Bluegrass Banjo Backup - Filling the Gaps - Accompanying Vocalists - Dynamics
มุมมอง 477หลายเดือนก่อน
Will demonstrates the banjo backup concept of "filling the gaps," whereby a banjo player inserts a lick to fill the gap when a vocalist breathes or pauses between lyrics. Will also explains how to adjust one's dynamics so that the banjo doesn't drown out the singer. As an example, Will accompanies Dominic singing Your Love is Like a Flower in the Key of B.

In this lesson, which is applicable for playing and singing with any instrument (whether bluegrass or otherwise), Will plays and sings with the metronome, using the bluegrass classic Blueridge Cabin Home as the example. 3-2 Pulloff - Tribute to Terry Baucom - Banjo Lesson
มุมมอง 6586 หลายเดือนก่อน
A good, crisp 3-2 pulloff on the g-string (3rd string) is essential to bluegrass banjo. This lesson is a tribute to the late, great Terry Baucom who died in late 2023. Baucom's pulloffs were as crisp and punchy as anyone's. In this lesson, I explain how using the ring finger, rather than the more common middle finger for the 3-2 pulloff can lead to greater crispness and consistency in your pull...

    I can't tell you how many guitar players don't understand this. I back way off when other people are soloing (I play Blues Music). It is a courtesy, like not talking while someone else is speaking. But at least 90% of guitar players do it. They play over each other and the singer and I'm not talking just about the beginners or lower level talent doing it, It's also the guys that are supposed to be good. It kills the dynamics and muddies the sound. Everybody can't be out front at the same time.

    • @bloomfieldbluegrass
      @bloomfieldbluegrass 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly right. It's especially difficult with loud instruments like the banjo. You really have to back off. It's also imperative that the singers learn to sing loud, which is very much a part of bluegrass singing. But the instrumentalists are there to support, not drown out.

    At about 3:00 you demonstrate a roll that doesn't match the 1-3-1 pattern, bottom of your screen. I've watched this demo in slow speed, but I don't see how the #'s fit what you're playing.

    • @bloomfieldbluegrass
      @bloomfieldbluegrass หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've rewatched it to make sure that it's right and it is. Here's another way of stating what I'm doing. Begin by plaing the Thumb (1) on the G string. Next is the middle finger (3) on the high D string. Then the forward roll continues with the thumb (1) on the high G string, then index finger (2) on G, then middle finger (3) on high D. I hope that helps.

      You're correct, she is certainly the purest singer on the list. The reason she's not number 1 on our list is because her best vocals are not traditional bluegrass. Her recording of "A Living Prayer" is spectacular. And she's just as good live. Actually, better.

      Beginning to learn harmony is admittedly difficult. To start, try singing just two parts. Have someone sing the root (say middle C), and someone sing a third above (E), which is the third note in the scale. Just both sing "ah." See if you can each hold the note and hear the resonance of the harmony. Then try having the second singer move from the third note of the scale to the fourth note of the scale (F). The harmonies will change but will no suggest a new chord (the 4th chord or F chord). Then have the second singer return from the fourth (F) to the third (E). All the while the first singer should stay on the root (middle C). Give it a try! Then you gradually build out from there.
