i heard this piece for the first time in 2007 or 2008 i guess from barbie move (twelve dancing princesses) and i immediately fall in love since then! but no matter how hard i tried to find the title i never found it until today........this piece literally haunts me for years and i'm glad i stumbled upon this again today!

omg I relate to you... The copy of the movie I had was of low quality so it took me a few tries to find this (from the end credits). I found it five years ago and since then I haven't stopped listening to classical music :)

While writing this symphony, Mendelsohn was in vacation in our country and wrote these words to his parents home: "This is Italy! And now has begun what I have always thought ... to be the supreme joy in life. And I am loving it. Today was so rich that now, in the evening, I must collect myself a little, and so I am writing to you to thank you, dear parents, for having given me all this happiness".

I agree! He wrote some of the most delightful music in all of classical music. This first movement of the Italian Symphony and the overture to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" are prime examples.

My favorite Mendelsohn story is how his father, a businessman, indulged his son's musical interest. Instead of forcing him into business, he hired musicians to play the latest compositions, and invited friends and business associates into his home for the concerts. Not for an established composer, but for a TEENAGER just learning composition on the fly.
His son was a prodigy. It would have been criminal to direct him elsewhere.

I first heard this as a child in the late 80s or early 90s when it provided the soundtrack to a cassette version of the audiobook of Peter Pan - I can find no evidence that this existed outside of my memories, but I heard this music on Classic FM and was immediately transported back to my childhood bedroom and listening to this beautiful symphony. I'm so glad I found out what it was!

One year ago, another performance by the hr of this symphony was released, but conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada. While this recoding is great, I like the new one better.

I heard this symphone when I was young. Herbert von Karajan I think. A bit slower, a bit more emfas, better. It seems you compare everything with the first performance you hear. But André Previn is also a good conducter. What is all this Putin talk about?

Mendelssohn is one of the main authors of the Romantic period. The sensitivity and simultaneously the harmony of the symphony are amazing. Only an extraordinary composer, with immense talent and outstanding musical genius could compose this masterpiece. The orchestra’ s direction and interpretation are superb.BRAVISSIMO.

I like to imagine Mozart being sat down to hear this piece for the first time, seated next to Mendelssohn himself, and from nearby I watch them listen to the piece together.
Jarvi wasn’t just conducting this orchestra. I got the sense he was having a musical conversation with every individual musician there, and they were all enjoying it immensely. I certainly did. His hands were not so much directive, but inviting the participants to brilliant participation.

As I'm sure everyone knows Paavo is the son of Neeme Jarvi the world famous conductor and is adored and loved by musicians and audiences around the world for his sheer joy and love of the music and indeed musicians. He is an inspiration to all especially the young and he respects all musicians as he knows and understands how difficult it is to get to the top of the profession to become a world class orchestral player. He was born in Estonia but now resides in the USA with his family. A truly adorable conductor to work with, he has a generous heart and a wonderful sense of humour.

Exactly, totally energising :-) What has a similar effect on me is the 3rd part of Schumann's piano concerto and 1st part of Mozart's concerto no. 25, especially if the pianist is Ivan Moravec.

As usual, Paavo Järvi is magnificent. One of the best conductors out there.
Yes, he does have a childish innocence in his facial gestures, though he's backing it up with a lot of substance, which is more than can be said of Gustavo Dudamel.

Jarvi is the first conduct I love who's younger than me. He somehow manages to take a classical piece and find something new and refreshing, yet rings so right. His Beethoven symphonies are my favourite interpretation and he's just as great with this piece.

What a spectacular performance! Maestro Jarvi really dropped the mic, conducting this brilliant symphony. By watching this, we can see how each players are assimilate into this music. They're all enjoying the moment. It's always sensational to see Frankfurt radio symphony orchestra being played under the baton of Maestro Jarvi. As far as I can see, his sedulous efforts towards the score studies really make this performance outstanding!

I am in tears. We owe so much to F. Mendelssohn - Bartholdy for keeping the tradition of German Music especially Bach's music.
Growing up my parents would always play classical music on the radio. Specifically WQXR broadcast from New York City. Every Saturday morning, often while the family was eating breakfast, the show "Breakfast Symphony" would air, and the third movement of Mendelssohn's Symphony #4 would be the theme song to open the program. I love the whole symphony but this movement brings back good memories of family breakfast on Saturday mornings. Excellent performance by the FRS as lead by Paavo Järvi. Thank you.
So oft gehört, immer wieder schön. Hier können die Musiker nicht nur des Stückes wegen aus dem Vollen schöpfen, man merkt auch die Lust am musizieren in jeder einzelnen Note. Sehr angenehme Interpretation!

Around 18:30 (3rd movement) Paavo Jarvi leaves us in no doubt that he loves Mendelssohn's music. Wonderful.

It is not just this performance, but this orchestra is tops, including Jarvi,.
The "Italian Symphony" is a model of exhaustive energy, elegance, and aggressive cheeriness - the last named virtue possibly also a vice if one is looking for a symphony of more contrasting moods. I usually do, but its exuberance and sincerity always uplifts my spirit, and never more than in this committed performance which seems to convey all the joy Mendelssohn felt on his travels in Italy.
Smaller ensemble, blazing music. Mendelssohn would love this conductor.

Great music cannot be denied, and this Symphony is great music. It has sweep, bravura, and melody. Anyone who could compose the "Octet" at age 16 has to have what it takes as does this Symphony. Bravo! Bravo!
You could see both Mozart and Beethoven influences in this symphony. Mendelssohn is definitely in the top ten best composers of all time.
The Italian Symphony is one of my favourite compositions from Mendelssohn.

The first movement is just simply perfect. The way Mendelssohn drives the music with the simple opening motif throughout the movement is just absolutely sublime. Only Beethoven or Bach could've written something so exciting using only one or two themes.

Father was a businessman and easily could have squelched the music and insisted that Felix learn the family business. Instead, he hires musicians and invites his friends and associates over to his home to hear Felix's latest compositions.

I can't hear the 1st movement without thinking of the wonderful cycling scene in "Breaking Away"! A great example of the use of classical music in film.

I heard this symphony on one of my all-time favorite films, Breaking Away (nominated for Best Picture, 1979). And, wouldn't you know it, as I was driving my little one back from his horseback riding lesson one Saturday, I turned on NPR and what do I hear? This masterpiece!! With the scenery turning from rural to suburban on my hour-long drive, it was so perfect. What a better way to spend an otherwise boring Saturday drive than to enhance it with the sounds of Mendelssohn.

although Mendelssohn isn't my favorite composer, he's one of the best composers to hear one of his works live in concert. I saw Elijah live and it transported me. I never liked choral music before that but within a few minutes in was hooked.
He would be famous if only for his work on Bach's behalf. But he was also superb musician and composer to boot.

Especially 9:25 - 9:27 That insanely small section is one of the greatest and most perfect rich additions I've ever heard, it could have perfectly ended with the high octaves just before it, but it didn't. This addition is pure perfection, it transmits me such an unbelievable feeling of fulfilled majesty and sublimeness. And I don't even think those words fully express the feeling...
In all of humankind's inventions...Mendelssohn "Italian" is a gem. And here, Järvi brings out its shine and beauty!

Gitarre, sondern alles, was man hier sieht. Ich wüsste gar nicht, welches ich am liebsten spielen wollen würde.
Aber na ja, so bleibt mir nur der bewundernde Blick auf jene, die mit diesen Dingen umgehen können!
