How can you determine bent valves without taking the head off? After adjusting preload I had some clatter that diminished and not I have a puff of blue smoke when hitting the throttle. Would there be popping up in the intake? Popping out the exhaust? Or can the bent valve be not bent enough to cause popping? Will a compression check confirm? Thanks for the video
@ thank you. What can be the cause of puff of blue smoke on quick throttle? New engine here that I didn’t notice the smoke puffs till after replacing an oil pump that didn’t produce oil pressure which I think caused the roller lifters not to pump properly. Thank you for the reply
Usually it's from valve stem seals or piston rings but if they are new can be PCV valve too if that wasn't changed. But if the engine is completely new it has to break in so the piston rings properly seat, if not that will give the puff of smoke.
@ I did a compression test and I know at least one cylinder is leaking compression. How can I tell if the oil and leak is coming just from the bent valve not a broken ring or cracked piston. I’m hoping the valve train is not damaged and I can get away with repairing the heads. Of course I will pull the heads but I can’t see the rings without removing the pistons and that really adds to the cost of repair
You can look at the spark plugs for oil residue and if its the one with low compression then its probably leaking passed the piston rings or there is mechanical damage to the piston itself. If the valve stem seals are new then it's not the valve causing the oil burning.
Hiya. This is greatly explained. I have a 2017 vw polo. My engine light has been on and off for 2 months and I’ve had new spark plugs, new ignition coils, the mafs has been cleaned as well as other parts. The engine light is still coming on and the car is rough when starting, engine misfires, acceleration hesitates etc. So would you say that the next thing to look into would be to see if it has sticky valves?
A leaking exhaust or possibly leaking valve cover gasket could be the cause of these issues as well. From my experience 9 times out of 10, acceleration hesitation is most often due to a leak somewhere, either intake or exhaust. I would check for leaks before messing with the fuel pump/injectors.
Question I changed the water pump and timing belt on my 2005 civic and the wouldn’t start due to the timing are off I redo it about 4 times do you think I value bent any one feel free to respond thank you 😀
Well there is spring pressure, should move when pressed hard but by hand it’s harder or the valve may be bent slightly causing it to bind in the valve guide.

During the process of the RR, could the oil intake/outlet pipes on the turbo have been damaged? When I got my car back from the mechanic, it started hemorrhaging oil! Thank you again.

Sometimes you can just look straight through the spark plug chambers and see if the piston dishes have dents in them. You’d notice exactly what you see in the video here, the pistons having one or two parts on them that are completely clean
Hello bro had diesel poured in my audi a5 2lt tfsi and ive changed, throttle body, hpfp, 4 new spark plugs, coilovers were ok. After diagnostising again 2 cylinders not receiving compression. You think its the pistons or bent valves? Btw everything has been purged and new petrol re inserted already

Compression test or leak down test will let you know if it's a valve problem. Blue smoke won't really be cause by a bent valve.

Yes, but also check for a bad fuel injector or valve timing being off.

Yes but on these vws valve timing is a big issue with misfires

Rebuild the head with new valves is the best and cheapest way if you’re doing it yourself.

It's possible. Just do a compression check on all cylinders. All should be pretty even in pressure and about 90PSI (cold)

Yes, if they did it sloppy the oil tube can be bent and then leak, absolutely.

Yes with a bore scope. I have a video on that if you want to check it out. They are cheap nowadays and a good option.

Look at the clearance between the top of the valves and the rockers.

To find out I would do a leak down test on those two cylinders. I have video on leak down testing if you don’t know have to do it.
