Ep. 117: Cheap Truly Unlimited Internet for Your RV | camping tips tricks how-to

  • Working from the road, we needed truly unlimited, uncapped, unthrottled mobile hotspot data to be able to work from our RV. We found a cheap pre-paid plan without any limitations whatsoever, and we share it with you on this episode of Grand Adventure!
    UPDATE 4/13/2021:
    Yes, we're still using this setup every day.
    Visible has now re-enabled referral codes. Use our code BcPHP to get a discount for yourself, and kick a discount back to us.
    Visible no longer sells the $19 ZTE phone featured in the video; however, you may use any phone that Visible now sells, or any cheap new/used phone that's on their compatibility list: www.visible.com/shop/compatib...
    WHAT ABOUT THE 5Mbps SPEED LIMIT?
    As many commenters have pointed out, Visible has since re-instituted a speed limit of 5 Mbps down/up on Mobile Hotspot connections. That's proven to be plenty fast for us to work via VPN, stream television in HD, etc. That limitation also only applies to Mobile Hotspot connections; the phone's speed itself is still unrestricted. Still, there is a way around that limitation, too.
    For that, you'll need a router where you can change your outbound TTL. Here's the one we've started using: amzn.to/3uOhbY4 . Yes, that's more expensive than most of the other travel routers, but it's very full featured and the ability to remove the 5 Mbps speed limit is worth the extra money, as far as we're concerned.
    Here are the very simple instructions on changing the outbound TTL to 65: forum.gl-inet.com/t/change-ou...
    By changing it to 65, the network believes that the data requests are coming from the phone, rather than from hotspot, and you'll therefore get hotspot at full speed.
    Whatever router you use, it must have "Range Extender" or "Bridge" mode capability. As noted in other comments, the HooToo router originally discussed in this video went permanently out of stock shortly after this video gained in popularity. If you don't mind the 5 Mbps speed limit, our favorite lower-cost alternative adds 802.11ac support that the original HooToo router didn't have: amzn.to/2n7xVMH . Here's one from TP-Link that's nearly the same as the original HooToo: amzn.to/2n8EoqG .
    WHAT ABOUT PARTY PAY?
    Drop your monthly service to as little as $25/month using the new Party Pay. Find a Party to join here: / visiblepartypay
    CONNECTION INSTRUCTIONS
    If you're having trouble connecting and configuring everything, here are some simple instructions that we've provided other commenters.
    1. Activate the phone, and turn on the phone's hotspot feature. If you bought Android, realize that on Android mobile hotspot is in the settings that you access by swiping down from the top of the screen.
    2. Boot up the nano router.
    3. Grab another device, other than your Visible phone that's running hotspot. It can be another mobile device or PC, your choice, but IT HAS TO BE ANOTHER DEVICE. Connect that device's WiFi to the router's SSID. Check your router's manual, or even maybe the back of the router for the router's SSID and password. Open a web browser and visit:
    * 10.10.10.254 for HooToo routers
    * tplinkwifi.net for TP-Link (if you can't connect to the TP link admin site, clear your cache or use a different browser)
    * 192.168.8.1 for GL.iNet
    * Check your router's documentation for others
    4. Now that you're in the router's administrator configuration interface, go into network settings for the router and choose the Visible phone's SSID to connect to.
    5. Voila! You're done. The second device or PC, and every other device that you connect to the router's SSID, now has Internet.

    I have been researching the internet problem for over a year. We had previously used AT&T with an iPhone which did not work half of the time when camping. Everything I looked at was limited or overpriced for what we need. Compounding the shopping problem is the fact that so many people give bias reviews due to sponsors and free stuff. Thanks to your review, I ordered the Visible service (same day) and the $20 dollar phone ( with $20 off the first months service the phone was free). I figured since there was no contract it was impossible to be disappointed. The phone arrived very quickly, tech support was responsive and the service has been flawless. It's only been a week but so far I am overwhelmed by the value of this product.

    Hello Grand Adventure. Saw this video just before getting our very first RV. We were stressed about what to do about Internet. Getting quotes for $200 a month and being told I need equipment that costs hundreds each and having to get a 2 year agreement. After seeing this video, we tried it. Used your friend code and got $35 off the first month. Purchased a ZTE A7 for $69 and a GL-iNet 300M mini smart router for $28. Now only $40 month with no contract. This works great!!! Wifi while driving! Wifi in the trailer! Watching Netflix and using social media on 2 phones at the same time and no issues. FaceTimed family. Thank you so much for the info!!!

    Stumbled on this video quite by chance. Followed up with a variety of reviews of both the mentioned router(s) and Visible wireless service. With so little hardware cost and no contracts, I really had nothing to lose. Got a Visible account and bought a dedicated Visible ZTE phone and picked up a TP Link Nano Router. 2 shipping days later and we are streaming to 2 televisions and connecting at least 6 other devices - phones, tablets, laptops. Decent download speeds for a variety of file types. All is well. Unbelievably pleased so far. If this holds out, we will save bunch AND can pretty much count on serviceable unlimited connectivity virtually anywhere we go! Thanks so much for sharing this information!

    I’ve spent months looking for affordable unlimited Wifi for a 6 week road trip so that my son could do his online homeschool work on the road. We wouldn’t be able to road trip if he couldn’t do his schoolwork on the road. It was Devine intervention that this video showed up in my TH-cam recommended videos. Since Amazon didn’t have the HooTo in the video I got the HooToo that is also a power bank. It all worked great!!! I got the R2 phone. Cheap and worked great. I had no problem with the devices or service. In fact it was a better Wi-Fi than the free motel Wi-Fi. I loved just putting the HooToo and R2 and cables in a dedicated pocket in my backpack so that we always had Wi-Fi hiking and the HooToo was an emergency power source for the R2 and my phone if needed. Absolutely the best, most helpful video I’ve seen. Thank you! I’d never heard of Visible! It made our road trip possible. Oh, and I never had any streaming problems. Both my son and I would watch video off it at the same time and no problems.

      1. That HooToo router quickly sold out after this video came out. We upgraded ourselves to the TP-Link listed in the video description and like it better anyway.
      2. Visible did away with referral codes; at the same time, they dropped the first month's service to $25. You can keep every month at $25 with their new Party Pay system.
      3. The cheap ZTE phone is likewise no longer available, but you can use any cheap used phone you get of eBay as long as it's on their compatibility list.

      @ohmcintyre2067 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Levy, with the Visible phone I get one bar inside, sometimes two outside and it is still significantly faster than my DSL. The phone offers only the option of a physical tether (which I did with my desktop computer and it worked fine) or Bluetooth connection which I did with my iPad (slower, but also fine). It does not offer the option of a WiFi hotspot (just Bluetooth) so I couldn’t connect to my Tv ( for some reason it doesn’t offer the option of screen mirroring either) so I have ordered the HooToo router which I believe will provide the WiFi connection to the TV. ( if not, I’ll get a USB-c to HDMI cable). I think this will work fine for my moderate internet needs. I’ve already cancelled the iPad data plan and if the nano router works out, I’ll cancel the DSL, too.

    MUCH appreciated. I am now set up and have a recommendation. In paragraph 3 above, add a statement about if you can't connect to the TP link admin site, clear your cache or use a different browser. I spent quite a while fighting this one. Works great now though!

      Glad to hear that it's working well for you! This setup has been invaluable to us on the road. And thanks for your suggestion, I've added it to the video description.
