    Absolute masterpiece. Ethereal.

A lovely if under appreciated masterpiece. This piece should be more well known. Mendelssohn has more great overtures than either Mozart or Beethoven do, something which isn't mentioned often (He has this one, "The Hebrides Overture", "The Midsummers Nights Dream Overture", The Ruy Blas, the Trumpet overture, The "Calm Sea and Prosperous voyage" just to name the best .)

Doesn't it begin with a design which Wagner would use years later at the very beginning of Das Rheingold? Intriguing, at least...

Wagner also stole from Mendelssohn's Hebrides overture a section he used in "Flight of the Valkries"

Very reminiscent of Beethoven. Never got quite into Mendelssohn although his first 1st piano conterco is masterpiece and of course the popular Violin Concerto. I really like the shift in tone throughout this piece.
