- Have you ever heard that song, The Blessing, by Kari job. Did you know that song was scriptural?
Today we are going to see where part of the lyrics for that song come from in Numbers 5-6
But first, welcome to Experiencing God 365 days through the Bible, Day 56
Numbers 5-6
Chapter 5 starts out with the Lord giving Moses instruction for the people pertaining to purity.
Numbers 5:5-7
Then the Lord said to Moses, 6 “Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If any of the people-men or women-betray the Lord by doing wrong to another person, they are guilty. 7 They must confess their sin and make full restitution for what they have done, adding an additional 20 percent and returning it to the person who was wronged.
Again, we see this ideas of a 20 % restitution fee.
Part of this call to purity is dealing with marriage and faithfulness to one’s spouse.
Today we hear of a new type of offering, the jealousy offering. This is an offering a husband brings to the priest if he is suspicious that his wife has been unfaithful.
And the wife is tested by the priest with bitter water that brings a curse of infertility to any woman who has been unfaithful. But if the wife has not been unfaithful, she will go unharmed, and the water will pass through her and have no effect on her womb.
This is wild stuff, I know but this was the ritual law for dealing with suspicious.
Chapter 6 covers the Nazirite Laws
Maybe you are asking yourself, what does Nazirite mean?
Nazarite means to abstain from or consecrate oneself to.
Nazarite is a term for a person who was part of a group of Israelites who took a vowel to separate themselves from the community and consecrate their lives to God.
Their law and vow is to abstain from wine, strong drink, and grapevine products. They also vowed to not cut their hair and to avoid contact with the dead.
When the vow was completed, the Nazarite would present sacrifices at the sanctuary. These sacrifices included a male lamb for a burnt offering, a female lamb for the sin offering, and a ram for a peace offering and bread without yeast for the grain offering. After the sacrifices were made, the Nazarite would cut their hair and throw it into the fire beneath the peace offering.
Before chapter 6 ends, we see the Lord tell Moses to tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Isreal with a special blessing. It’s a priestly benediction you may have heard before. And Ill read it from the NKJV
Numbers 6:24-26
“The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make His face shine upon you,
And be gracious to you;
The Lord [l]lift up His countenance upon you,
And give you peace.” ’
What stood out to you today?
God’s law is not about rules, it’s about protection. And He is continually calling his people to holy living and out of holy living, the blessing flows.
