How To Camp for FREE: Dispersed Camping and boondocking with Campskunk

  • Camping fees are skyrocketing. It’s common to pay $30 a night at state parks, $50 at commercial campgrounds, and $100 at resort-style campgrounds. Many of us think there is a better way. A free way, in fact.
We sit down with our friend Campskunk, a fulltime RVer and a regular reporter on our RVLifestyle.com blog. And Campskunk tells us how to camp free, or if you must pay, how to camp for a very low cost. He reveals his secrets in our interview

As a new comer to RV camping, I seek out all the great information I can find. I thank you for all I've been able to learn through your work. I enjoyed this interview and loved the scenery in the background. In connection with boondocking, I'd like to learn more about how long you are able stay in boondocking site before you would have to refill and empty your water and waste and, if you are always boondocking, where do you go to fill your water tanks and empty the holding tanks. Thanks for being so helpful.

Another great interview. Class Bs are great for nomadic vacations, but I've learned to stay in one place longer. Through your travels, if you come across somebody who likes to set up for weeks at a time, I'm always interested in seeing how they make themselves at home. Happy Travels.

A very interesting interview. Yes, I would like to see more of them. This topic and the issues surrounding them , freedom camping V staying in paid camp sites are universal and not limited to the States. Apart from dealing with wild animals, I could easily be listening to a fellow camper from my own country giving advise. In New Zealand where I live, I struggle to justify paying some of the fees charged by some camp sites who charge per person not per vehicle. It is unfortunate that currently these fees discourage mostly young foreign campers in non self contained vehicles to freedom camp and to unfortunately leave a mess behind which give all freedom campers a bad rap. Happily I belong to a Motor-home/caravan association that has many camp sites all over the country, maintained by local club members for the exclusive use of club members that are secure, close to amenities and cost $3 per person per night.

That was a terrific interview that seemed like a chat between two long-time friends. I love the tone and common sense advice. I was waiting to see what was said about security as so many of the forums have these touchy and often heated discussions about firearms and self-defense. As Canadians we just don't even think about firearms, so it all seems a little overly-aggressive or something. Knowing so many fine Americans as we do it didn't fit the image I have of the average US person. Anyway, it's great information and I really appreciate your videos!

Nice job with your interview of Campskunk, Mike. I accept that the "Trailer Park" (RV park) aspect is a part of RVing. But to not be able to get to relatively secluded camping locations, More Often Than Not, would put a dagger in my RV interest. This video has woken up my interest again after viewing posts from RVers who explain the downside to the RV lifestyle. That would be the RV park for me. The dispersement sites you both discussed would be the reason to embark on RVing in my case. Thanks so much for this post and more like it please.

Campskumk told the story of a bear that ate a watermelon from somebody camp, then had to be destroyed! Bears are incredibly smart. If they are rewarded with an easy meal one time from a camper or fisherman, they will be back somewhere or some day. Please, Please use bear proof containers or Yeti like containers for your food and use the bear proof dumpsters and keep the doors latched! The irresponsible campers are to blame for the destroyed bear, or it may be relocated where it will have to fight to establish a new territory.

We’ve been stuck in sand and mud, and needed to be towed out. This was in campgrounds. So we learned that our class B is no match for these conditions. Something to keep in mind when boondocking.

We've been forest camping off and on for 16 years now, and (knock on wood) haven't got stuck yet. We travel in a 24-ft Class C; but we also spent extra to get it converted to 4-wheel drive. And, for good measure, we carry a set of tire chains year-round -- just in case. You still want to use common sense selecting a site; and also keep a close eye on the weather forecasts. But hopefully, with these kinds of precautions it should at least minimize the chances of getting stuck.

Another thing about bears I used to live near Cherokee N. C They had signs along the road saying don’t feed the bears There is a reason for that .People will start feeding the bears and there a lot of bears on the side of the road coming into Cherokee from Maggie Valley up through Soco Gap. When they run out of food the bears are still hungry and will try to get into the people’s cars .One bear even ripped up somebody’s convertible top on their car trying to get in

Can you repeat the free parking, overnight like at Walmart? I stayed on and off at Trukking Restaurant and Truck Stop in Redcliff, Alberta and then moved over to Walmart. It was the closing time and opening time of Walmart that was hard with no toilet on board. They closed at 11pm and opened at 7am That was on the other side of Medicine Hat, Alberta. I would like to buddy up with another small homemade camper through Canada with my 2 caged pets and same without my 2 caged pets and head over the border. I know about the blood pressure goes down once I leave the City.
