    Definitely a lot of amazing photographs, but I cannot help but feel a bit dissapointed that most of them are very heavily edited and/or composite.
    I think it is probably because you can easily make a picture seem 'different' and 'unique', since making something look out of the ordinary straight out of the camera is not easy when most scenes have already been tried thousands of times before.

      This is exactly the thought I had and so I went to the comments to see if anyone else agreed. As a photojournalist I just don't get why people are so impressed with that kind of photography. Obviously I have ethics to follow and do not edit my images, other than very slight adjustments. Also I shoot in JPEG always, so it's not like my images can even be edited much. I prefer to see images that are not composites or photoshopped and that are not staged.

    • @abmo32
      @abmo32 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@patricksmith2553 some minor correcting is fine and even before digital cameras they did cut cardboards to influence exposure on different spots of the image, they cropped and were creative in the lab in any way they could. However, using graphics software to alter the picture to a different piece of art is not photography anymore. I don't mind it, as long as they call it by the name, digital art or whatever.
      Just one more thing, you shoot in Jpeg? why? you are just limitng yourself and let the camera do the post processing for you. That's a misbelief, raw has nothing to do with overediting, it just allows me to correct certain things that - as I said - where even edited during analog days.

    • @patricksmith2553
      @patricksmith2553 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@@abmo32 I know the benefits of shooting raw. I'm actually a Getty Images staff photographer. I've been a photojournalist for 17 years now and JPEG is just faster and easier for me. I often shoot 2,000 plus images at sporting events and hundreds of images at breaking news events. I have to be able to upload the images quickly and since I have so much experience...I get it right in camera. I have had images published in every major newspaper and pretty much every magazine over the years. So if my JPEG's are good enough for Sports Illustrated or NewsWeek, then they are good enough for me and they save me a lot of time. I do not get paid extra for editing images and for the reasons listed above, JPEG works for me.

    • @abmo32
      @abmo32 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@patricksmith2553 oh ok, I actually was genuinely interessted in that. I understand, it takes too much time if you shoot that quantity and it is not worth it. I know it can be quite annoying to take a ton of photos in raw when you are back home at the computer. However, you can set your camera to RAW + jpeg, and if needed you still have the option to the raw editing.
      One more question, how did you find your way to sports photography? I'd love to do that :D

      I think the format of these “critique the community” videos favors heavily edited photos. For the most part we are looking at a single photograph from a photographer for a few seconds... and absent of any context from how and why the photo was taken or the photographer’s larger body of work. This favors images that really “pop” and convey an immediate feeling - and heavily edited photos have a big advantage here.
      That’s not necessarily a bad thing. If you’re a photographer trying to make a name for yourself I think you can learn a lot from these images. And I also think processing is an area where there is a lot of innovation still happening, compared to straight photography where most subjects have been done to death and it’s hard to stand out.
      My favorite photographer on TH-cam is probably Thomas Heaton. His photos are pretty straightforward for the most part, and I think he would have trouble standing out in a critique the community format like this. But he does such a good job documenting his travels and presenting his photographs that they really do come across as special. In the same vein I think Fstoppers also deserve a lot of credit for their excellent Photographing the World series... in addition to videos like this which can be a quick and easy source of inspiration.

    • @JohnJBloomfield
      @JohnJBloomfield 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mattchupicchu1797 Probably but so many people, me included, watch TH-cam on a large smart TV and can't see the comments/description etc. until later. It seems like a massive aberration that a mention of the photographers name isn't even given. Bad enough when Joe Public show images without credit but you'd hope for something a bit more than in the small print from a photographer centric community.
