's probably nothing too malevolent. But Camila's words at the end of YL make it sound like she's terrified of being separated from her remaining family.
Being in another world might as well be dead, yes; but alive and unable to come home for an extended period of time connects to the themes of detainment more tightly, I feel.

I think some of this may boil down to an age difference in the audience, like as someone who's an adult, i can see Camilla's reaction to Luz being the Isles as kinda reasonable, like, if my 14 years old daughter was in a dangerous place with no means of comunicating with me, i would be extremely upset, even if i knew she was beinf taken care of, i would want her to be back home, imagine going each day knowing your kid could be in danger and you may never see them again, and all this is without taking all the specific emotional baggage these 2 have. But sometimes is harder for younger people to see parents as nuance humans, or even see things from their point of view, it's just a part of life

I was really surprised when we saw Vee's friends from camp and learned they were genuinely cool. It seemed to imply that even an outcast like Luz could have found friends there if she gave it a chance. Shadoweaver's death was almost portrayed as a heroic sacrifice which feels weirdly off key from the rest of her story being a manipulative and abusive parent. I think it would have been better if she tried to save herself or just bailed. Otherwise, it just feels like the authors were trying to redeem close to two decades of abuse with one act. I wonder if the first episode being slightly off balance lead to some of the hate for Camila. The episode basically conflates her having to go to camp with Warden Wrath's prison locking people away for just being a bit weird.
But it's really not an apples to apples situation. Luz was bringing dangerous animals to school and was going to set off fireworks, presumably INSIDE THE SCHOOL. Even accounting for some cartoon logic, that's a lot different than 'I write fanfiction so I was thrown in jail.'
Camila is worried about her daughter and clearly doesn't want her to lose her creativity even in the pilot. She just wants Luz to reign it in a bit to be functional in society and school. Yesterday's Lie helps drive this in more, but if you pay attention it was clear even in the pilot. And honestly the line about calling camp prison just felt like a joke from the one teen. It read to me more as a teen over exaggerating the situation than an accurate representation of it. None of those kids seem like they had their souls or creativity crushed by the camp. So I'm not under the impression that it was actually that bad. It seems to me less like an oppressive reprogramming camp and more probably just kind of boring for someone like Luz.

Honestly, when I saw the first episode Camilla seemed more like a concern mother that doesn't know how to deal with her daughter's actions going out of control and trying to do what she thinks is best for her.
Luz needed to learn to experience life and not just live out her fantasies, to make connections with others and deal with the consequences of her actions, and Camilla didn't know how to help her with it so she thought this camp will help.
We also see that she is very concerned about her daughter, trying to reassure her that it will be okey and to let her understand she is doing it out of concern and not to punish her.
Yesterday's lie just confirmed me that, even showing us how she don't want Luz to stop being creative.

The only thing I can think of is that since this is a y7 show some of the younger viewers must just not understand an adult's perspective. I mean I love Luz but you would have to be a negligent parent to ignore the obvious behavior problems she had. So she was going to send her to a reality check camp, it doesn't sound like it was exactly a torture chamber listening to Vee talk about it and Luz definitely needed some kind of intervention. I've heard absolutely HORRIFIC stories about the abuse that goes on in real-life camps (both the "gay conversion" and "troubled teen" kind), and it's hard to hold that kind of knowledge and then see some people say that Camilla did absolutely nothing wrong.
Now, I doubt that TOH was intending for this camp to be like those real-life camps, and I absolutely believe that Camilla loves Luz and was always attempting to make the best decisions for her. But the writers chose to put in a plot device that is going to immediately invoke a strong reaction in a lot of people (especially people who have faced backlash for being queer, neurodivergent, "weird", etc-- which are the type of people that this show is targeting). No, Camilla is not the scum of the earth for making a mistake, but it's definitely understandable why some people aren't a fan of her actions and are projecting their own experiences onto her decisions.

      THANK YOU.
I think that the first episode has a legit tone problem. They were making jokes about sending Luz to conversion camp. It was a joke that would have fit right in with a show like fairly odd parents, where most of the jokes were about how abusive and neglectful TT’s home life was. You don’t get to write a story about sending your child to fucking conversion theory and then act surprised when some people bounce hard off of her.
Add that to the way that mirror Luz was begging her mom to help Vee, and Camila doesn’t even pay attention to her or take her seriously.

    • @AZDfox
      @AZDfox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

@@marialarson1711 1: at no point is it even implied that it's a conversion camp. That's a wild assumption. It's like if a character was told to get therapy for their dangerous behavior, and everyone assumed it was conversion therapy.
2: Camila DID help Vee, and no one can blame her for not believing Luz. Luz has been shown to sometimes have trouble separating fantasy from reality (ie the reason she was going to camp) and was telling Camila a wild and unbelievable story.

    • @Gildedpossum
      @Gildedpossum 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I can understand people reflecting on their own trauma in the situation and that's valid, however I don't think connecting the camp to her later introduced sexuality and making it a direct, planned metaphor is fair. A "bigger picture" thing the writers could have curtailed? Yeah maybe, but I don't think it's fair to put that onto Camila's character when it was clearly about Luz's dangerous behavior that would have very much gotten her expelled had it continued. Again, the impact was obviously not good and communication was needed, but as someone with an overworked single mom, I can understand that when she was given this option it seemed like the best thing for her.
And again, impact over intent, but that doesn't make Camila a terrible person or mother

I think a lot of it is people taking the S1E1/pilot plot to be gospel - really it was very heavily from Luz's perspective, who is bummed out that the grown-ups are impeding her individuality (and no thought of their responsibilities).
This, combined with the episode having Normie Camp directly juxtaposed to the Conformatorium. The framing was heavily loaded to make the audience go Heck Yeah Individualist Expression (one of the prisoners was literally a fanfic writer), and everything from there followed organically.
Mundane Connecticut was replaced with Wildly Sensory Boiling Isles, the inciting action (stranger in a strange land) was "perfect". And then S1E2? Literal twenty minute reality check. But the "can't go back" is set up, and she's going to find home in these other characters, so it makes sense it's distancing from Camila.
idk, I think the whole thing is set up to make Camila seem distant/antagonistic for the plot to pick up pace: it would have made no sense if Luz had the "I gotta get back right now" crisis whilst the door was in tact and Eda was wanting to get rid of her, lol

  • @ChipoSkippy
    @ChipoSkippy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

My problem with Camilla isn’t that she wanted Luz to ease of the crazy stunts and general chaos, that’s good parenting. It’s that instead of spending time with her daughter and helping her figure out what is ok and what is too much, she was going to send her away to a camp that most likely would have made her miserable. Luz probably needed a stronger hand and some tough love, but it should have come from her mother, not some camp counselors. For Luz not having friends, Camilla could have worked with her to find others who shared her interests. I get she is a single parent, it’s hard work raising a child alone, but if Camilla would have put the effort in, I feel Luz would have seen it and would work to meet her mom in the middle. All in all Camilla was, to me, taking the easy way out. For Luz “choosing” to stay in the demon realm, she had Belos after her, and she has grow to love and care for people in the boiling isles. Running away from them and leaving them for the safety of the human world isn’t in Luz’s character. Camilla didn’t even question how much “Luz” had changed while Vee was impersonating her. She was a bit concerned, but never asked about it. She may have tried to preserve some of Luz’s things, but she was still overtly passive when seeing such a radical change in her daughter. I’m not a parent, but that’s just my thoughts.

End of the day, we're not a fly on the wall to any of the conversations Vee and Camila had; but Vee would have consciously been trying to match the girl she was imitating, too. Maybe it would have been brushed off as stress or anxiety, rather than magic impostors. Who's to say?

Wasn’t the camp a recommendation from the principal? Honestly sometimes parents don’t know how to help their kids it’s perfectly reasonable to think sending Luz to a program recommended by the school might be a good idea. Camilla noticed how Vee was acting different when she was trying to throw out Luz’s stuff and grabbed it to put away in case “Luz” changed her mind.

I think that a solid portion of the people calling Camilla abusive are early/pre-teens who don’t have the lived experience to understand flawed parents.
I remember being 14 years old and thinking my mum was cruel and heartless because of the things she had said to me over the years, and only very recently, at nearly 22, I realised that while yes, she had said some cruel things, no, she really hadn’t meant them with the intensity I’d assumed. It equally took her a while to realise I needed a real, heartfelt, thorough apology to be able to move past it. Should she have called me “entitled” for not knowing to wash the dishes that one time? Probably not. Should I have taken it to heart and assumed she had always and would always think it of me? Also probably not. But emotions get the better of us and make conversations that should be no issue… well, into an issue.
I believed I hated my mum. I didn’t. She screwed up plenty. So did I. It’s easy to extrapolate and exaggerate a situation when you feel personally involved. And young teens are dumb! It’s the whole point! I didn’t know jack about shit! It can also be hard, as a parent, to admit you fucked up. I feel the same way when I realise I’ve unintentionally hurt a friend’s feelings over a comment that meant nothing to me, but everything to them.
Camilla is not abusive (particularly confirmed with S3E1), she just wants her daughter to have an easy life. And if her daughter’s life gets complicated, she’s ride or die, by her side.
(I’m just saying, if Camilla had the passive income to cover it, she’d have homeschooled Luz. No doubt in my mind whatsoever)

From first hand experience, teachers love to push parents into "fixing" their kid how they see fit. She doesn't force Luz to go. She seems like a very caring and empathic person, who wants to do what's best for her daughter and others around her. Like any other person, she's flawed and needs to grow. She was one of the people getting caught up in Luz's actions that got her in the principals office(the eyelid flip was overreacting) and if you were saying if she found human Amity they would get a crush on each other wouldn't happen. Camilla is a good mom, she just wanted Luz to not get in trouble at school and dial her weirdness down a little so she won't do things like with the spiders, snakes, and fire works and she looked like she was second guessing Luz going to camp when she wasn't being creative and happy when she thought she was.
