    i switched from 3070 to 4070S too, just for ACC, and I could crank my vr pixel density from 90% up to 150%! this made the game look 100 times better, a lot sharper and crispier. 50% uplift is real to me.

    I went from a 1660 to a 4060 due to being sent the wrong gpu and then boom just got a 4070super massive massive difference even from the 4060 i cannot believe how much better my experience is. Less stuttering, less issues overall. Love it and now 1440p ultra settings on every single sim out even acc. Crazy good time for sim racing and gaming/gamers in general.
    I got the asus 4070 super dual. Didnt want to upgrade my case or anythign else and im happy with my choice.
    The craziest part nobody is talking about with the 4000 series is the lower latencyy and response time. Its absolutely amazing and one of the first years ive seen cards actually boost those areas.

    I really like that you are bench marking for VR. Not a lot of that kind of content out there. Im a VR nut so I appreciate it! While GPU matters. For VR CPU is what really helps for framerate.

      I am glad you like the video and found it helpful. I am not so convinced that CPU is the major factor, I think it depends on which software you are running. But I will test this soon, with various packages, and see what is draining what from whom. Far as I know, most sim racers are using GPU (in VR) where as flight sims are draining a lot more CPU AND Gpu :)
      Hopefully the tests will clear this up.

      Take a look at my follow up video - th-cam.com/video/aVIZTyNFXEI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sQxUXLPJo0U85vAr
      Here I found a lot more performance in the 4070Super with a clean install of the drivers, a few windows adjustments (HAGS mostly - turned off) and a bit of overclocking (10%).
      I can now fly round the track, in iRacing, in VR, at 90Hz, with most of the settings at high.

      Hi, thank you for subscribing, it's be great that so many people have decided to join me on this journey into Sim Racing. It's a great community to be a part of, and I am really having a great time making these videos, so I appreciate your support and feedback.
      The older gamers perspective thing came from when I first started the channel, last year, and the big SIX OH was looming at my hard, and I was trying to find a way of embracing my age rather than running and hiding from it. I had a number of other name ideas, but they were already taken, so I had to find something that wasn't taken, but that appealed to me.
      And so, the Older Gamers Perspective was born.
      The concept really is that I am a gamer who has been around for a fair bit, so there shouldn't be anything that surprises me or catches me out, or disappoints me (Yes Starfield I am looking at you). But! It has to be said, this year, where I have been diving ever deeper into Sim racing has taught me that there is always more to learn, to surprise me, and to catch me out, but that it's still great fun to do so :)
      So, yeah, it's my perspective, and I am a gamer who is fairly old. Not as old as some who have subscribed here, or who I met at the last ADAC sim racing show, but still, pretty old :)
      Hopefully that explains it better. You maybe right that it throws some people off, but the name is mine now, so it is what it is, and I have to find a way to make it work.
      In a few weeks time I will do a live stream, talking about my channel, maybe I can make it clearer then.
      Hope you can tune into it.

      Cool, that is a great upgrade, let me know how you get on.
      I am not sure if AMS2 does not already have Openxr support, I think the problem is that openXR is difficult to use with Steam (which is where most people buy AMS2) unless you do some hocus pocus with open composite, which to be honest, I have not yet tried.
      DLSS would be nice, but I am not sure if the game engine being used is going to be able to cope with it.
      ACC is pretty cool, but it's not really AMS2, which has such a huge choice of cars, where as ACC is GT or leave. I do like ACC, but have yet to fully get into it, and do find myself spending more time on AMS2 than ACC.

      I have released (just today in fact) a follow up video on improving the performance headroom on my setup. Take a look at that and see if there is anything in there that will help. There were some surprises on which setting had the most effect (performance draining), and which did not. Also note that some settings in iRacing need you to reboot the application before they take effect (and not just the orange ones!)
      To answer your question, I am using an i5 13600k, (a build video is also on my page here - I am sound like an advert now, aren't I ;) ) and I also did some CPU metrics towards the end of my latest video, but only briefly.
      let me know, in the comments of the new video, if any of the performance tips help you out.
      After I did a marathon test session, I could race at 90Hz, in iRacing, at 1.7x, with a lot of the settings in iRacing on full. Oh and I also found that using OpenXR Toolkit was a real performance increaser.
      Good luck and I hope you find the solution you need.

      I struggled on with the Rift original for a long time, and kept with it because people kept telling me base stations are more accurate, which I guess they can be, if they are working at optimal settings, which was not always the case on my computer.
      When I moved over to the Quest 2, I was delighted with the inside-out tracking, and was able to play all the games I wanted to play, only without the cable. A revelation.
      The quest 2 worked kinda okay with my 3070, but it was always a bit flakey. When I moved over to the Quest 3, a lot of problems went away, and now that I am on the 4070Super, even more issues have gone away. Yeah, the 12 to 16GB argument is always going to be one that rages on. In 12 months it will probably be the 16 to 24GB argument.
      If you can afford it, sure, go for the 4070Super, or maybe the 4080Super, and at 16Gb you will have more future proofing than me at 12Gb, however.... I will probably upgrade to the 50 series when it comes out and sell my 4070Super (these cards do seem to hold their value nicely, but only if you don't hang onto them for too long) and see what that card can do.
      But I am an addicted geek who likes to buy and try new hardware. If you just want to put a card in and forget about it for a few years, the 4070TiSuper would seem to be the safer bet.

      Hi, I am glad you enjoyed the video.
      I play the standalone version of iRacing, through the Quest PC link app (as shown), and for ACC and AMS2, I use the option in steam that allows me to use the Oculus PC app, via cable link. Technically, this is OpenXR, as that is, I believe, what the app uses, but I know what you mean, and this has been suggested to me before, but....
      I have so far hesitated to try the OpenXR interface and setup simply because I spend far too much time sodding around with settings and not enough time racing :)

    If you want to see an improvment I would pick parts with a bit more tactic. For example a x3D cpu will help massively in vr with frame consistency and will push more frames to the gpu then any i9. Next things you could of done differently is get a used 3080 for significantly less but only slightly slower. And probably the last issue is you are using a quest which most likely taxes a lot of performance and looks like stream while something with displayport like a reverb g2 that displays perfectly like a monitor and doesnt cost the system performance for the compression.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for your comments. Which X3D were you thinking off that would be better than the i5 13600k, and still in that sort of price range?
      where I am in the world, the 3080 isn't significantly less, in fact checking today, it's fetching about 100€ less than I paid brand new, and it would be second hand. This might be different where you are.
      I don't mind buying second hand, but it does come with a risk, in that these types of cards are often thrashed (or mined) and the thermal pads can be on their last legs. Not always the case, but if I am paying this sort of money, I would prefer to buy new, and have a warrantee.
      The G2 is a classic headset, but with Microsoft declaring WMR as end of life, the G2 doesn't have much of a future. Besides which, I have tried one and I thought the sweet spot was a little small, even when compared to my CV1 headset, and not even worth comparing to the pancake lenses on the quest 3.
      Plus, I like to play mixed reality games, and do other stuff with my VR headset, so it's not a dedicated sim headset, so for me the Quest 3 works better for my needs.

      @@OlderGamersPerspective fair enough. 5800x3d or 7800x3d are both good. The 5800x3d is cheaper because its on last generation am4 socket. The 7800x3d is more expenive but can be a lot better depending on the game. Im on 5800x3d curently and Its what is going to be within the i5 budget most likely, you can buy almost any old used am4 motherboard with a b or x chipset for cheap but might need a bios update. To really enjoy the reverb g2 you have to use it for a bit and learn how to set it up for your liking. Everytime my friends try it out we have to redo the straps so its in the sweet spot for them. I didnt know prices where bad there, here in canada you can pay 300 to 400 cad less for one. Usually I go for asus tuf or strix regardless if its been mined or not because these cards have much better components then the any competion cards and stay cool even after years of use. • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I can run at 90Hz, and there is some headroom there, but it's track dependant and I am predicting at this point, that when Tempest Hits iRacing, that headroom will shrink.
      I can also run 90fps, with 60 Ai, and have some decent settings, but, only if I pick the right track. If I pick a demanding one, I can still run it at 90Hz, but I will see dropped frames in certain areas that are graphically taxing, such as Okayama with it's new 3D curbs.

    • @MrEDET
      @MrEDET 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Just to be clear - I get a stable 90fps at every track, also at Okoyama and Virginia for example. Right at the start with a full AI grid. Personally I found the difference between 72hz and 90hz huge, smoothwise. I just checked your Iracing settings and you even have a lot set to Low and foliage off - I have foliage on high for example. I'm not sure if it's the Link connection bottlenecking everything for you, but really, if my 2080S can handle a stable 90fps there is no reason to run this at 72hz with a much better GPU. Not trying to be a smartass btw :D I just feel that you're losing some serious performance somewhere. The G2 even has a higher resolution than the Q3.. Are you running in OpenXR and using ToolkitXR? Especially with ToolkitXR you can get a great performance boost by using ffr. Iracing is also quite CPU heavy, which CPU are you using? @@OlderGamersPerspective

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Then I am very happy for you. Speaking with others on the forums, problems with Okayama and Virginia are not uncommon, and everyone has different systems, so there is something up with these tracks. But if it's not happening to you, like I say, I am very happy for you. Does the G2 connect with a USB cable or a HDMi?
      The difference in 72 and 90Hz is a subjective one, some people notice it, others (me for example) don't. It's just the way it is. I haven't seen much difference in trying different cables on my system, perhaps the issue is with the length of my cable, which has to be fairly far away from my PC due to space issues where I have my computer.
      I don't think you are being a smart arse, but you have to accept that some people have a different setup, and so are going to get different results. So far, these are the results I have on my machine. it would be nice to improve on that, and I will try, but my view of the 4070Super being a small improvement over the 3070 will probably stand.
      I'll take another look at this, with the setup as is, and see if I can squeeze some more performance out of it, but so far, this is pretty much what I have seen other people getting on their systems. I am running an i5 13600k on DDR4 ram with an NVME for my OS and another one for my games.
      I will try OpenXR toolkit at some point, probably also make a video about it.
      Thank you for the feedback and for paying close attention to my video.

    • @MrEDET
      @MrEDET 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Okayama and Virginia are more demanding for me too, I had to decrease some gfx details to also get 90fps there. The later tracks from Iracing are more demanding, though Virginia for example became less demanding again after it was updated/patched a couple of times.
      The G2 connects directly with my 2080S display port, but the differece between that or Link/VD is not that extreme. It differs per game but some games weirdly enough run better on my Q3 with Virtual Desktop than with my G2, like Dirt Rally 2 for example. I guess some games don't run that well with WMR, which the G2 uses.
      Ofcourse every machine is different - I just mentioned this trying to help you figure out where the bottleneck is. The 4070 (not S) is already something like 50% faster than my 2080S. I use a I9 9900 so your i5 13600 is a bit faster too.
      Using OpenXR/ToolkitXR helps a lot (setting up ToolkitXR gave me something like a 15% performance boost), I suggest Wanderschikanen.tv here on TH-cam, he has a great setupguide for that. Also curious if the performance would be better for you using VD instead of Link.
      Hope you figure out how to increase your performance a bit more. And yep.. when the rain update comes I'll have to fork out the $$$ for that 4090 too :-/ ;)

      Yeah, I am yet to try the OpenXR toolkit, mostly because I have heard people having issues with it, like yourself, but I will give it ago at some point and make a video on it. Perhaps that will help.
      From a bit of testing today, it doesn't look like any of the sims I use are coming close to maxing out my cpu, i5,13500K, so the question is, where is all this extra performance going to?

      yeah, I find this setting, for the PC, can also randomly change for some reason. I mean, I don't suppose it's random, probably something I am doing with the tests, but it's good to check it out every now and then. Mine is set, I think to 1080, so it is just a small panel in the middle of my 1440 monitor.
      And good to have another older gamer onboard :) I am soon to release a new youtube profile icon thingy, to replace the one I have now. I put that up last year in a hurry, having created it in iclone using Headshot to replicate a photo of me. But yeah, I do look young there. The new one is a cartoon that was drawn by an artist on Fiver, and better reflects my age.
      But yeah, getting old sucks in one way, but in another, it's fascinating to see how far we have come with computers. I can still remember the first arcade game I played (in my local swimming pool). Space invaders.

    It seems slightly strange to talk about performance in iRacing by mainly focusing on how much of your GPU isnt being used (overhead). You are essentially leaving any extra power you gained unused?
    Having 40-50% overhead should easily be enough for the jump up to 90Hz

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, thank you for your comment.
      I have thought long and hard about what you are saying here, and yes, it does feel like I am leaving too much power on the table, unused, so I am rerunning my tests, at 90Hz, to see if I can get a clearer picture of what I need to do, in order to run at this speed.
      I think my initial thoughts were based on my experiences with the 3070. This card would often get hot, and I became wary of running it too hard or too fast, in order to make sure it didn't cause a problem mid race (and wreck other people when I lost control of my car). In other words, I became very cautious.
      However, I am using a different card here, and so I need to treat it as a separate entity, and see if it can be pushed further.
      My next video will look at pushing the 4070 Super, at different settings. I will do iRacing first, but AMS2 and ACC will follow shortly after.

I probably, I won't be playing racing games as i am not interested intro playing one, as i will be playing games like beat saber, vrchat and Pavlov but i can't really decide if getting an rx 7900 xt that it should would get me a little bit more performance? I guess I'm not the only one who can't tell a difference with 72Hz and 90Hz in VR. I'm using the Quest 2 with a 3070Ti, and I recently switched from running bare bones at 90Hz (details all off, 8x sharpening, etc) to the recommendations in the VR PDF, but at 72Hz. The game looks better, and surprisingly, I'm faster. I'm not sure why, or how, or if it's just coincidence, but I'm consistently better in the GT4 and F3 since the switch to 72Hz. So worst case, it's the same for me.
    Another thing to try is the OpenXR upsampling. I've read that setting Oculus to 1x and then setting the resolution to the 2704 x 2736 (per eye) in OpenXR has better performance, for the same resolution, as setting Oculus to 5408 x 2736 and OpenXR to 1:1. I've gotta try that and benchmark. I'm assuming when running AMS2, you do the same sort of upsampling in SteamVR for that game as OpenXR for iRacing...
    I got a noticeable performance bump from the other OpenXR settings, so I'd recommend you try that (Turbo mode, Foviated rendering, etc)

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, indeed, running at 72Hz to 90Hz, really doesn't feel that different to me. I am doing some more tests this week, at 90Hz, but this is mainly because there is some interest in the comments to see what the card can do when pushed at this refresh rate. Video to follow soon...
      The openXR thing is a whole other Rabbit hole that I expect to be sucked into soon.

      Hi, I am glad you found the video helpful.
      Getting a PC to run with the Quest 3, in VR is very demanding and difficult to achieve on a budget. It can be done, but it will mean you have to limit your expectations.
      Getting up to 90Hz is not super difficult, and most of the time I was able to manage it on my 3070 (non-ti), but it was paired with a 13600k.
      I am not familiar with the 9900kf, but a brief search online has revealed that the 13600k is about 25% faster, which isn't a whole lot, so in theory, yes you could get there.
      But... You may find that you will have to drop some settings downwards, and you may still not be able to achieve 90Hz on some tracks that are not very well optimised.
      If you can hang on, the 50 series will be out later this year, probably, and that could help flood the market with some second hand 30 and 40 series cards, which will make the whole thing cheaper.
      Otherwise I would say the 3080ti is a solid card, and it will be a big upgrade from the 2070Super, the question will be, does the bottle neck shift to the CPU?
      Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

    Appreciate the effort benchmarking for VR - a lot of work. G2 here on 3070/5800x3d combo - iRacing only. Couple of things I noticed, when selecting different refresh rates while the render resolution was consistent , there is a factor underneath the x * y resolution , the higher the refresh rate you selected the higher that factor. I am ignorant how meta works but is that slider perhaps increasing the resolution too ? This would def hurt FPS for higher refresh rates as its pushing more pixels. Also someone else said if you maxed settings in iRacing, iRacing restart is required for some settings to take effect - you might have done that of course. Just curious , looking to upgrade to provide some headroom for Tempest as well , worried how much perf we will lose in VR. Hey @chrissimpson1098 :)

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not an expert, but I can tell you that increasing the slider does cause an increase in resolution. You can see this by the position of the black boxes, and also what sort of magnification the UI needs. It does add to the performance headroom (or rather it subtracts from it) and if you want to need a better performance rating for you headset, you are best to try lowering the slider. When I was using the 3070, I used to have the slide at 1.3x, sometimes lower.
      I have experimented with the settings in iRacing and from my own personal observations, I can tell you that some stuff can be changed without restarting iRacing (most of the stuff on the left for example), but things like Anisotropic filtering, MSAA, Dynamic object shadows, and Anti Aliasing, for example, all require the sim to be restarted in order to take effect.
      I've just been doing a whole load of new tests, to see which one has the biggest overhead (spoiler, it's MSAA at 8x), and will be publishing that video soon.

      @OlderGamersPerspective  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you for the comment. You are essentially correct, and I believe I say as much in the video, except for a couple of extenuating reasons. Firstly, I was concerned the 3070 was bottle necking my system, due to the 8gig ram and the fact that it used a lot of energy and got very hot doing so. Secondly I have software (outside of sim-racing) that takes advantage of AV1 codec, and for this I need the 40 series.
      I was tempted last year by the 4070, but not convinced. A year of using the 3070 with the 13600k caused me revaluate this, and look again at the 4070, and at that moment, the super series came out, with a better price ticket (not a fantastic one, but it is what it is), and the moment was right to jump to this card.
      I could have, and perhaps should have, waited for the 50 series, and that's the conclusion I reached in this video, that coming from the 3070 to the 4070Super was probably not the smart move, but at the same time, I needed the features of a 40 series card, and I didn't want to wait a year for the 50.
      Plus, in my next video, I take a deeper dive into the 4070Super, with iRacing (and hopefully AMS2 and ACC in the following videos), and find ways to get great performance with this card. Certainly better than you see here.

      So, the intel 13600k CPU is not the problem. I found it was in fact a combination of driver issues from NVidia, and some poor optimisation on my behalf.
      I cured the driver issue by downloading the latest and using NVClean to install a clean version of it.
      I solved the optimisation issues by making some further adjustments to the Nvidia Control panel, and installing Tweak GPU III and allowing my 4070Super, OC version to enjoy it's 10% OC capability. Doing this I saw a 12% increase using the Speedway test in 3D Mark.
      This then allowed me to run iRacing at 90Hz and at some pretty aggressive graphic settings. I created a new video where I go through all of this, you can find it here:
      th-cam.com/video/aVIZTyNFXEI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=kOklbIQ6ODx0Y3vY
      In that video, I used a Go Pro, sitting in front of my monitor, to record a CPU Usage gadget with the iracing screen next to that so you can see what's happening (I used a go pro to avoid impacting on the results of measuring the CPU ).
      This showed the 13600K was using one thread for iRacing, and rarely went above 50% usage.
      This was measured with an online race (not an Ai Race), and proves this CPU can handle iRacing at high settings, and it's the GPU that takes the brunt of the performance curve.
      Not sure what you meant by "tuning my RAM". If you mean, have I changed the XMP profile in my mainboard bios to access the higher ram speed available to me? Then yes, I did that when I first built my computer and the RAM is running at it's top spec'd speed.
      A few people have mentioned to me that the 13600K might not be enough for iRacing in VR, but that simply isn't true. At least at the moment, before rain in the form of the Tempest generator arrives! After that, who knows.

      You 13600k cpu is perfectly fine those people are talking crap. I thiought you were using an older i5 cpu which is not the case. You only need to get proper high quality ram and than manually tune it. You will get way better results than xmp profile. Have a look at Framechasers youtube channel you can see there why tuning ram can have a gigantic impact on your performance. Especially for 1% lows will get way better too. Im glad you get that 90fps now. Take care :) at the end of the day its each their own. Im a sucker for improving my performance by tuning ram everything and overclocking my cpu. @@OlderGamersPerspective

      Hi, thank you. I have set up the XMP profile on my ram, but it is just DDR4, so I guess I will have to wait a bit until I can create a DDR5 system. Thinking about trying an AMD 3d chip for that one, just to see what all the fus is about :)

      Im using ddr4 too im using b die ram running at 4000mhz. they are originally 3200mhz with xmp but because they are they b die they can easily be clocked higher with the right voltage. Take care.@@OlderGamersPerspective

      I'll probably not push the ram on this system as I need it also for work and content creation, which can be a bit precious about overclocking and not work at all. BUT....
      I am planning to build a PC dedicated rig, probably an AMD CPU/GPU combo, and that would be a good candidate for pushing the ram a bit more.
      B-die ram I have not heard of...

    I have very good settings for ACC on a video + addendum on my channel. They are not for VR but they are for anyone looking for great graphics sqeezing all possible Fps out.

      Cool, I will check it out. Can you link me to the video? I am still finding my way with ACC.

    3070 to 4070s is a very bad upgrade, if it was at least 4070ti/tis then maybe.

    • @OlderGamersPerspective
      @OlderGamersPerspective  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very bad is subjective. If it suits the needs of the person buying it (for me it did), and they can afford it (I can), and it solves an issue they were having that stopped them getting full enjoyment from their computer equipment (I felt the 3070 was a bottleneck and I was proved right by my tests - see follow up video to this one), then I think it makes sense.
      Your millage may vary. For most people who have a 3070, as I said in the video, it probably makes more sense to wait for the 50 series. I am not good at waiting, and didn't want to, so I jumped on the 4070Super the moment I could order one, and to be honest, the improved performance and graphics (again, see follow up video to this one - th-cam.com/video/aVIZTyNFXEI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=sQxUXLPJo0U85vAr ) has give iRacing a graphical new lease of life.
      I can and do play at 90Hz, with lots of graphical settings turned up to 11.
      For me, it's a good upgrade. but as I say, it's not going to be for everyone.

      @@OlderGamersPerspective "very bad" not in abstract, but in practical value/dollar metrics, for lower price you could have gotten 7800xt or for a similar price even a 7900xt on a good sale.
      Not to mention 4070s is "good value" only compared to 4070 and getting a 4080s is not that impractical depending on the application.
