- This is a video that I've been wishing to make for a long time, the personal story of my confrontation with Polish grammar. Polish is one of the hardest languages in the world and In my opinion its not a question of the difficult sounds but the grammar which governs the language itself.

But, anyway, Polish is not difficult. I learnt it when I was 3! So you just need to hear it enough, and then you learn automatically. ;)

p.s + I live in Kaliningrad and love Polska and Polish people, especially Gdansk and Warshawa.

As a slovak and czech native, polish language is extremely easy for me to learn. My brother went working to Great Britain for 3 months and came back fluent polish :)
I'm Pole, and my boyfriend (frajer ;D) is from Slovakia- he and all his family speak polish very well! Some of his friends also know polish because, as they say, they spent their entire childhood watching Polsat and "13 posterunek" :D. I think you have great skills to learn languages. :)

Polacy boją się mówić w innych językach. Pomijam inny poziom nauki wiele lat temu i teraz, ale nadal ludzie boją się odezwać, bo ktoś ich wyśmieje (inni Polacy), że tak kiepsko mówi po angielsku. Wystarczy jeden kontakt z nacjami innymi niż z natywnym angielskim i czar pryska. Okazuje się, że Niemcy, Francuzi, Turcy, Włosi, Hiszpanie... itd. nie mówią od nas lepiej po angielsku. Nawet Skandynawowie, którzy teoretycznie angielski znają dobrze nie są dużo dalej, może jedyny wyjątek to Holendrzy.
Polska szkoła zbyt duży nacisk kładzie na regułki zamiast na mówienie.
Zgadzam się. Obcowałem trochę z Duńczykami i faktycznie mówią świetnie po angielsku - poprawnie, bogate słownictwo, no i akcent dobry, ale to już chyba kwestia podobieństwa w wymowie ich ojczystego języka. Grający w Grze o Tron Nicolai Coster Wandau jest duńskim aktorem. Ja nie słyszę u niego obcego(nie amerykańskiego) akcentu. Może native-speakerzy słyszą, ale z drugiej strony tyle tych różnych akcentów na samych Wyspach, że czasami nie wiadomo, czy taki ktoś nie jest przypadkiem z drugiego hrabstwa, dlatego tak śmiesznie mówi ;)

+OrzelBialy616 j.angielski zaliczany jest do rodziny języków germanskich,dlatego mają łatwiej,ja obecnie uczę się niderlandzkiego i widzę mnóstwo podobienstw.
Rozmawiałem po angielsku z Hiszpanami, Brytyjczykami, Czechami, Holendrami i Niemcami. Najgorzej mi się rozmawiało z Niemcami przez to, że szybko mówili, co w połączeniu z ich akcentem powodowało, że nie potrafiłem zrozumieć większości słów. Do dziś pamiętam sytuację jak w Niemieckim Burger Kingu zostałem olany przez Niemke na kasie. Nie zrozumiałem nic z tego co mówiła mimo, że jak się potem okazało znałem wszystkie przez nią wypowiedziane słowa i ich znaczenie.
Jako Polacy nie do końca zdajemy sobie sprawę, z tego jak łatwo nam Polakom uczyć się też innych języków. W angielskim nie ma przypadków czy skomplikowanej odmiany czasowników ani rodzajów. Dlatego im jest bardzo ciężko w ogóle zrozumieć gramatykę hiszpańską czy niemiecką. Tak samo wymowa. Niemiecka czy hiszpańska jest bardziej podobna do polskiej niż do angielskiej. Tak naprawdę znając polski w trudności języka, którego się uczymy, możemy iść głównie w dół.
Z drógiej strony w polskim nie masz tego: an, a, the, la, el, los, las, i jest zacznie mniej czasów. Dodatkowo jest mniej odmian języka polskiego. W hiszpańskim masz: castellano, catalán, vasco, gallego i latinoamericano, a w angielskim inaczej mówią w Stanach, Australii, wyspach Oceanii, Angli, czy Szkocji.
Wyjdź poza języki europejskie to zobaczysz że nasza przewaga prawie znika
WSI 1990 inaczej nie inaczej, tu raczej chodzi o wymowe i gware czyli np slazacy i gorole itd.
Ale jednak i tak latwiej jest sie dogadac z angielskim w roznych regionach bo to w sumie sie i tak nie rozni za bardzo. Gorzej jakby się chcial taki slazak dogadac z kims bo tu na slasku masz pojedyncze slowka nawet z jezyka niemieckiego itd. ;)
AntyChryst Nie zgodzę się odnośnie tego, że gwary są trudniejsze do zrozumienia. Zwłaszcza w hiszpański gdzie castellano i latinoamericano są jeszcze podobne, ale pozostałe są kompletnie innymi językami niezrozumiałymi dla innych Hiszpanów nie posługujących się nimi.
WSI 1990 nie wiem jak tam to wyglada w Hiszpanii ale z angielskim nie jest tak źle ;) i jak dla mnie nie wazne czy Australijczyk Szkot czy Amerykanin kazdy sie ze sobą dogada ;) a co do gwar to śmiem twierdzić iz np polak mógłby sie łatwiej dogadac z takim czechem niżeli ze slazakiem :p
I learned Polish not through any formal teachers but just from everyday life.
Before I could speak Polish though ONE particular word/question sufficed: 'party?' - uttered with a smile!
Mixing with Poles after teaching English all day. During parties at clubs, student dorms and above all people's homes. Avoiding the English language and native speakers. Above all making friends with Poles who COULDN'T speak a word of English. That was the key!
The problem was many Poles didn't want to speak Polish with you, precisely because they wanted to learn English!
How I remember struggling with case endings and declension! The best was 'genetive'. I liked the fact that in Polish you pronounce the words as they are written. Once you learn the sounds of the Polish alphabet you can basically read anything without even understanding it! Not so in English. Think of 'thorough, silhouette' etc.
Polish tenses are much more simplified than the 16 or so English. Also no articles like 'a/an/the' to worry about.
Progress was slow and gradual. It took me 2-3 years to learn enough that I could communicate in a basic way.
Similar to how I learned Spanish. I had a baseline that I picked up from my mom, who is Mexican, but it was actually living in Mexico with no English speakers is what really helped me. Not to mention watching my favorite tv shows dubbed into Spanish. I now want to move to Poland, so I’m trying to learn Polish. I’m literally just starting, and so far the hardest part in terms of reading the language is the markings on certain letters, and how that changes the pronunciation. I don’t get it now, but hopefully soon I will.

Socash po Polsku najlepiej jakbyś miał duży zasób słów i podstawy gramatyki. Wszyscy cię zrozumieją i nie będą się śmiać, będą ci jeszcze pomagać, żeby cię zrozumieć. Tak myślę. Gramatyka nie jest najważniejsza. Najważniejszy jest jak największy zasób słów. To powtarzał mój nauczyciel języka niemieckiego w szkole podstawowej i miał rację.

The reasons Arlena speaks of I find less cultural but much much more of learning methods. I have experience first hand as a kid studying English since the age of 5, then moving abroad to an English speaking school, only to find out I have little practical knowledge of the language in conversation. I have however also experience as a Callan method English teacher, years in, and by studying with this method, I recall no issues among the students that Arlena mentioned here and I have experienced myself after coming from the "standard" teaching method. Within a month I recall students not only capable of holding a basic conversation, but also willing to converse deeper and engage into topics despite making mistakes.
Trudnością w angielskim jest to, że każde słowo inaczej się zapisuje, a inaczej wymawia i praktycznie nie ma reguł jak na przykład w niemieckim, że "ei" zawsze czytam jako "aj", a "eu" jako "oj". W angielskim na przykład raz "a" czytam jako "a" w "are", raz jako "o" w "want", a jeszcze czasem jako "e" w "can". To tak jakbym uczyła się dwóch słów, zamiast jednego. Takie 2 w 1. Często potrafię jakieś słowo rozpoznać zapisane, ale nie w wymowie, albo na odwrót.
Poza tym często w angielskim jedno słowo ma różne znaczenia i to zupełnie niezwiązane ze sobą. Na przykład "like", może znaczyć "lubię", "podoba mi się", albo "jak". Też mamy co prawda takie kwiatki, jak "może" (on może coś zrobić) i "morze" (Bałtyckie, Północne...), ale to raczej rzadsze zjawisko.
Proszę nie przesadzać z tymi trudnościami w nauce polskiego,1.Języka polskiego można się nauczyć czytać w jeden dzień,alfabet prosty,ą,ęń,ś,ć-tylko 5.2.To samo z pisaniem ze słuchu,proste i klarowne.3.Wymowa prosta i zrozumiała.4.Spróbujcie tego samego w języku angielskim-makabra.Nieraz byłem świadkiem jak anglicy, nawet po studiach ,mieli problem aby się porozumieć ponieważ słowa w angielskim brzmią podobnie ale co innego znaczą,albo piszą się różnie a wymawiają tak samo ,a jak się nie zna słowa angielskiego to nie wiadomo jak wymówić,jak się nie zna słowa to nie wiadomo jak zapisać.Mój nauczyciel angielskiego,rodowity londyńczyk, o tym mówił i podał przykład,że jechał metrem w Toronto i miał wysiąść przy Bloor,nigdy takiej nazwy nie spotkał i nie wiedział jak to wymówić,musiał się zapytać tubylców jak się to słowo wymawia{nauczyciel angielskiego z Londynu!]Dla mnie język polski jest precyzyjny,logiczny i można nim wyrazić znacznie wiecej niż w angielskim.Do tego to subtelne stopniowanie rzeczowników np.Dziewczynka,dzieweczka,dziewuszka, dziewczyneczka,dziewczyna,dziewucha itd.Język polski jest super,gdyby jeszcze uprościć ortografię. Język polski traktuje wszystkich z szacunkiem,każdy jest panem.
Miałam naprawdę mało ogarniętych nauczycieli od angielskiego. W jednym roku w gimnazjum przewinęło się przez moją klasę 7(!) różnych, dwie pierwsze "odpadły" z przyczyn ciąży oraz zdrowotnych, kolejnym po prostu umowy się kończyły (byli na zastępstwo za panią z problemami, która przez trzy miesiące zwodziła szkołę, że już wraca, po czym przedłużali jej zwolnienie - podczas gdy nauczyciele z zastępstwa zdążali przenieść się do innej pracy, bo w końcu miała wrócić...). W liceum na profilu z angielskim rozszerzonym nauczycielka więcej do nas mówiła po polsku jak po angielsku, co chwilę komuś przerywała jak już mieliśmy nawiązać jakiś dialog - nawet nie by poprawić błędy, a dokończyć wypowiedź za daną osobę (nie dawała się zastanowić, kiedy człowiek i po polsku musiałby pomyśleć). Z osobowości - złota kobieta, szkoda że bez ręki do nauki. Później rok zabawiłam na językoznawstwie na UAMie z angielskim jako jednym z języków kierunkowych - jedna wykładowczyni kontynuowała tradycję mówienia po polsku, co więcej - nieraz sprawdzała słownictwo i zagwozdki gramatyczne w internecie... Później zaczęłam grać online, poznałam wiele bliskich mi dziś anglojęzycznych osób, w tym mojego partnera. Na początku unikałam jak ognia wchodzenia na czat głosowy, wolałam wszystko załatwiać słowem pisanym. Przed pierwszym spotkaniem w 'realu' z partnerem rozmawiałam głosowo tylko raz - w ciągu pół roku znajomości. Teraz dzwonimy codziennie, opory zniknęły, jak nie znam danego słówka to nie panikuję, tylko zaczynam opisywać, o co mi chodzi. Jak normalny człowiek. :P Praktyka czyni mistrza! Nauczyciele, zrozumcie!
Hello, according to Polish genders. Femininum ends also with - ść like umiejętność, sposobność, unikalność and so on. Neuter not only has those endings, but also - um, like liceum, muzeum.
That is true. Also each noun ending with -o is also neuter. For example: (to) dziecko, (to) biurko, (to) krzesło, (to) żelazko, (to) rzemiosło, (to) krzęsiwo.
True, it has even more endings like -ż, -rz, -ń, -sz, -cz, -ć (mysz, straż, dłoń, twarz, rzecz, rtęć), maybe some more. There are so many they are more than just "exceptions"...
Hi Ryan, all what you've presented in this vid how hard is for ppl. from non Slovanian ethic groups to learn Polish is bloody truth! 🤗 But for me, living 30 years in Australia 🇦🇺🌴🐨 it was very hard as well to learn English. In Polish, we don't need to know spelling, cause we read as we write. When learning English in Poland 🇵🇱💒🌲🌳🌻, I was taugh a school English by my aunt the English teacher. After arriving here, I faced straight away the 'Aussie's' slang, that I had difficulties to bloody understand! 🙄😩😱 Also, my very 1st experience was when driving car on left here, as English do, I of course tried to drive Polish way, nearly ending with a head on collision! 😟😱 Also, while in the traffics, I thought that sign saying exemple: 'Turn left with care at anytime', I read: 'To turn left my c a r with care at a n y t i m e hey! Gross! And for a while I just did that. Lucky that I wasn't swooped by another car driving straight?!🙄😏 Also, a simple Aussie's slang saying: 'Good on ya!'. For a long while I was confused why ppl. Would say 'good onion'?!🤔 That was fully explained to me later with a laughter!🤣😁Many strange things can happen when learning English. But...Polish is the hardest language to learn in the world.🌍🌎🌏 I highly agree with that. At all schools though, I was the best student in Polish hey! 🤗 No grammar mistakes, lack of punctation, etc. Now, I am proud of being Polish 🇵🇱 💒🌳🌲🐞🌻🌹/Aussie 🇦🇺🐨🌴🐊🐍🦈🐢 'vintage' lady 🤗👵, and being up front with today's technology. I watch lots of videos on TH-cam, (the 'fair dinkum- one'!🤗😉😎) And I will be watching more of your's about my Polska 🇵🇱... And dreaming of visiting all of those beautiful places, that is for sure. I am Russian, I studied Polish in the University, the grammar was not hard at all, the most difficult part was pronunciation. We also have hissing consonants in Russian but Polish is another level.
I like nasal vowels in Polish they sound so cool.
By the way I was surprised that I understood everything that Polish ladies said in this video perhaps it is explained by the fact that my topic of study was philology.

Wszystko fajnie, ale w 2:10 słowa "robiłyśmy" i "robiliśmy" są źle akcentowane. Akcent pada na 2 sylabę od końca (robi'liśmy), a powinien być na 3 sylabie od końca (ro'biliśmy), ponieważ te słowa to wyjątki. Podobnie jest ze słowem "robilibyśmy" tu akcent pada na 4 sylabę od końca czyli znów na sylabę "bi" 😊😊
I am lucky my mother would point out the Polish words of the mass & hymns of our Polish church, when I was little, because it is has been much easier to pronounce them than others can, including my sister, though for the most part, I don't know what I am saying. My mom would only speak Polish to my grandmother when she didn't want us to know what was being said. I did have some lessons, but wasn't able to continue them.

Polish has irregular grammar, but English has irregular pronunciation. Virtually every word in English you have to learn the spelling and pronunciation separately. Both languages have their difficulty.
I was shocked to learn that the Poles don't learn spelling, especially when one sees their words spelled. In English if you can't see the words in your head, there is no way one can spell or write the language correctly.

ButterOnSandwich -- bardzo się mylisz. W słowie „skuwka” nie ma żadnej nieregularności, bo wywodzi się od słów „kuć”, „wykuwać”, które się pisze przez „u”.

@@bos1218 - okropnie błądzisz. „Ów” się kreskuje tylko w wypadku, gdy jest to gramatycznie uzasadnione, a tutaj nie ma tego uzasadnienia. Na chłopski rozum słowo „skuwać” wywodzi się od „kuć”, w którego rdzeniu występuje litera „u”, dlatego „skuwka”, „skuwać” pisze się przez „u”. Przecie uczono tego w szkole !
I was born and raised in Poland gdynia but then we moved out when I was about 4 or 5... now I'm forgetting most of my polish language and I'm trying my best to study it and learn it again. It sure is very difficult.

Well, in my opinion in polish as Paulina said the most difficult are ends of words. The most problematic could be choose correct form. Not clear also can be future. For example you can say ''Będę' robił' (I'll be doing) or ''Będę robić'' (It means the same, but the second one is expressed with infinitive).
Są też osoby które poprostu nie mają w ogóle głowy do języków obcych, dlatego się jednak cieszę że pod spodem jest tłumaczenie, próbowałem wielu metod, ale sądzę że musiałbym wyjechać za granicę aby jakoś zacząć uczy się obcego.
Polish is really difficult, even for Polish people, because it has a lot of ridiculous grammar, and as you said, more exceptions than actual rules. From my experience I can say that Poles also get frustrated easily and that's why they usually don't give a shit about a big part of our grammar, making it quite easier in real life. Of course, we know much instinctively from growing up in Poland and learning the language from childhood, but when we go to school and learn rules, a lot of people gets demotivated. That situation is leaving only a small group of linguists caring about proper Polish language. For me, my friends and the majority of people that I know, it is insane.
Jak to jest możliwe ze posługuje się najtrudniejszym językiem świata i nadal nie umiem posługiwać się angielskim którego się uczę od jakiś 10 lat xDD

Polish is very similar to those of other slavic languages. It is not much easier to learn Russian, Ukranian or Czech. Though the fact that Poles use latin alphabet instead of cyryllic makes it harder to read and distinguish words. The only thing that makes Polish more complex is that it has more conjugations in Past Tense that other slavic languages.
Despite its difficulty Polish still has one thing that makes it much easier to learn and use - writting. It`s the same idea as in all slavic languages, you can read and immidiately pronounce a word even if you are not fimiliar with it. You write as you pronounce - the golden rule of slavs.

I think many slavic languages have this kind of grammar. In Russian this is called 'padeji' and in Ukrainian it's 'vidminki''.

Polish language is a great tester to check whether you are Polish or not. I knew one Ukrainian girl who has spent her entire life, except early childhood, in Poland and I could still trace a slight eastern accent in her speech. Due to difficult grammar it is also easy to spot a Russian or Ukrainian troll on the internet writing comments in Polish :-P

To make mistakes while speaking and to have an accent are two different things. To speak fluently means to speak grammatically, lexically and phonetically correct. But articulation of individuals always differs, and it does not affect on the fluency.

you would be surprised how often those comments pop up when discussing important strategical subjects such as North Stream II, energy or military subjects. Russians have even an office called by media "russian troll factory" in St. Petersburg where "professional" trolls work and get paid for writing comments. Useless Walkthroughs Feel sorry for bilingual Poles, literally learning both Polish and English(or other) from birth until fluent in both. In some places in America where the Polish population is high we even have people setting up Polish schools that you send your kids to on Saturdays. I've been going since 1st grade and I just graduated last year after which they recommended me to take the NYU exam for Polish language to get actual credits from out knowledge of the Polish language. All of this at sophomore year in High School and you have to be fluent to even take the test. And this isn't something I just did, most Polish kids in my area do this.

As a Pole living in Norway, and currently mastering Norwegian language, I can easily say that Poles has unique ability to learn different languages very fast and efficiently. Most likely because of how hard our language is, and our ability to mimic sounds. Based on that, there is no problem with learning words, and mimicking accents from other countries, that could be a challenge for an English speaker.

Nie Norweski tylko Szwedzki. I poza tym dalej jestem w szkole i to nie jest tak że sobie pracowałem z Polakami tylko w normalnej szkole 8 godzin nauki. W tym z 2 ponad było czystej nauki języka sam na sam z nauczycielem.
Kochany Keku - to jak szybko ktoś nauczy się języka zależy tylko i wyłącznie od niego. Nie muszę Ci się tłumaczyć, ale wiedz, że mieszkam w Norwegii od 8 lat a nawet tutaj studiuje, więc wydaje mi się że na ten moment potrafię język nie tylko na poziomie KOMUNIKATYWNYM. Uważam ten język za jeden z najprostszych jakie poznałem, głównie dlatego że jest to język rybaków i farmerów gdyż w Norwegii nie było normalnego średniowiecza gdzie język mógłby się rozwijać w sposób bardziej wyrafinowany jak np. wśród Polskiej Szlachty. Składność w zdaniach jest śmiesznie łatwa, tak samo jak odmiany które ograniczają się do en, a, et. Jedyna trudność jaka jest to przedimki które niestety trzeba wykłóć na blachę. Języka przy dobrych wiatrach KOMUNIKATYWNIE można się nauczyć już nawet w ten jeden rok. Innymi słowy - jak ja mam nie chwalić Polaków, tak ty puknij się w głowę i nie generalizuj

To be honest, I become really grateful when I meet someone who's interested in the Polish language, considering it's simply a country in Europe that other countries aren't particularly familiar with, so teaching another person who's fascinated and interested in the culture and language, I feel honoured. :)
Seriously, Polish names and surnames are probably the most butchered especially by folks speaking western languages. Average English speaking person will have little problem (assuming a little good will) pronouncing most Russian, Czech. Slovak even Lithuanian or Romanian names, but when it comes to Polish they're not even trying.
Perfecting following sounds: cz, sz, ch, ż, rz, ą, ę, and a couple more will make you sound like an expert compared to 99% of people even if thats all the polish you know and its easier then you think.

ż/rz = [french] (j)e t'aime - everyone knows the sound
Endek pronouncing ł in words like Łódź correctly would also be a big step forward.

Yea, for example we often talk about how english pronunciation is hard and illogical, but we have sth like that in Polish too sometimes - in some words you read 'rz' like 'ż' but in others like 'sz'. And nouns aren't it but it or she or he etc. with a lot of illogical exceptions - man is she.

As a Finn I actually find the grammar very logical (I think most non-Latin/Germanic-based languages have similar features in Europe), but the pronunciation makes everything much more complicated. Even compared to Russian there are way more exceptional rules and some vowels that have disappeared from every other Slavic language. I usually end up pronouncing Polish like Russian or Ukrainian and people in Poland often say my accent is what the Poles in their former Eastern territories used to have :)

There are exceptions like 'rz' - in some words you read it like 'ż' in others like 'sz', but bigger problem for non native speakers is probably how to prononce ż, ź, ć, dz, etc., just like we have difficulty with 'th' sound in English.

Let's cool it a bit with how difficult Polish is. I was able to speak it fluently, with a decent vocabulary, by the age of four. So you see, even a child can master it, and very quickly, too. : ) Also - the "impossible" Polish grammar is actually based very closely on the Latin grammar. A year or two ago I heard an interview on Polskie Rradio with an English poet (a true, Anglo-Saxon Englishman) with an interest in Polish poetry, in Polish. I was astonished how good his Polish was - with an almost perfect pronounciation, and a tremendous vocabulary. When I went to college in Warsaw in the late 70s, there were foreign students from the US, France, Finland, etc. (not many, but some) studying in Warsaw,. All of them learned to speak Polish very well indeed, just with a faint trace of a foreign accent.
