I’ve heard so many stories about people who were stupid and didn’t follow park rules and ended either injured or killed by the hot water or by being attacked by a bison. It’s so insanely common to hear reports of people being attacked by bison that Yellowstone even sells shirts that say “Do not pet the fluffy cows”

Meh, yes they should've stayed on trail, but very few people realize that there's thermal streams in Yellowstone that look like normal streams. Everyone knows about the springs but very few know about the dangers of the streams. Therefore, if there are warning signs by the springs, why aren't there warning signs by the streams??? Its also not that far from the parking lot. Its not like they fell into a hot stream 2 miles into the wilderness. Anyone could walk 50 feet from the parking lot, see a neat, normal looking stream, touch it and get severe burns because they have no way of knowing how hot it is. They absolutely had a case and its insane that the courts threw it out.

I'm honestly kind of glad the courts didn't rule against the parks on the last case. As tragic as Sarah's passing is, it's not the parks fault that Tyler, Sarah & Lance made the decision to go off trail. They were told beforehand that they needed to always remain on trail, so it isn't like they didn't know the rules.
Just because her family was hurt and angered by her tragic passing, does not mean they were right to sue the people that made sure those 3 KNEW the rules.

I worked at Yellowstone one year.
The two things that I remember from our employee training was DON'T LEAVE THE TRAILS and the bear training. Which was basically: to avoid bears be noisy and if you see one give it a wide berth, walking away slowly. If it's confrontational, don't play dead. Instead spread your arms trying to look big and yell at it. They like easy prey.
Those were the two things really stressed to us by the park rangers and a couple people actually got fired when they were caught off trail.

I grew up near Yellowstone. If you spend any time at the park, you know you don’t wander off trail unless you’re in the northeast backcountry with a guide. The main thermal areas just aren’t safe off the boardwalks. The crust is sometimes very thin around hot pools and it is really easy to fall through into scalding water.
You can actually gauge a pool or spring’s temperature by the different colored algae (different colors live at different temperatures) but you wouldn’t see that at night.

The last story reminds me of the story of these two siblings, where one of them wanted to make a video about bathing in a hot spring in Yellowstone. Apparently the younger sibling filmed how their sibling wanted to test how hot the water was, and the soil gave away under them, so they boiled to death and simultaneously dissolved in the acidic water. The body couldn't even be recovered some hours later because it was already dissolved. Please stay on the trails and don't bathe in anything unknown, guys.

@L-UltraInstinct only one sibling fell into the water. The other one filmed the entire thing, but the footage was never released as it would've been inhumane and traumatizing to do so. I didn't remember the genders of the siblings, so I used "they" to describe what happened. (I read my original comment just now and got confused by it as well. I just googled it and it was a boy and a girl. The boy was the one who died, and the sister didn't fall in.)

I saw a neighbour's cow killed by a tightening loop several months ago, it was stuck in the creek so someone put a loop around it's neck then pulled the cow but the cow wouldn't come, but in the process of pulling the rope the loop tightened around her neck and the cow ended up suffocating then sinking under the water. It was very sad to watch. I'm guessing the lassos cattlemen use are not tightening.

The worst method of death I’ve seen on video was a Chinese industrial worker who got snagged and wrapped up into a high speed gigantic steel wire spool 🧵 absolutely strangling him, but that was just to start, as it continued spinning it slammed his head into the concrete with fatal blow force, again and again with each revolution and his coworkers were unable to stop it because the poor man’s torso bashed the control panel with every revolution. It left blood spatter like the back of your shirt when you ride a bike in the dirt, except about 15 feet long on the floor. It was like the ultimate medieval torture execution device.
NEVER EVER EVER fail to take any type of rotating machines - not even a power drill or a gokart, seriously. I saw a poor young woman whose long hair got snagged in the rear axle of a go kart and it COMPLETELY tore off her scalp with all her hair still attached and wrapped it around the rear axle while she remained seated. One of the most ghastly photos I’ve seen.
Yet still almost tame compared to perhaps the worst death scene I’ve ever found photos of: a machinist who’s clothing or hair got snagged and pulled him into the lathe and wrapped him tightly around it. The scene did not even look like a human. It looked more like sausage links at a butchers shop. 🤢🤢🤢🤮 Except for the telltale clothing and hair.
I will NEVER allow anyone to take risks with rotating machinery while I am present. Doesn’t matter if it’s a friend or a stranger, trust me I won’t be able to hold back my urge to intervene even if I wanted to.

Even if there was a sign, they probably wouldn’t have seen it because it was dark anyway. That Yellowstone story reminded me of one that a Ranger told my family when we visited the hot springs. Apparently in the 90s there was a guy with his dog and this dog loved to swim. It jumped into the hot spring and the guy, not thinking, jumped in after because he knew it shouldn't be in there. The dog never came back up but he did, once. At which point his friend tried to help him out by grabbing his hand but his skin came off like a glove in the friends hand and he went under the water again. It was then impressed upon us that 1) do not touch water in Yellowstone unless it's clearly marked as safe. 2) NEVER walk off trail in thermal areas as the ground is fragile and you could fall through it into hidden springs.
