I love Ghost, came out of nowhere with a completely different vibe than most other bands in the metal genre and took the world by storm. Good music will get people listening no matter what the subject matter and imagery.
I’ve seen Ghost 4 times total...and each time has been incredible. Saw them at a small theater in Lawrence, Kansas...then saw them at a bigger theater in Kansas City, then OPENING for Iron Fucking Maiden in KC, and finally at the Midland Theater for A Pale Tour Named Death. They’re amazing, and you HAVE to go see them if and when they come close to you. The concerts are so much fun!
I saw them in 2018 in ATL at the Battery and let me tell y'all something, I've seen a ton of shows, and Ghost is one of the best live shows I've ever seen. It is a Spectacle!
Agreed! Rain was literally my inspiration to finally bite the bit and buy my first electric bass. Can't say I sound that good but practice makes perfect I suppose 😅
Lyrically, the song is about the Black Plague - a theme across the entire Prequelle album - specifically about how people would literally dance and party until they died to cope with the illness.
Europe was in this turmoil in the late 1340s. The plague is extremely fast. It starts off as the worst flu you've ever had and then it just goes worse and then you're dead after three days. So people were lying in the streets - corpses and all the surroundings were just falling apart. All the brothels and pubs were thriving because people started partying literally like there was no tomorrow because they were gonna die. They were just going for it. "Dance Macabre" is capturing that joyous nocturnal sort of life in a disco song
@@Hollywood6IX Seen them twice in Austin and once in San Antonio. First time was a small venue. The musicianship was on point. No screwups. Tobias live is funny. Always talking about hot chicks and sexual innuendo. And a couple times they gave "communion" to hot girls dressed as nuns. Very suggestive.
Tobias Forge is the mastermind behind the group Ghost, and there is an insane backstory to everything. Every album sees a new character singing, from Papa Emeritus I til III, then the bloodline was broken and Cardinal Copia was appointed. In the final concert of 2020, the cardinal was elevated to becoming Papa Emeritus IV, who will be lead singer on the next album which is expected early next year. It just so much to learn about the whole concept of Ghost, you should dig into it.😄
I did some research and the guy who becomes “Papa Emeritus” in the video is not actually Tobias Forge, but an actor/dancer who just kinda looks like him.
I love Ghost! You should do Square hammer - harder song with the best intro ever Mary on a cross - newer song which is really good Cirice - another epic song with a cool video
I was in the Circe video as an extra. It was filmed here in Los Angeles. They dont tell you what the video is gonna be about they just send you an email with a location and what they want you to wear. It's all a surprise once it starts! They just told us to show up in our sunday best and look as 'normal' as possible lol.
Ghost suggestions: From the Pinnacle to the Pit, Square Hammer, Cirice, Elizabeth, Ritual, Mummy Dust, Year Zero, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen, If You Have Ghosts (cover), Stand By Him. I could throw more at you but I think that's enough for one comment. Glad you guys are in to the throwback sound that's what got me in to them as well and now I've heard all of or almost all of their tracks and I always enjoy listening to them.
So much to choose from! The old stuff like Ritual, the epic satanism in Year Zero, the flirt with the sixties in Mary on a cross, the ballet dance in Rats, the Grammy awarded epic video to Cirice... Just do it!!
For anyone that doesn't know, the video was telling a story of the clergy around the band. I love that the band has a 'backstory.' It's really fun looking into it. They have shorts on their channel that tells the story, and they are equally cool and hilarious.
Tobias Forge is the guy's name. That's not him in the video. At the end of the video, the guy becomes Papa Nihil or Papa Nil for short. He's the founder of the 'church' that Ghost are the ambassadors of and the lead singers (all Tobias doing different characters) are his descendants except the most recent one. The woman in the video is Sister Imperator. It's all very nerdy deep lore stuff. For a nice primer go to the official site and watch the short videos. I think they're all titled Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc.
I scrolled through a good handful of the comments and didn't see anyone else say it, so a friendly "the more you know" for you guys: the word "macabre" is pronounced "muh-cahb" and the "-re" is silent. It means gruesome, ghoulish, or disturbing, specifically in relation to death in some way. Keep rocking, my dudes.
Literally what I heard until I watched the actual music video and one of the comments were the lyrics. I really don't understand the hate this band has been getting, but they're amazing
Ghost is great. Saw them live January 2019. Best live performance I've seen in a long time. The whole backstory and lore tobias created for ghost is just super.
The Dance Macabre was something that developed during the Bubonic Plague. When someone was exposed to the plague they generally had 3 days to live. So those who were sick partied hard knowing they were gonna die. So they'd dance , get drunk , get laid until dead. The phenomenon of the Dance Macabre was the offspring of a "fuck it I'm gonna have fun attitude". Took place year round depending on time of year the person contracted the plague.
That music being played at the very start of the video is actually the end of their song called Miasma. It's a progressive rock song that I'd highly suggest you check out. Another song you should check out is Mary on a Cross
if you pause at 10:36 that guy looks so much like a younger Corey Taylor ^^ had to do some googling and a double-take to make sure it wasn't actually him. He looks much too young, but still.
The dance I believe your looking for is the St. Vitus dance.(Sydenham's chorea) It's a disorder characterized by rapid, uncoordinated jerking movements primarily affecting the face, hands and feet.
You guys are looking for more to listen to, there are plenty here in the comments that are great! Scrolled through them and found one of my favorites that I've been benging lately, Faith. You guys also seemed really into the intro before the song started, also another favorite, and #1 on my list, Miasma, it's an instrumental powerhouse!
Yes!! More Ghost please!! Saw them in concert about a year ago, didn't know much about them, AMAZING SHOW!! Now they are one of my favorites. You should do "Cirice" or "Faith" next.
You know the original Dance macabre goes back to 1875. Also if you guys go back and listen to Babymetal Rondo of nightmares when the piano start playing in the background around 4:13 it’s playing Dance Macabre
I'm just catching up on all your reactions - great channel guys! I was a bit of a latecomer to Ghost. Square Hammer was my introduction (and you guys NEED to do this one!), but when I latch onto a group I like, I dig deep to their back catalogue - these guys are legit! Sure they're campy - it's modern day 'glam' metal, but the musicianship is top notch! Then I saw them live last year, WOW - what a performance! Tobias Forge & Co. put on a spectacular show. This song has such an infectious groove to it, which is a common thread to many of their songs. They really know how to write a hook. The lyrics (though laughable sometimes) are fun, singable - it all draws you in!! I HIGHLY suggest you listen to the song Miasma (it's heard at the beginning of this video when they approach the house and he opens the door) - it's an instrumental, but man, what a track! (complete with sax solo!) They have too many bangers to mention, but here goes: Square Hammer (as mentioned), Year Zero, Rats, Witch Image, Ritual, Mary On A Cross, Ghuleh/Zombie Queen (would have been good for your Halloween week!), Cirice, See The Light, Faith, Idolatrine, Monstrance Clock... You will not be disappointed with anything Ghost does! Cheers.
There's so much you can do for Halloween. Murderdolls - She was a teenage zombie Aurelio Voltaire - Brains! Deathstars - Cyanide (this is highly recommended!)
That guy in that clip is the first Papa Emeritus, called Papa Emeritus 0 AKA Papa Nihil,he died a year ago in Ghost's last show for now,the one in the "He Is" clip is his third son: Papa Emeritus III
I'm still piecing this together as I'm a newer Ghost fan, but: You need to listen to Prequelle from start to finish. It's the prequel story for the band about how the lead singer became Papa Nihil lore wise. It starts with the plague in "Ashes" with a world covered in ash. Then "Rats" where people have allowed presumably politics to corrupt their faith -- you let the rats into your sanctum. Then we get "Faith" where we continue the theme where there's a scourge in the guise of sanctity and it's someone with a quill(likely a politician) and continues with fools taking the stand. "Faith" also has a sneak peek at the end where the organ plays a melody from the last song on the album. Then you get a love ballad in the form of "See the Light" where the singer(presumably Papa Nihil) gets his first taste of the satanic cult. Then we get "Miasma" where Nihil likely fully commits to the cult and the world continues to fall. Next comes "Dance Macabre" where Nihil performs the sacrement and officially becomes Papa Nihil and falls in love with Sister Imperator. We're also told that we'll be hearing the chime, this will end, and this is the last time before it's over. It's apparent someone will die. Then Lucifer reminds Papa Nihil that he will die and all this will end in "Pro Memoria". In "Witch Image" Papa Nihil sells his soul for eternal life. In "Helvetesfonster" the bell finally tolls and Sister Imperatur dies. In "Life Eternal" Papa Nihil laments living forever without the one he loves.
Liz Fenning (playing sister Imperator) and Justin Andrews (playing papa emeritus) are really great people. They do an awesome joker/harley togerther too.
Also...I'm sure someone has mentioned the story, but just in case. This was kind of a prequel. The guy in the video becomes Papa Nihil (from the Kiss the Go Goat video), the "original" singer for the band and the father of Papa's 1-4. The blonde girl is Sister Imperator, the head of the church and mother to Cardinal Copia.
Ghost are fun, great reaction as always. Going to give you my go to suggestion...as requested 😉 check out Karnivool - Goliath or New Day, or any of their song, they're my absolute favourite band and can't wait until March when I can see them live once again.
New sub here. Saw this ghost reaction video. I recently found Ghost on TH-cam and was hooked immediately. Great reaction video. I’ll be watching more content.
Ghost is the lovechild of Black Sabbath and ABBA(Total compliment, BTW), Tobias knows how to write the songs. Also beware the girl giving the "Come hither" looks.
The character your referring to as ghost in this video is Papa Emeritus there have been four versions all played by the same guy who is the mastermind behind the whole Ghost band, Tobias Forge . There’s a lot of lore when it comes to ghost but it’s a really fun and original band and I recommend checking out the Circe or Secular Haze music videos next.
Dude you need to look into the lore of Ghost! Not lore as in how the band formed, but actual l o r e. There's characters and backstories and stuff and it's so fun to get in to.
I really appreciate you guys, always honest and really funny. A bit like Beavis and Butthead but in a good way! Thank you for the videos. Greetings from sweden!
It's Halloween time! Type O Negative's "Black No. 1" would be the most obvious song to react to. They're the Godfathers of Goth! The album version is like 11 minutes but the made for TV video is cut in half.
Love your reaction videos, listen to you guys while I work pretty much every day. I think a band you should react to is Havik and the song is Havik Gang. They were recently signed by Bone Thugs and I have been listening to them for at least 10 years.

More 80:s than the 80:s. Good songwriter that Tobis.
