Just an FYI… there are video overlays at the end so you can’t read the text you added ( at least I can’t on my iPhone). I am guessing that is what you mean by the end of the video?
I just watched Wild Berry Quilting’s review of this box and you should watch it before you start making the pattern. There were issues with cutting measurements and templates. Since you are new to quilting, those issues would cause frustration for you.
And it is worth a trip to a quilting shop and always look at there clearance section. In order to stay in business they do have sales quite abit. It is worth it to stay close in case you need more. Joan's is the last place I would put in a quilt. The quality is not there. anymore.and I use to shop always there. But the quality is not there. For about 6 years now.
I got the same box in August. I can sew, and I make garments without patterns. I'm only will be making quilts, not any of the other stuff. Maybe a bag or 2 to carry projects to retreats.
found out form others that my message at the end was not shoring under the channel guides - I found the exact same fabric on Temu and knew it was just not great fabric
I’m also a garment and Home deck sew-er with 47 years experience. I can sew just about anything but wedding dresses and men’s suits. I did want to learn to quilt and saw a video saying a Mrs Quilty box was the best box for beginning quilters. I purchased the Mrs. Quilty for $30 plus shipping. I got six pieces of fabric, a ruler and a circle with a dozen really crappy pins with the color peeling off the heads. I did get the magazine as well. Now in comparison, I get the Fat Quarter shop’s Sew Sampler box for which I pay $29.95. The fat Quarter shop box is packed full of notions, patterns, and beautiful fabrics. I have received jelly rolls, honey buns, layer cakes. The last box I received had three charm packs, I will not be buying another Mrs. Quilty box, it is a waste of money, but at least now I’ve got six pieces of fabric from Mrs. Quilty that I have no fear of cutting into and making a mistake. I can practice cutting on that and not ruin the good stuff that I got from Kimberly Jolly for a lot less money. In my opinion. PS there’s a reason why Joann Fabric is in Chapter 11 at the moment. Their fabric hasn’t been quality fabric for 20 years. The $4 per yard cotton is threadbare. You get better garbage on Amazon for less money. Let’s just end with that. Hobby Lobby fabric is the same price, every other week it’s 40% off, the quality is twice that of Joannes, and closer to quilting quality. Albeit, they do not have the variety. It’s much slimmer pickings.
My personal experience is that Mrs. Quilty box is a rip off with frabric from Temu init. I loved getting fat quarter shop's box, but am running out of room for fabric LOL
@@MaryChrapliwy I’m having the same exact problem 😅 perhaps we should start a support group. I feel I need someone yelling at me, “ just cut it already”! I can’t it’s so pretty all bundled up neat like that. I actually broke down & opened up one of my jelly rolls. I starched it. It’s all cut and ready to be pieced.
Joann's has started buying Moda which is really pretty good quality. You do have to look to make sure. Lesser quality fabric will not hold up in a quilt however, would probably be great for table runners, pot holders, and things of that nature. Good quality cotten from a quilt store is recommended for the longevity of a quilt. In the past 1800s to about 1960s, the fabrics were much better quality. I still have my grandmother's bedding from the 50s, amazing quality.
Not quite sure why anyone would compare good fabric to Joannes. Joannes fabric is not high-quality I believe that you can get beautiful fabric and quilting store and yes you do pay for it. Most stores though do you have clearance sections online has clearance and you can get great fabric for a very low price. From what I’ve seen of the Mrs. QuiltyI believe that most of her boxes are the same and the fabric doesn’t look so wonderful. She never seems to have the new and upcoming fabrics in any of the boxes but that’s only from what I watch on TH-cam. Good luck with your journey with quilting and picking up sewing again I’m sure you’ll love it
There are some really simple free quilt patterns out there for new quilters. Sometimes a quilt-a-long or block of the month can be a great way to build skills if you want to challenge yourself!
There are many different levels of fabric quality and as in all purchases you get what you pay for. High end quilting fabric has a higher thread count. Within each fabric company, Moda and Kona included there are different levels of fabric quality. The Kona and Moda at JoAnn's is a lower thread count than that purchased at a good quilting store. I am not saying it isn't good fabric and it does have its place in the fabric world. It just will not be as durable as a higher thread count fabric. Budgets differ greatly from one person to another. I shop at Joann's for some fabric and my local quilt shop for other fabrics. You want your quilting project to last so buy the best quality fabric you can afford, keeping in mind the wear and tear on that particular project.
I don't buy stash building boxes any more. I found I didn't love over half the selections. Personally I never buy pink, orange or purple or super multi-colored flowers, and that's what it was mostly. I'm picky with what I choose in-store so why take chances with stash boxes. I will add I do already have a good healthy stash and have learned what are my style and preferences for my quilts. Here in Canada it is over $22 per meter, so I feel lucky to have enough for probably the rest of my life!
LOL - I have a good size stash now and really don't need to buy anymore. I have a subscription to Sew Sampler, but will likely only keep for a couple months
I just finished quilting a polyester cotton blend quilt. I love it. It has bright and beautiful colors. I understand cotton, but some polyester blends are nice. Many are color fast and durable. My whole quilt 60 X 60 cost just under $100. I'm happy with my results. I'm not entering it in a show or competition. It's not for sale. To me, it is quality and value. I have made 100% cotton quilts. I probably will again, especially if it is going to be used in bedding or for babies. The quilt I made is to throw on the sofa and warm up while reading or watching TV.
I see a lot of people getting the boxes from Mrs Quilty . I have never gotten the boxes from any of the boxes yet , like fat quarters there’s a ton of them out there I don’t remember all of them but there’s a few I saw that I wanna maybe order Mrs. Quilty was one of them but I haven’t decided yet, but I think the fabric is pretty. They have awesome colors. They do kind of go with more country and the older kinds of fabrics but I think I don’t I think I’ve seen other stuff too so you just go girl use what you wanna use I think it was a good box have a great😊
I currently have Mrs. Quilty & Sew Sampler subs, and I used to have a Quilty Box sub until they switched to only paper piecing. I do like the fabric on Mrs. Quilty but I feel they don’t offer as much as the other 2 do/did for the price. I’m going to cancel Mrs. Quilty & try to find another one similar to Sew Sampler/Quilty Box. But I hope you enjoy your sewing. 😊
I just got my second box, I still havent made anything yet. I'm an intermediate sewist at best, have never quilted so I thought this would be a good way to start. I'm going to give it some more time before deciding if I'm going to keep it or not. There is a small patchwork basket in this box id like to try using my own fabrics. Another review I watched mentioned some editing errors in the booklet. I did notice the project after the basket in mine had the description of the basket again. Theirs said some meaurements were off.
you could learn to sew, there are sewing classes somewhere in your neck of woods LOL I learned first from Mom, but learned most by taking two night classes at a high school many years ago, back when they still had home ec classes - long ago
I grew up watching my mum sew. I had to keep out of the way and she never actually taught me anything. But I was always fascinated and interested. And, although my mum never quilted, I was in awe of the craft. Life happened and I taught myself to quilt about 6 years ago, in my 50s( with guidance and instruction from alot of fabulous YTers). What I'm saying is, give it a go. What you watched yr family members do, is in yr memory. It will flow. Have fun with it.
Sorry about that - I ordered cheap fabric from Temu and it was exactly the same as the Miss Quilty fabric - that is why I quit. It was an expensive box with cheap fabric
I have also started getting this box. The fabric feels and looks like art gallery fabrics and they are good quality. I just got my second box and I like it.
We just lost our nice JoAnn’s store. They merged with a store farther away. They own so much money to their vendors. It is horrible. I don’t know how the vendors can let shops run up that much debt. Sad.
I don't buy fabric from Joann's. I do know that unless you use the coupons, Joanne's is expensive. You mentioned that since you have not sewn a while, you did not want expensive fabric however, subscription boxes seems to be an expensive route to take. First you are paying for notions you probably don't need if your goal is more fabric. Second, you lose your option of choice. At 30 dollars or more per month, you would be better off going to a fabric store and purchase a couple of yards of quality fabric that you do like. Or you can purchase fat quarters or layer cakes. My fabric shop offers seasonal sales and end of bolt sales which is a good time to stock up on background fabrics and backing fabric. Also , consider the amount of time you are putting into those projects. Time is too precious to waste on poor quality fabric.
If you have a hobby lobby near you try there 40% and you can really get good fabric with some good names kona solids and some other ones two. It's worth the shop
That was an older video - I have now experienced the joy of good fabric. When I found the exact same fabric that Mrs. Quilty box had for way less on Temu, I quit the Mrs. Quilty box.
I can tell by the comments that many of you did not watch until the end - please be sure to watch until the end
Just an FYI… there are video overlays at the end so you can’t read the text you added ( at least I can’t on my iPhone). I am guessing that is what you mean by the end of the video?
Yep, couldn’t read with all the overlays. It’s a TH-cam thing I guess. Maybe come back and pin and update with what you said at the end.
Do they do for the uk
