      iracing barely uses any multicore, so its just full throttle on 1 or 2 cores, hence low CPU usage. 14-20% usage is pretty normal. Such a shame.

      @@AdamWebb1982 iracing is a single core game, it doesn't even use a second core.
      So on a PC if you have no headroom on your strongest cores you will be bottlenecks I had a 9700F and I was 100% utilisation on the CPU, now I have a 12600k I am only using 35% of the CPU which means I am now GPU bound :)

    What you have to remember is that iRacing is running on the Nascar Racing 2003 Season engine. It's running on a nearly 2 decade old engine, so it's actually quite impressive it even looks remotely nice still. Even considering the highly modified version of the engine released in 2008, that's still 14 year old technology.

    • @DanielCarter1615
      @DanielCarter1615 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I mean kinda true, but not really. iRacing mentioned that their code was based on NR2003 when they started out, but since now it is already so many times rewritten and refactored, that is not really anymore comparable to the old NR2003 code.

    Just a headsup - this doesn't work in VR mode yet. You get the image only projected in one eye. If you do think it works you're probably running vrperfkit, which seems to overrule the FSR option. You don't get the 1-eye issue, but FSR simply isn't being used at all, even when it's turned on.
    Iracing is aware so hopefully they'll manage to patch this.

  • @gavinguy148
    @gavinguy148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    One thing to try to load up the gpu is the turn up the options, I noticed you had a few thing on medium and a few things off. If you switch these on and then try FSR you may get higher gpu usage without a lowering of FPS.

  • @gdoumit
    @gdoumit 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The only real downside to using FSR would be if you use a native resolution of anything less than 1440. My monitors are all 1080p and using FSR on even the quality mode has far too low of a visual degradation than I can tolerate. It's just blurry and even some dash elements can be a pain to read at a glance. If you're on 1080p screens, I'd recommend leaving FSR off for now. FSR 2.0 might have better results if we get that in the future.

  • @MrFWStoner
    @MrFWStoner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Soon there will be FSR 2.0, this is a temporal upscaling technique. Little less frames gain than this version but much more higher quality picture. FSR 1.0 is better for lower spec systems, FSR 2.0 works best on high end systems.
    All in all, these techniques extend the life span of everyone’s hardware so thanks for that AMD!

    Did my own benchmarking over the weekend, Ryzen 5600x 3070 32Gb ram.
    I used a replay from first lap at Winton against Ai, Winton being a recent track has lower farmerate than most.
    My stock settings have me 92 FPS average, FSR Ultra 94 FPS and balanced have me 96 FPS but looked horrible on tripple 1080 monitors.I
    This encouraged me to try other things, I found 6 FPS by turning off SKY (AMD's Hyper threading) and another 3 FPS by tightening my ram timings so ended up with 101 FPS without FSR.

    Great video Dave. I wouldn't blame your processor. I think it has more to do with iracing not being optimized to take advantage. On a previous system, I investigated my low fps with what I thought were high end gear and found that when I have the fps drops because of low gpu utilization, CPU utilization was also low. Didn't make sense to me until I saw that only 2 of my 12 threads were pegged at max with the others just hanging out

    Dont panic guys im pretty sure thats FSR 1.0. I think like in ACC they gonna add FSR 2.0 and DLSS 2.4 proberly pretty soon, so Dave can do this all over again.
    I think at the moment your GPU especially in iRacing should stick to native res as high as you can. FSR 1.0 does not look that sharp so the feature basicly ruins its purpose.
    If FSR 2.0 and DLSS come available you can have a way sharper image on the higher quality modes because the upscalers and temporal denoiser work more effectively.
    For example a 3090 User doesnt need FSR 1.0 or DLSS without Raytracing on on a gameengine designed for fluid high FPS, but you proberly like the quality mode because the initial native resultion only gets slightly reduced, upscaled and denoised in realtime and then downscaled to the resolution you are playing on, which implemented correctly will get you more FPS and a better imagequality. In Asetto Corsa Competizione DLSS is basicly insane, im still in shock how good this game looks and runs in WQHD on my setup and im only running a RTX 2070.

      you can use the VR performance toolkit to easily try it out in VR. I found it wasn't worth it because of the reduced visuals (they are really obvious in VR) and it didn't affect the performance of the first lap, so not worth it at all for me. I have same spec PC as dave

    • @TheBrennanSchafer
      @TheBrennanSchafer 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lemurdreamur9257 you’ve been able to use FSR 1.0 on iRacing for a couple years now. You just had to download the VR performance toolkit separately. It doesn’t really help much unless you’re running a really high res headset (like a reverb) with a low to mid range GPU (like a 3060). Even then it’s not all that much better than rendering at a lower res and using other AA techniques. It does allow for you to run lower resolution on the sides and higher in the center which is nice. Although, I’m not sure if iRacings native implementation allows for fiddling with this. It may in the ini files. But it really only help people who are very GPU limited. Most VR users are CPU limited on iRacing.
      Honestly, the best thing iRacing can do is upgrade its engine to allow it to get better use of CPU’s as it still basically only uses one core. It’s best bet would be to upgrade to graphics engine like unreal 5 that is able to make much better use of CPU and GPU power. Providing much better graphics at a smaller compute cost.

  • @AdamWebb1982
    @AdamWebb1982 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The drop in performance on the 3090 system is due to CPU overhead of FSR being added to an already CPU limited situation. FSR is only really useful if the GPU usage ever hits 100%. Even a 12900kS or a 5800x3D will probably bottleneck a 3090 in iRacing.

    FSR is only ok if you run 1440 or 4k screens where image fidelity is not as noticeable. It's utter trash on anything 1080 though. I also have tried this on 1440p single screen and it's still annoying quality wise, AMD is making progress, but not there yet, good technology progress though.

    I usually get the 90fps I need, except for that first lap. Using this AMD AA with the VR performance toolkit didn't help that first lap at all. it's all CPU. We need a special mode for that first lap. I'd definitely switch that on

    Iracing is ridiculously unoptimised still for incredibly high end systems. I've a 5950x that boosts to 5.1ghz, RTX 3090 overclocked and watercooled, 64gb DDR4 at 3800mhz with iracing on a gen 4 NVME M.2. Running triple 1440p performance is incredibly underwhelming, gpu just tootles along at 60% usage. Iracing seriously needs a new engine, it's a dated potato. To be cpu bottlenecked with my cores that iracing is using hitting 5.1ghz is just laughable. I'm only getting 100fps or there abouts, but nowhere near the framerate limits I've set or what my monitors are capable of (144hz). There's so much more power to be used on the gpu, yet a 5.1ghz cpu isn't good enough on a game that's 15 years old.....please iracing lol.
    Don't get me started on watching replays on triple 1440p lol. It's about time they dumped this crap engine and got with the times, it's not like they don't make enough money, absolutely raking it in by the millions they are.

The framerate increase is real, but the weird graphical artifacts it creates just weren't a worthwhile tradeoff. I'd rather sacrifice a few settings for a nice smooth native resolution experience. Thermalright TFX it’s better than TG Kryonaut and last 8 years don’t use AS5 it suck’s )* , a CPU bottleneck is when your at 99-100% CPU usage, I bet you use Epic settings try high it looks pretty much the same and will drop the load down to about 30% usage, it really sound like a thermal issue to me

      iRacing averages your weekly race results if you race more than 4times a week, less than that and it just takes your best result of the week. So if you race 1ce a week vs someone who races more, you aren't losing out on the points side of things.

      iRacing doesn't stress the GPU, and isn't anywhere near GPU limited. Whenever this occurs, there's either two issues: 1) You're CPU limited (render thread(s) pegged at 100%), 2) The code is not optimized (runs poorly, underutilized hardware). In both of those instances, increasing your CPU performance will yield results, which is why your better CPU over Dave's renders (hah, pun!) an increase in FPS.

    your comparison of GPU usage with other sims would be relevant ONLY if the frame rate where the same. There were NOT. there were lower, means other Sims are not as optimized than iRacing and need more GPU to render even at a lower frame rate. Mean those sims are GPU bounded, were iRacing is CPU bounded , more precisely 1 core bounded, showing the whole CPU usage % is completely irrelevant too, as if 1 core is used at 100% it's the bottle neck for the whole game.

      It is iRacing that is not well optimized though.....All those other sims fully utilise the GPU, which is what you want. It is much better to off load suitable workloads to the GPU, as the GPU is much better at it. At some point iRacing is going to need to switch to a new engine because single core CPU performance is increasing much more slowly than GPU performance, and throwing all the workload at 2 or 3 cpu cores is limiting them.

      But ACC will look, fancier for sure, as it display more stuff.
