Maple Leaf Rag on a 1915's Piano

- I played the Maple Leaf Rag on my old 1915 piano. The piano is well worn and inaccurate but I did what I could. But this time I put a little swing on the song. I particularly do not like to use swing on rag. But what did you guys think? Should I play Rag with swing or no swing?

Everyone in the bar: fighting, breaking chairs, smashing bottles, etc.
Pianist: Casually playing ragtime
Then there's the one guy who is still at the bar drinking like nothing is happening. And raises his glass for a sip when another guy as slid across the counter.
Even though it's anachronisic (Joplin was writing in the very early 1900's), I can't help but think of a Wild West saloon whenever I hear Joplin XD

Where has this come from I don’t understand

Scott Joplin was genius
Inventor of modern grammar was genius
Isaac Stillwell Are you saying his grammar is bad? If so, you don’t need perfect grammar to be on TH-cam.
@@user-dn9vr3oi1l Well, there should be proper grammar on TH-cam (we are not a bunch of uneducated heathans) but considering Mikolaj's (probably) Polish origin I think we can forgive him. :D
Thomas Z Oh, okay.
He wrote the Entertainer as well, another masterpiece

Lol yes, who's here in 2021?
Lady Dimitrescu is holding the camera.
Scott Joplin (1868- 1917), an African American was known as the "King of Ragtime" came from a poor family with no money for music lessons. He had free lessons from a German music teacher. He learnt to play piano at his mother's employer home. His mother was a domestic cleaner. We should appreciate his talent under such adverse circumstances. Thanks for sharing his work with us. You play excellently!😊
GERMAN YOU SAY?
Julius Weiss a German Jewish professor of music taught joplin for free as he saw he had talent
apparently Joplin was influenced by the German/Polish Polka rhythms becuse of that teacher.. which feature in Ragtime on the left hand. At least according to Wikipedia 🙂

People tend to play this extremely quick but i think this is perfect speed
Federico Galanti When people play this too fast, it ruins such a classic
Rag Time is not meant to be played at great speed anyway. This tempo was as it should be.
It could be a tiny bit slower in my opinion, but it's still awesome as it is
It wasnt played slowed because ragtime is played offbeat so thats probably one of the reasons why its played fast
I think it's still a little bit too quick. And a bit sloppy in the right hand at times, which is no wonder with the difficult left hand jumps.

I simply love ragtime music. My grandmother (God rest her soul) was an accompaniment pianist for performers in Holland and sometimes Germany. Ragtime was typically what she played.
You need strong and agile fingers - and boy did she! Last time I heard her play was almost thirty years ago - wonderful memory.
Thank you for your channel! I love listening you play.
I love ragtime! First piece I'm learning is maple leaf rag (about 90% through), then I'll probably branch into more of Joplin's work.

Pi R Squared Channel WOW... Just WOW
Pi R assuming that by log you mean log 10 (if you right only log that what it means atleast) then your this math gone wrong where you subtract the 2, cause 1-2= -1
it would be root -1 which is i then i^64 is 1 so then the ln(1) = 0 and then 0+5 =5 so the answer is 5... I guess
One of my regrets is that I never learned to play a musical instrument. They say it's never too late to learn and maybe I might have to see if that's true.
Never too late
Have at it. Take your time, though. This level of playing requires lot of hard work.
I started to learn piano when I was 30. It’s never too late.
I wanna learn piano but I don’t really have any where to practice because I guess money problems I’m a kid but I still wanna be able to learn piano

Why can’t songs still be like this
@SomeHumanOnThe Internet Where? I have looked and I can't find anything remotely close to this. there's still piano music being made, but nothing like schott joplin's.
Matthew Hall we won’t know what will become famous classic until the future when they’re still remembered. Because of the syncopation, ragtime somehow sounds almost as if it's swinging, even when it's played in strict rhythm. So a little more swing does no harm :-)
I agree, I think that swing is implicit in ragtime anyway, you cannot but play it with a little swing.
This specific song is almost completely swung if you listen to the original recording (obviously not like real swing but the triplet feel) most of his other songs are much more straight than this one.
115 years old and STILL kicks ass!!! 👍🏻
Hope that's gonna be me.

Wow! This piano sounds beautiful - it's almost as though like a fine wine it gets better with age. You can't fake a sound like that. Plus the real candles on the piano and everything about this video just makes me so happy
🎹
Great performance! The candles were a nice touch
Fire hazard more like
I guess in 1915 electricity was less common.
God, would you imagine what it would be like to hear this beautiful piece as you walked into speakeasy way back in the day?
The Entire Earth I don't think music would be playing in a Speakeasy, since those weren't around until the 1920s and we're trying to stay hidden from the law. Perhaps you meant just a normal saloon/bar?
Unfortunately Joplin himself would probably walk out in disgust if he EVER heard HIS music played anywhere but where he wanted it played also according to Joplin no one can play his songs like him they're all either too fancy or too dull...
Yeah... it'd be great till the police showed up.
An out of this world pianist. Wonderful.
Man your tempo and sheet music interpretation is just mind blowing. You seriously need to do more Joplin ragtime!! Cascades. Magnetic Rag. There’s too many to name that I would love to hear you play!!!
It’s hard to find good quality ragtime interpretation nowadays. Everyone either plays it too slow, too fast, or they add their own little touch to it that’s not necessary. You really bring the music to life and would even have Joplin himself pleasantly surprised with how well you play his compositions ❤

I like how he cleverly hid the double shotgun microphone under the mirror on the top. Nice effort.
lol yeah i noticed but i figured it was being held down to a soft piece of cloth so it doesn't vibrate with the playing i don't think he makes any effort to hide the mic on other videos it's really up to the best position according to the piano.

A classic, old-fashioned sound for an American masterpiece. 😊
Wow, a piano from 102 years ago! That's pretty cool!
As for the swinging - some parts sounded a little funny with the swinging. But other parts actually sounded pretty cool with the swing added in. Whenever I play this piece, I usually do it without the swing because it sounds a little better overall and it sounds a little more like rag time than it would with the swing.
GD Sam Stookey 103
I always felt like Ragtime was trying to replicate or at least approach the swing sound with straight notation. Thus it was kinda a halfway point between true swing and straight 8th's.
I have a piano that’s almost 200 this year! (2018) it’s made by.. god damn it I can’t remember.
You dumb? It's not ragtime when the time isn't "ragged". Then it's just classical music with accents on beats
Put some "jass" in it! I have an 1888 Aeolien player piano, and some Chicago Music Inc. piano rolls punched by Scott Joplin himself. His music is to be played like Reggae music or a quadrille; the 1/64th of a beat ahead. It sounds like 1880 Storyville District in a NawLeanz "sporting house" where the "Professor" kept time for the girls and when time was up, he played "their" song meaning it was "rag time" and the customer had used up the time he had paid for. Try Wiki-ing "jass", it was NEVER used in polite society!!! Personally, I think Scott Joplin's most beautiful piece is the "Rag-time Waltz" or the love theme from "The Sting", followed by his opera "Treemonisha ".
I think the age just adds a touch!
That old piano is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life
I absolutely love the sound of this piano.
