  • In this video, we look at a specific double page spread from a 2016 edition of the countercultural anti-capitalist magazine Adbusters. Through this case study, we explore how magazines can encode and disseminate ideological perspectives to a niche audience. We also consider how magazines can use ideology to position and even manipulate their target audience.
Adbusters adopts a deliberately confusing and even non-committal mode of address, so there's no big, meaty conclusions in this video. But that's kind of a conclusion in itself. By lacking any traditional form of anchorage, Adbusters encourages it's target audience to explore and to investigate the issues and ideologies it is representing further. It's a confusing mode of address for confusing times!
    But, does it work?
