- The unthinkable is here. Fed by up home prices and a lack of support, the homeless are now just creating their own communities. I explored such a camp on Maui.

I'm a huge fan of your channel. This Maui trip makes me sad. I live in the Boston area, but like to vacation in Hawaii. I prefer Waikiki Beach, but then I've visited Maui a few times and never saw this much poverty/homelessness. I visited before the tragic fires in Lahaina.
@@MichaelMilligan-wb8ty NOT A SIDE SHOW - INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW.
The fastest growing group of homeless is the very elderly. Their /social /security checks didn't keep pace with inflation so they cannot afford rents anywhere. Didn't FDR promise we'd never see homeless old people on our streets again?
Ukraine comes first apparently.
@@billding7073 , we can do BOTH. We can help defend the freedom of Ukraine AND provide housing for our elderly. The ultra rich are simply not being taxed enough.
I lay this problem on state and county governments, not the federal government. Basic shelter is a HUMAN RIGHT, and local jurisdictions need to raise enough tax money to get the homeless off the streets and provide safe housing.
I am a free market person and not a socialist. But for a free market to survive, the basic human needs of a society need to be met. Otherwise, you're just going to invite an eventual revolution.
Yes but the outlandish cost of living has surpassed the Social Security benefit rates. Those rates need to be increased by a lot for Seniors to stay in their homes. The measly COLA raises don't begin to keep up with the true costs of today.
Another politician who didn’t follow through instead stole the money.

I live in a bigger city and a doctor and his wife bought a huge piece of land. Their idea was to build tiny homes on it for the homeless. They would rotate others through as folks moved. The city stopped all plans because they couldn’t get enough tax money off of it. They put roadblocks at every turn. The doctor finally gave up and is selling the land. Now we are back to encampments that look like this. It’s a shame!
That is really messed up on the part of the city. It should be front page news.
That happens all over the place when people try to help OUR AMERICAN homeless! Our govt has made it illegal to help our own yet give free money, shelter, food, health care, cars, phones to ILLEGALS!!! Make me sick!

Most of us are only a disaster or two away from facing homelessness.
This is extremely true.
Most people live pay check to paycheck.
@@idontlikecomputers-q8l even most of us who don't are never really all that far away from ending up in that spiral. My wife and I both make six figures. We decided to go for a second child. Ended up with twins! Unfortunately, one of them had some serious medical problems and special needs right off the bat. Even with insurance, our savings were gone within months. Had another emergency happened, such as a car dying, a needed home repair, etc., we would have been sucked right into the spiral that a lot of people can never get out of, as debts compound and the pit gets ever deeper.
I support the homeless one hundred percent (as long as they are not on my property...). its vile what is being done to us. we are slaves just to survive month to month now most of us. im not homeless but im being ripped off in every way and barely make it
You have your own property!
if you have it
. share it
You don't own nothing.. stop paying property taxes and see what happens 😊
Only reason i dont support the homeless is the mess they leave behind. I was born in washington state and lived in oregon for 8 years they set up tents on the sidewalk. But i get fined for camping in a campsite in the middle of no were for not getting a permit.
My grandpa always said "its one thing to be poor, its another thing to be a poor slob"
It’s so depressing how humanity and society are going backwards. So many great cities are now landfills and shops are closing and homeless are crapping on the sidewalk.
Well, stores refuse to be decent and let them use the restrooms, so what are they supposed to do? You can’t just stop all physiological bodily functions permanently. 🤷🏻♂️ The gov’t refuses to do anything, even though we all pay taxes, so I can’t really fault them for 💩 on the sidewalk. I’ve been homeless sleeping in my car and half the time businesses turn _me_ away from using their restrooms just because they perceive me as a homeless degenerate based on how I look, even though I have 2 bachelor’s degrees and a job.
Mmk
Yeah nothing says backwards like build skyscrapers that destroy half a hectare of land just to make. Get real with yourself, humanity is declining because of its greed people much like you. You think living like this is unfavorable because you think like someone with money those that don’t understand what life is, and that’s survival. What’s so wrong with living a nomadic life to you, not all homeless just defecate on the streets.
Is this the future of our America??
Future???? Present.
You're going to see a total breakdown of society, people will stop paying taxes..why would they?
That’s entirely up to you. If you want to do drugs or just not deal with trying to work and pay bills then this could be you. It’s not Americas fault
Under Biden yes

You really get into the nitty gritty on your channel! Wow. Good reporting, Nick.
I don't understand why people that are homeless are such mess makers..I mean, I have been homeless but neat and tidy. Just cause one is poor, doesn't mean they have to be a frickin' slob
Its the drugs, they go pretty much hand in hand.
some people like it messy and stuff everywhere makes it very hard to find anything of value they may have stashed somewhere
That has the ring of truth to it. However, on the other hand, a very high percentage are just crazy or intoxicated all the time@moonshinefuel
There is a lot of mental illness going on there. One of the symptoms is clutter/hoarding behaviors
Mental disorder rates among homeless are in incredibly high rates
What surprises me is that the government hasn’t been doing anything much for decades.
😂Are you kidding? The government has pissed away billions of taxpayer dollars on this. Remember one thing, you can’t make people do right. You can’t make addicts stop doing drugs. 😂California gives them drugs now, there’s no hope.

The pig in the enclosure is one of the ways these Hawaiians are creating fertile land, using the pig's feces to fertilize the very pen where it lives. After a period, the walls are taken down, erected somewhere near; this way, in time you cam create fertile land to plant fruit trees and other Hawaiian ffod trees to provide organic food for themselves. The smell of these pig pens, leftover food, fed to the piga, is their organic/natural way to create fertile ground to sustain them.
They did this during the Great Depression too. They were called Hoovervilles.
The most haunting is, that, there is nobody, while you see traces someone is dwelling there... human dystopia in an enchanted landscape... we see that all the time in your video's, and yes, how safe is it to venture & prowl in places like that ?

It’s when they can eat or shop.
It’s hot and they like to find shade.
This group sounds like they work well together, but they often steal from one another. You don’t want people to know where your stuff is. Sometimes people follow you at night, too.
