  • In this lesson, which is applicable for playing and singing with any instrument (whether bluegrass or otherwise), Will plays and sings with the metronome, using the bluegrass classic Blueridge Cabin Home as the example. First, Will plays rhythm with the metronome. Then, Will sings with the metronome. Lastly, Will plays AND sings with the metronome. This is not easy, but it's worth practicing all of these components until you can confidently play and sing in time.
Additionally, lots of bluegrass musicians talk about playing with "drive." A lot of playing with drive is simply playing with good metronomic timing, i.e., when the bluegrass ensemble's rhythm is tight, when the bass, guitar rhythm, banjo, and mandolin are locked in. But singing with drive (in time) is also important or it will cause the whole ensemble to drag or speed up. Dan Tyminski might be the best example of a bluegrass vocalist who sings with drive, with extremely punchy, rhythmic, and accented singing.
