same, rigth when i heard her name I remembered all over again. my family were fans of her on the voice, and i still remember when my dad told me what happened. Didn't believe him at first.
Yeah, me too. She was such a sweet girl and didn’t deserve that. There are people on this planet that are so out of their minds. Where they think murder is the only solution.
Don't worry I told her on her first comment on her first video that she's going to die in 5 years and to not go to the concert and sign autographs so she will not die :)
“At first they were going to just cut off each end of the drillbit, but then they realized the rest of the bit would still be in his head.” … they must have put a think tank together for this solution.

Same. Someone wasn't done with him yet. On the, taie a picture end of it, and the laughing and joking, I'm the same way. Actually asked the ER staff about keeping the bullet they pulled out of my leg. 20 years later, I was a few hours out of surgery, above knee amputation, looking up funny amputee t shirts. Oh the minute he said Christina’s name my heart dropped as I’ve known this story very well from when happened. I was heartbroken when it happened, I had been a huge fan of hers many years before she was on The Voice. I still have her music on my phone and my heart still aches for her. She was a gem for so many reasons and I remember being in shock and numb when this happened.
That young lady was a bright star of pure goodness in this world. I don't even like pop, but her voice was angelic and her personality was infectious. Christina Grimmie is one of the very few celebrity deaths that actually made me feel something. I remember crying when it came over the news. If there's a Hell, Kevin's rotting in it.
I started crying as soon as he said her name. My son loved her music and he was absolutely heartbroken when she was killed. He was 13 when it happened.
I love how Mr. Ballen spoke about youtubers as if he's not literally one of the best out there but you would never know it by talking to him. Just so humble and absolutely awesome! Definitely one of my favorite parts of the week!
The "Uber" story hits so close to home because when I was younger I ordered a taxi and someone had tuned into the cab office radio and got my details, when he pulled up and said my name I felt ok but my gut was screaming something isn't right, thankfully I noticed he didn't have the stickers/badges required by cab drivers and declined the ride, saying sorry I've changed my mind, he became aggressive and got out of the car but I was one heck of a runner in my teens so was able to get away and call police. Please be careful about who you're getting into a car with, even if you have booked the Uber, check the license plate, ask him to clarify the details of the pick up and just do all you can to check authenticity of your ride! Stay safe ❤️
That's true English. I make sure to look at make and model of expected uber car and I also walk in front of car and match the license plates to what's in my phone. And I still be paranoid sometimes. Too much going on.
Check the door too! Make sure the child safety lock is not on before you get in, especially if you ride in the back seat. Because just because everything matches doesn’t mean that person doesn’t have horrible intentions… especially after listening to this Chanel 😅
I feel worse for Christina's brother, She's resting peacefully but her brother has the hardest job a brother can do, and that's staying alive even after seeing everything that happened first hand and tackled the man who killed his very own sister. I can't imagine the pain and most likely the constant flashbacks of that moment. Hope he's okay and keeps his strength to carry on.
Sick people is why we need our 2nd amendment especially with a open border. If u ain't got a gun good luck making it in the coming future. Let's go Brandon. FJB. CHRISTINA🙏
@@ryanwaddell6278 What does this have to do with anything? They both would've died anyway, regardless of 2nd amendment. Crazy people are unpredictable in every way.
I can only imagine how guilty her family feels urging her to make her youtube channel. It is not their fault, but that is the one moment that changed it all for her.
The sad thing is Samantha’s boyfriend was in touch with her the ENTIRE night including the ride home. For her own safety while she was in what she thought was her Uber, she was constantly sharing her location with him. He became alarmed as soon as he saw the Uber driving away from her home. He tried calling then the phone was shut off. He was the one calling her friends. And the one who got the investigation started! So tragic
@@AlliBaucum No, he kept her phone and tried to sell it at Cellular City, but the guy wouldn’t buy it. Later on, the killer’s girl friend saw it in his car, he told her to mind her own business. When they caught him, he was still in possession of her iPhone.
What I don’t understand is how the Uber driver knew how to get to her home and how Samantha didn’t almost immediately realize she was in the wrong car. First of all, she wouldn’t have seen his gps up, second his photo wouldn’t have matched the apps photo, unless it looked similar…. I would’ve banged on the windows and doors immediately pleading for attention and help. Maybe she was too impaired or tired. I just don’t get this
One of the other sad things about Samantha's case is that her boyfriend, (might have been her fiancee, even), had been trying to find her when she left the bar, too. So he was actually watching in real time on his Find My Friends app as her murderer drove her further and further away, until the signal dropped. He was completely devastated. This caused Uber to change their security policies, although it took them awhile. That's why you now see lit Uber and Lyft signs in the car windows, driver photos, names, car photos, and license plate numbers on the app itself.
@@celestehalford2571 I was hoping someone had a comment about that in regards to a motive. I was floored with his popularity on FB. WOW 12K comments on that odd post! 🤔
Even 7 years later, I had a really hard time listing to you narrate Christina Grimmie's story. Her death was so senseless and so shocking, my heart broke so badly. I remember sobbing in my husband's arms when I first heard the news. She was such a beautiful person; body, heart and soul and she deserved so much better than such a horrible end. I pray she at least didn't have time to suffer from her injuries. RIP Christina
@@indianfan1029 he shot himself after Christina's brother tackled him. He was able to get up step away and shoot himself with a second gun he had. I second that, been following Christina since 2011 and loved her personality, golden heart & voice ever since… don’t think I will ever get over her ridiculously preventable and untimely death. My heart goes to you, so many of us will never forget her. \|/
For the first story, all I could think was “Thank God for doctors” how can you literally unscrew a drill bit from someone’s head and not barf or pass out? Takes a special kind of person
Idk man there are a bunch out there who just don’t get fazed. I’d say ppl who watch doctor shows at young ages and are exposed to that stuff young are more likely to be able to do things like tahy
My brother is an ER physician and he can deal with all the blood and gore from accidents but he says he always feels disturbed when dealing with injuries that people inflict on others, like when someone comes in stabbed or shot multiple times. It just bothers him that someone can do that to someone else. Also, when he sees injuries inflicted on children-that bothers him. He can't show it, of course, but it's hard.
When you become famous you never know how your life will be. It's so uncertain when someone puts themselves out there!! So sad we have the obsessed who ruin lives!!
I NEVER find the "secret in todays episode" because I'm too damned engrossed in what MrBallen has to say and the stories he brings us. Thank you so much x
MrBallen getting sponsored by a security system is literally like when ASMR people get sponsored by headphones... it just fits exactly right lol the amount of times I've checked locks and windows in my house since discovering this channel has increased by a factor of 20.
Probably exactly why they did it. What better way to advertise your security system than having an ex-SEAL telling you true crime stories, with a ton of them being home invasions.
Me too. I use chairs up against door handles. I watched a 2 hour long video for first responders (or thieves) can really easily get in without breaking anything. 5 years ago I KNOW someone got in from porch. I was out in common area or garage. I was locked out of my own apartment. The door frame has chunks of wood/paint gone. Being a single female 1st floor yikes.
R.I.P Christina Grimmie and Mama Grimmie. Her mom passed away a couple years later from cancer. Christina was very talented and beautiful. Her dad and brother are really doing a good job keeping her memory alive. Definitely taken to soon.
I think the most fearful part of Samantha’s story is that she probably at some point got a notification that her Uber was waiting for her or something along those lines while she was in the backseat of what she thought WAS her Uber driver. The panic that ensues would likely be nauseating to say the least… RIP
Ron's case was a miracle, imagine if he fell a tiny inch to the side and he wouldn't be with us today. Thank the doctors who had to deal with unscrewing a drill from a guy's head while he's cracking jokes.
I go to USC and Samantha died right before I was starting as a freshmen. Everyone knows Five Points is the most dangerous place in Columbia, and you NEVER go alone and NEVER leave alone… she was a huge wake up call for people who became complacent. Later I found out the killer had been taught by one of my high school teachers (different school), and that he dumped her body eerily close to my hometown. Absolutely tragic.
Grew up there and graduated from USC. I was at USC when Dail Dinwiddie disappeared from Five Points. She's never been found, and 25 or so years later, her case is still under investigation. There is so much to that story...psychics were brought in, etc. A few months after her disappearance, I went for a job interview, and the guy interviewing me randomly started asking me what I thought happened to Dail Dinwiddie. I got spooked by his demeanor and questions and just left. I still wonder to this day if he knew more than he was saying, and if that's why he was wanting to know if I knew her and stuff. Never saw him or his company again. Super creepy. If you gotta visit Five Points, go with a group and leave with a group! ✌️❤💪🙏😁
I was born and raised there. You just told a lie for attention. The vista and 5 points (both near USC) are the safest in Columbia for night life. It’s very sad what happen to these two ladies, but people everywhere have to be careful while out on the town drinking because you’re intoxicated. These are isolated incidents and decades between.
Adam Levine actually ended up paying for Christina's funeral, and a lot of celebrity singers were so deeply saddened by the loss of her and her wonderful talents. She will forever remain one of the greatest performers to ever appear on that show. ❤

Christina Grimmie's death was one of the saddest passings because she was so loved by her audience. Everyone adored her and everyone knew she was going to be a huge star one day (more than she already was) and her relationship with her mother throughout the show made it even more sad.
And to think she was going to hug a friend.. she didn’t blow him off, she wasn’t unkind. She was going to hug him which is what he indicated he wanted.. then he murdered her in front of her family and fans. When I first heard I couldn’t even believe that was true. Like I was so devastated. She was reaching her dreams and a “fan” took that from her..
Christina was a year above me and we went to the same high school until she moved. We had mutual friends and we had the same history teacher. He always told her that if she made it big, he would be her tour bus driver. When she was on the voice finale, all of us watched it in our performance art center in school. The night she died was a huge shock to our community.
Both murders are horrific but I can only imagine how Samantha felt that whole ride😭😭! I’ve fallen asleep in Ubers coming back from the club 😬 (granted I had a bestie in the car too) but I totally get letting your guard down cause it becomes routine. I always check the license plate, look at their photo, make sure there’s no other passengers in the car, and make them tell me their name/mine. I’ll refuse the ride and report them if they check off any of these red flags. I’m still paranoid tho so I always keep my keys between my fingers and sometimes my taser hid btw my thighs just to be safe 😢. Why is the world like this 🤦🏽♀️😖...
@shawnayjamison8788 Yes, the world is full of angry, hopeless people just waiting. My mom hates for me to even go to the grocery store alone, and of course, I carry the prerequisite stunner also. Gone are the days when we would be told go outside and play and be home for dinner.
The third story, Samantha’s boyfriend/fiancé had an app that actually tracked loved ones, this was so he could make sure that she was on her way home, he even stayed on the phone with her while she waited for her Uber. When she got in the Uber Samantha hung up and he watched the tracker going in the opposite direction of her home. Just let that sink in, watching this loved one kidnapped in real time. That just chills me.
I also heard this story before. I first thought it was another similar story MrBallen told us, but I now remember it was from a Coffeehouse Crime video.
I dont understand, If he watched that happen in real time, why did it take everyone til the next day to realize she never made it home? And why would he not take immediate action, doesnt add up = /
As soon as you mentioned Christina Grimmie, my heart sank and I whispered “nooo”. When she died, it felt like part of my innocence died because we were both about the same age. I sadly only heard her music after she passed and it got me through a very dark time in my life. I only wish that I could thank her for helping me

Christina Grimmie still makes me sad. She’s the first artist who made me discover covers in TH-cam when she sang Just a Dream with Sam. A friend of mine showed me the cover during lunch time in our university cafeteria. I can still remember that day because I watched so many of her videos afterwards. I miss her. This still makes me really really sad.
I came here to comment the same thing... She was a treasure and left such a huge impact on the community. Her death really changed Orlando and I still hear people mention her every year. For anyone that doesn’t know this, UBER drivers have a UBER STICKER on their vehicle. If you don’t see that sticker and or are unsure, do not enter any vehicle. Contact Uber and get clarification.
When you order an Uber in the app, the app will first show you a picture of the driver's face and a detailed description of the car. How in the world did he accomplish that? The app also shows you a real time map with a car emoji moving towards you with a countdown of time to zero minutes; this way you can see how far he was starting and how long it will take him to reach you. I've Uber so many times and that's how it works. Forget the stupid sticker.
@@dunhill1 A lot of people don't pay that much attention to this stuff, or at least don't always. Samantha was just the unlucky one. :( Hopefully her story will at least continue to raise awareness for other rideshare users.
@@hapabear You very well may be correct and if 100% true, that is very sad because it means that this horrific murder was easily avoidable if a) she was not so drunk or b) complete disregard to the app & it's info that it shares with riders. I feel like it’s so underrated that in brain surgery it’s not unheard of to keep the patient awake but given painkillers. There are examples of musicians playing their instruments during surgery bc it’s so central to their way of life (for professional musicians)
Yea patients are kept awake during brain surgery to ensure there is no loss of motor skills, sensory perception or movement in extremities. The slightest wrong move or cut can have devastating consequences. When I was a nursing student many years ago my fellow clinical students and I were able to watch a Brain surgery be performed. It was so interesting watching the surgeon performing while the patient was awake and responding. The surgery took over 4 hours. Depends on what they have to do and what area of the brain is involved.
My mother in law was left completely awake during a brain surgery to remove a tumor. They were talking to her the entire 8 hr surgery. It's incredible what is possible nowadays!
I would bet that the song they are playing in the background in the operating room is the song they are playing or singing so they can note if something is wrong. Depends on the brain injury. My doctor has told me when I have to go through it my normal bitchy way because if I start saying nice things they know something is terribly wrong.
I went to the University of South Carolina when the last story happened. 2 things that make it even more chilling. First, Samanthas boyfriend was tracking her location watching her drive in the wrong direction until her phone was shut off/died. The second detail is Rowland was arrested down the street from where he picked Samantha up, presumably trying to commit another murder
Regarding that last story, it’s always been terrifying to me that there are utter psychopaths out there who are able to commit such unspeakable acts of violence upon another person (an innocent one, at that), yet remain completely unaffected...even going so far as to interact with the people around him, but with no discernible signs that anything was different.
Yeah, and that all they need is an opportunity. No need for motive. Imagine the surprise of his friends and family, knowing at some point in their lives, they were all alone with a killer and could’ve been the victim.
I heard about this story from another crime channel. I guess if there's anything to take from it, it's to confirm the driver's name and car matches in the uber app before you get in. I always do that anyway but it just reenforces the idea in my head. Also, if one of her friends had gone with her, maybe this wouldn't have happened. These cowards are always looking for an easy victim. He had actually lapped around that nightclub several times before picking her up.
The story with Christina is heartbreaking. She was from my hometown in Marlton NJ. Everyone was so excited when she got onto the voice. We ended up going to the vigil after she passed. Its hard seeing someone so young die so violently.

Honestly to me that x ray looks fake. The whole first story seems a little made up. And why would they have to twist the drill bit out of his head? It didn't drill itself into his head. Falling straight on it would just make a hole right through. I don't know, but it was still a great story by Mr. Ballen.
Former part-time Uber driver here. I cannot tell you how many times that I had drunk people accidentally get into my car (or attempt to) that weren’t my pickups. This included drunk college girls and 20-somethings traveling alone or in pairs. Fortunately for them, I wasn’t a complete psychopath. But these girls got into a stranger’s car without even verifying my photo or the make/model of my car. This is mind-bogglingly stupid. PLEASE verify your driver’s identity and that the vehicle matches that of your Uber or Lyft BEFORE you get into their car. Furthermore, don’t get so shitfaced at the bar that you can’t even recognize a potentially dangerous situation. If you want to get that drunk, please do that in the relative safety of your own home or that of a trusted friend.

I was thinking this same thing during the story. That a child lock should still be able to be overridden by an adult somehow on the inside, hell most trunks if not all newer ones have a way to get out if you're stuck...your analogy of a medication bottle is about right.
Well, let's put it this way. Cop cars don't use child locks- they achieve a similar result by either disconnecting the interior door handle from the hardware that disengages the latch, or simply removes said hardware - essentially a rod that connects the latch to the handle. Hell, for all I know - especially considering how simplified these stories tend to be, that the murderer was actually driving a retired cop car, with such a modification in place, and wasn't even using the child lock.
@@xcasino A lot of cars in Europe and the UK have that feature. My own Renault Megane estate (Station wagon) has a four way control in the door to operate all four door windows and in addition has a child lock switch which shuts off the rear power windows and door release mechanisms, disabling them electrically via a switch on that same switch pack.
I can't even begin to fathom the pain that man caused Christina's whole family but especially her brother. He will "what if" himself to death if he isn't careful. I hope with all my hope that he was able to find some peace. He does not deserve that pain.

I only found out about Christina Grimmie from this episode. I’m subscribed to her channels on here, and then (from my standpoint) she just stopped uploading and I thought she had just gotten bored or moved on or something else… It’s so sad to hear about what actually happened to her
So sad, my wife followed Christina Grimmie for years before her death, and she brings it up every so often (same age, and she inspired my wife's singing). Bums me TF out to think about. It's one of a very few of all these stories that really hits deeper than a story for me.
The story of Samantha was heartbreaking. It's her death that made Uber change some of their policies..more notably, the reason an Uber driver now has to have a sign stating they are an Uber(or Lyft) driver.
Me and my friends almost got kidnapped the same way, it just pulled up next to us and we almost got in before my friend called to confirm. Before the uber driver picked up, he suddenly sped off

@@Hiphop618 I think anyone who has used Uber for a long time has at some point hopped into a car without checking the license plate...and she was tired and probably buzzed at the time. Murder is always the responsibility of the person committing it not the victim.
@@KichiZone The murderer is guilty, yes, but the young woman is dead. Whether she was in the right or wrong in the situation doesn't make her less dead, and it's probably best not to depend on the morals of the murderer to tell him not to murder. Thus, we have safety tips to try and help us avoid murderers. It's not saying she committed some sort of crime. It's saying, "Here's how to check if someone is trying to commit a crime against you so that you can protect yourself before it happens."
The shocking truth that some people feel they can remove another person from this life just because of whatever mood may have struck them is just horrifying. I hope the families of these women have all of the support they need. Conversely I am amazed that that HUGE drill didn't kill the man instantly. Talk about being blessed by fate.

Check the door too! Make sure the child safety lock is not on before you get in, especially if you ride in the back seat. Because just because everything matches doesn’t mean that person doesn’t have horrible intentions… especially after listening to this Chanel 😅

So tragic

No, he kept her phone and tried to sell it at Cellular City, but the guy wouldn’t buy it.

For anyone that doesn’t know this, UBER drivers have a UBER STICKER on their vehicle. If you don’t see that sticker and or are unsure, do not enter any vehicle. Contact Uber and get clarification.
stickers are easy to make
When you order an Uber in the app, the app will first show you a picture of the driver's face and a detailed description of the car.
Depends on what they have to do and what area of the brain is involved.
only on rare occasions is the patient left conscious
The second detail is Rowland was arrested down the street from where he picked Samantha up, presumably trying to commit another murder

i feel like car doors should have a way to override the “child lock” that a child couldn’t figure out similar to a pill bottle cap.
I mean its basically the same as why trunk releases were put into cars so totally should be a thing.
Good idea!
@@xcasino
A lot of cars in Europe and the UK have that feature. My own Renault Megane estate (Station wagon) has a four way control in the door to operate all four door windows and in addition has a child lock switch which shuts off the rear power windows and door release mechanisms, disabling them electrically via a switch on that same switch pack.

Broke my heart. 😭 So weird that @MrBallen covered both of these stories in the same episode! Thank you, John for doing both stories justice. ❤
