For everyone worried about the safety of the guys at Proformance. Everyone that works at the shop wears respirators and goggles. They all were excited to be featured in an Ammo video, and wanted their faces shown. Thank you for worrying, but we definitely work safe.
Yeah!..I was a little concerned!..I know 2 pack paint is nasty stuff, wasn't so sure about powder coat, but either way the dust can't be good for you...Great job!!
Larry, it's truly such a joy to see you "living the dream" by blending your profession with your passion. And look - in the process you've even managed to score your dream car! You truly are an inspiration to both detailers and common folk alike.
Wow. Thank you for the behind the scenes. The work they do is 10 times better than what I have experienced in the UK from the 4 different refurbishers that I have used. The clarity and evenness of finish is astounding. Another great video. Thanks!
It amazes me the level of professionalism and attention to detail you get when a camera is recording. This applies to any business not just the auto industry.
I was considering powder coating my oem rims to a high gloss black, but seeing how beautiful they look after just having the paint stripped and the suggestion they offer to get that look is more tempting.
Perfect timing Larry, Thank You. A few days ago my wife came home from store with watery eyes. She snicked a rim on the Mercedes...Hope I can find this level of quality in my area.
I really enjoy watching people do what at least appears to be quality work. So many hacks out there just turning out crap. I am sure they stay busy... quality is so hard to find. Nice job!!
Thank you so much for this video Larry.. I curbed and bent 2 of my OEM Mustang wheels, I wanted to replace them, turns out they're $1,200 EACH.. LOL.. I found some places that claim to repair wheels and leave them "like new" but I wasn't sure if that was possible to even repair them, after seeing this video I'm much more confident in the process.
As always another AWESOME VIDEO I have learned so much from your videos. Thank you Larry for taking the time out of your days to help us the people of TH-cam LAND.
Fascinating!! It's always interesting to see the precision and expertise that goes into the different aspects of engineering and techniques of a product.
Looking forward to the next video Larry mentioned but I already have his aerator and Frothe and it worked great on my trip to the Tail of the Dragon a couple weeks ago!
I don’t care if it’s 1am and I’m just about to fall asleep, as soon as I get a notification that Larry has uploaded a new video, I turn on my 55” 4K smart tv, hit TH-cam and watch his video in 1080p 60fps. Always great content. Any idea on when you’re going to do a video about pressure washers?
I’m a small shop owner thanks for the masking tape tip. I have issues with some Checy wheels and Nissan wheels. Even with. A plastic duck head it still has issues thanks
Enjoyed the video. I just scuffed my rim and ofcourse knowing makes me crazy. So i must fix it or replace it so can you give a location in nyc or Yonkers or any place in the 5 boughs . Please Thank you.
I doubt the heat cycles are good for the wheel. But it would be interesting to see that since curb damage often is on the lip. If you plan to paint them you can use metal bondo.
@@volundrfrey896 I don't see a reason why the heat would be a problem, the wheels are formed under immense heat. I imagine you would just need to temper it afterwards and have a nice evenly stressed structure again. The powdercoat oven being 400 degrees probably does that anyway.
@@billybobjoe198 It can create stress, a welding arc is a lot hotter than that oven. But it might be fine, I'm not an expert on subject, however I would think twice before welding.
@@billybobjoe198 TIG welding is hot. Hot enough in fact to break down the oxide layer and the base metal. So you create a heat affected zone around the weld which can change the structure of the alloy local to the weld repair. You would also need to know what alloy was used when the rim was cast in order to select the most appropriate filler rod. 'A nice evenly stressed structure again' would be extremely difficult to achieve. Weld repairs to alloy rims does work in some cases but there are limitations of course.
Thanks friend. I got rim rash from hitting a curb at 10 mph. Made a sound like I hit a metal rod because they are steel rims. Impact made the car jolt back and forth. Drives fine.. no veering or noise. I should be fine to go then right? This stress is annoying, I wish I never hit that curb lol
That powder coat finish is amazing! Does anybody know of a place like this in California? Every place I’ve Yelp’d has pictures of finished rims with orange peel.
another great video by the master i am going to do some curb rash repair on my alloy rims my self just the outer edge will sand lightly and paint. would like to use a little filler dont no what kind of filler to use any ideas thanks dan
I was very curious about this process. I think I will have my wheels repaired this way. I was hesitant before but now I think this is the way to go, especially to get the most durable finish. Thanks for the upload and share Larry!
Hey Larry. Do smells tend to hide in areas people don’t think about, and do you recommend or sell a product for keeping a car smelling decent? Do they reuse the abrasive plastic material?
Very interesting! Two of my GTI's wheels have sustained rim rash and it drives me nuts. But I have a question regarding the wide use of high gloss exterior plastic finishes. My car's sunroof surround was badly scratched, I think by a car wash, is there any repair process for this kind of damage?
The title is misleading. Expecting to see the rim repair work and its not shown. Only thing on video is stripping of paint and applying of paint and of course, cleaning. At no moment do you see how to fix damage to the rim, a repair technique is briefly mentioned at 3:03.
Excellent - good tip regarding doing your own wheels and the grade of paper to use and the polish...mine are kerbed and need sorting out. A pandemic will provide the time, just need to decide when to do it. Thanks for your informative info as ever. Be safe.
They don't show it, but once the tire has been placed on rim completely (back and then front sides), they'd removed the tape. Then air up tire to pop bead into place.
Larry, just wondering why did you get a set of stock wheels for track when you could have gone for something lighter and possible cheaper? Since it was for the track, looks shouldn't matter right?
I just had this happen today at the tire shop after getting tires they hid the damaged rims on the passenger side and pulled the car up front running I'm glad I seen this video I'm not even going to argue with the owner what goes around comes around
Quite nice job but what about teperature in the oven and aluminium? This can change the structure of the material and it's features. I am repairing and painting wheels aswell but no with the powdercoating method, just sipmple "wet painting". Once i had customer who had powdercoated wheels and after this proces his wheels were total garbage. It used to be very srong wheels but after some time in the oven the strength was gone and wheels were very easy to kick or bend.

Still scared for you guys, but I must say, your work is excellent.
Where are these brothers located?....
Excellent finish great shop

Just rewatched this one. So good to see the pride they take in their work.

Couldn't agree more. Couple months down the line £200/300 later, paint flakes off.
Though initially looks good.
Very disappointing.
I always get excited when I see a new Ammo NYC video.
It amazes me the level of professionalism and attention to detail you get when a camera is recording. This applies to any business not just the auto industry.
Looks like an excellent wheel shop. Love seeing shops that care about their work and the customer's property. So hard to find!!!
Great video as always larry. You're literally my hero. I thought i was the only one extremely particular about detailing. Thanks
This is just so therapeutic. I can watch all day long... Thanks for sharing!!
What should I look for in a repair shop to ensure I'm getting a quality repair like shown in this video?
Bump
bump x2
Is this a new camera, Larry? Video quality is insanely good on this one.. so awesome..
I was considering powder coating my oem rims to a high gloss black, but seeing how beautiful they look after just having the paint stripped and the suggestion they offer to get that look is more tempting.
Could you show how he repaired the machine cut rims?
yes! e46 m3 here. It's a super fear curbing my mint OEM 19s
andrew smith yeah is there anything else you can do ?
@@KRBY555 only other option would be to build it up and machine it back down

I recently curbed 2 of my C3 corvette wheels and it was neat to see what process they’ll go through if I get them fixed.
The R8 looks killer with the track wheels and tires!
Man...that strip tank...it's like friggin "dip" from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. lol That thing is a hit man's body disposal DREAM!!
Forgot about the “dip” til now lmao
Glad to see these guys mask the rim mounting face and stud holes before powder-coating. Pros!
Awesome video. Had my wheels done not to long ago with powder coating. It is fascinating to see the processes of how things are done.
I click the like button as soon as the page loads. Why? Because I know whatever Larry posts is going to be extreme, amazing, educational, fun.
Great video! Best one out there to show the process. Thanks for uploading!

Sigrafix what style mustang wheels?
Great video that gave me an appreciation for the work and cost of doing this. The wheel looks great.
Your the best content on you tube, Larry. Thank you for sharing your passion with us. It is greatly appreciated.
So then how do they properly fix chewed up machined wheels? They said what not to do, but didn't say what to do.
Great video Larry. Now I know where the wheels are going when the shop says they are sending them out. Thank you!

Although I was hoping to see how they fix the severely damaged wheels.
but, how do they repair the lip we "chunks" are missing?
Kent Hall aluminum wheels are tig welded to fill in the chunk and then they go through the same process you saw here
@@sdisbro18 + putting it on a lathe or something similar to cut the welded on material.
Was thinking the same, that’s the only reason I watched it and the only thing shown was paint stripping sanding and painting
@@JayGee6996 haha same here
I would have tossed it, I wouldn't repair a wheel with that big chunk out of it it may be a liability if something went wrong
So what do they do when the lip is damaged? TIG weld new material and machine it down?
yeah, I wish they would explain more/tell us

Man, makes me wonder. I've got a set of HREs I sent back back for refinishing, and they consider a wheel .037 out of round 'damaged beyond repair'.
What material can you use to cover screws when powder coating? Not a wheel what I am trying to powder coat, but would be very useful.
