With those tires on the old one, I would have gone full throttle, some wheelspin is actually useful when pulling out of mud or snow, especially with a locking diff. I daily drive a RWD, and the only way to get out of heavy snow is by disabling the ESP and drifting myself out of it

Didnt engage diff lock in the old one. So essentially when when the wheels start spinning all the drive will go through one wheel

I'm so surprised that the more modern, double as powerful, torquier and more heavy car won this tug of war... not.
But old had a far better tyre...
So they should've had the same tires and they should've put an extra 300 kg weight in the old one :-)

But only if the new one works and has no electrical failure... which is not often the case. Land Rover were never reliable no they added all the electronic, good luck.

For the old defender being so beat on the numbers.. it put up a good fight. 👊
It may sound counterintuitive but because the old one has open mechanical diffs you need to feather the brakes to load resistance onto the free spinning wheel so that the power is more evenly distributed between all the wheels. Or for the price of a couple of wing mirrors on the new one just buy front and rear diff lockers. The new Defender is fantastic out of the box if you’re not experienced, and just speaking personally- I wouldn’t want to be in an accident in the old one, even though I own one ha ha.

@@drano1614 I meant the new Defender and the Discovery 5. But that should have been done with both Defenders as well. I am not sure that the diff lock on the old Defender was engaged. They also should have used an old Defender with a bigger engine more on par with the new Defender as well.

That old saying is dead and buried. I remember when the discovery 3 came out. We heard the same old claptrap. 15 years old/later & it’s still going like a dream.
Ok mine is the 4.4 V8, so probably the more reliable engine than the tdv6. But it’s full of ecu computers terrain response trickery & they are all still working like the day it was new.

Some of the best Defenders were sold here in Australia- JRA brought them to Australia with the option of a Isuzu 3.9 diesel- bombproof next to the Rover V8

You can tell the course has been specially set up for the new Defender especially on the rut bit on the other vid where the old one got stuck-no coincidence! unfortunately correspondants won't get another car to review if they are derrogatory. The old defender was loved because it was a no gimmicks no airbags basics farm vehicle that was'nt bought for the road-thats what the disco was for!

Oh please TFL’s car is just a lemon. Not all of em are. We had our defender x for about 6 months now. We have 20,000 miles on it. Perfectly fine. Land Rover is great.

Low range was engaged but the lever was over to the right so the diff lock wasn't engaged. Essentially the Pretender beat the Defender while the Defender was in 1 wheel drive mode. You also have a clutch - use it to advantage to get the load moving the way it is meant to move.
The old defender is just for show the new ones are work horses.

I think the Defender being in second gear, going forward, with the clutch out and STILL getting dragged backwards as soon as the new one engaged some power nullified the driving skill argument. This is a striking result (and I really like the old Defender).

I saw it, it made me a little bit upset... they made the old one look like a rubbish... and old one is ultimate extreme offroader... the new one is an SUV, the old one is a truck.. plus the tests involved speed and response, so new defender was going to win in anything that includes speed, comfort, response, etc... but if you go to extreme offroad, plus you are a good driver of course, cause that’s basically what you need for the old to be good of course... the new one helps you with everything, even though you can watch mor offroading videos between these too, and you’ll see what I’m talking about

Old Defender has a centre diff lock which needs to be engaged doesn't look like it has, also would expect the 2.2 Defender Puma to have traction control been on Defs since the TD5 days as Land Rover didn't install axle diff locks although you can fit them aftermarket

The new defender is definitely underrated.
Ye it's a great car really it's just that many people think it doesn't look like a defender and so they're just hating on it. I think it's a great car and considering how old the original is, the new defender would have looked something like the new one anyway.
The old defender has open diffs on the axles, so it has only got two wheel drive, one front and one back. It has no traction control to balance it out. I used to run Quaife ATB diffs back and front, which transforms it.

Seamus McShamish the supra is a very outdated car, the M5 is much newer and it has launch control aswell as many other assists which can help it out
