i finally understand what Jane Austen meant when she said "crowded ball rooms",, it was by no means an exageration 😆

Make sure you're in shape! The 1-2-3 stepping can be very fast, and when you add quick turns and spinning on top of that, it's easy to get queasy and disoriented. And don't eat a big meal beforehand! :-)

Part of the footage is from another ball, the Rudolfina Redoute, where the women wear face masks until midnight. It’s organized by the Rudolfina, one of Vienna’s Catholic fraternities.

Very nice video, but one slight correction- the Austro-Hungarian Empire ended in the early 20th century. It began in the 19th century.

28th June 1914......the curtain falls on the wealthy Empire in all its glory. Only the glorious Palaces remain.

Austria-Hungary fell apart at the beginning of the 20th century (following the WW1), not 18th century. Austria-Hungary didn't even exist until 1867/8...

About half of the footage looks like its coming from the Rudolphina Redoute, not the Elmayer Ball, what would you say is the biggest difference?

I went to Vienna in 2018 and attended two waltz balls at the Hofburg: the Aertzeball and the Jaegerball. I had a dance partner for both balls and danced until balls ended at 5:00am. It was an experience I will never forget. The Fledermaus Quadrille IS fun, and I learned it on TH-cam...all 6 parts. Be sure to learn the chant everyone sings in Part 6, which makes it twice as fun. I had intended to return to Vienna this year to try two or even 3 more balls but the pandemic ruined my plans. Oh, well...Alles Walzer.

My friend Philippe Jordan is the conductor of the Stadt Oper, and does the operable every year on New Year's Eve. He never gets to dance with his partner Thor.

Who doesn’t love what? I debuted, as did my daughter, at age 17, and we all loved it. I still go every year, and there are hundreds of people in their 20s who love the balls. I am willing to bet money that you have never been to a ball, and are just badmouthing something you don’t even know.
