I love this series. But I have feedback.
It makes no sense to have the best image first. Now we all know what the highest rated is. If the first is 3.2 then my hopes to get a stellar looking image goes blank.
And also. Please get a pen for your surface. I would LOVE to see you scribble on the images as if it was a plastic surgeons canvas. It would be easier to see what you're talking about, like highlight certain areas and stuff.
Love the series! Seen all of them. Keep it up!

Good idea on the pen. They could set the surface to screen record and match up the times with the recording so they could cut to it as they scribble.

I've watched lots of these critiques and i can't take them serious anymore. I like Mike Kelly, he has a trained eye and i love how he justifies his arguments and he understands the point of the photos. But Patrick and Lee, no matter the genre of photography they critique with an amature mindset of:"is this photo good enough for your portfolio?" Which is plain wrong. I've seen Lee and Patrick's critique on minimalistic potography, or black and white or wildlife and they proved they have no idea of the concepts behind the genres. And when they don't understand them they use lame technical excuses about color or subject or framing. They should get out of their bubble and ask questions according to the genres they critique. For example fine art: in what way does this photo speak to me? Would i put it on my wall? Or real estate photography: does this picture make me want to buy that house? Etc. Best critique came from Pye Jirsa on wedding photography. His arguments were on point, his feedback was constructive and i will never forget how he croped that photo taken in motion and made it perfect just with a simple crop. It blew my mind. They should invite profesionals in the genres they critique because Lee and Patrick, no offense, are amatures compared to Mike and Pye and i learned nothing from them.

@fstoppers for the therapy pool, the bars on the right side of the frame are actually a lounging platform. Bubbles come up between the bars while you lay on it. It is called a thalassotherapy or hydrotherapy pool. I didn't take the picture, and your comments about the colors are definitely on point, but I think the half underwater shot is a neat way to show the features of the pool.

I thought the 5 at 16:40 was an insane shot. I've watched tons of these episodes and feel like I've developed a good eye for what's amazing and what ist't (even if I couldn't take/process 90% of the shots myself). So it was one of the rare times I was like: definitely getting a 5. To see Patrick give it a 3 was quite a shock tbh.
I think it would be really nice to include a "5 star image" for each of these episodes at the end, to see what a world class shot can look like.
Also great to see Patrick back!

Patrick has good logic and is able to articulate his feelings well. He also had good restraint when it comes to criticism.
Mike is really good with his points on what makes the picture good and what could be better. Although, it may not always be possible to do some things that he suggests in all locations - sometimes, a room is just what it is (like that white apartment with the poster bed). What can you do there? But it helps with understanding what to consider when you are gathering your work for a portfolio.

  • @RealHankShill

The amount of images in here that do not have correct verticals, or straight lines, combined with the chromatic aberration, and many of them have distortion, makes me think people really need to learn the basics before trying to go wild with editing. Also a lot of "smoke damage" around many of the windows caused by HDR or pushing the highlights and shadows too far.

With the 2nd image, I think the tablecloths are actually a cream colour. If you look, they have a 2nd cloth underneath which is actually white. It definitely does make the whole room too yellow though.

One thing i did notice on the first image - the swimmer looks completly still. If it had some motion blurr, or better yet, catching the moment, as he jumps in the pool, that could have been way more impressive of a shot. At the current state, the first thought came to my mind - he looks too close to being drowned. Still though, super impressive shot, way more over the top interior, than i have ever been to, yet.

  • @MrSaloso

    Hey guys,
I think you should think about the raitingsystem in one way.
First I like your idea of the portfoliomatters. I just think you never ever use the one star rating.
Perhaps it would be interesting if you have like two steps of "needs work before it hits your portfolio"
Because sometimes its like you are saying "just remove one thing and go like 2 meters to the right and its a three star image" and on the otherside sometimes you say "do like 20 things and then perhaps you can take it in your portfolio". In my opinion you should forget about the snapshotimages or make them a zero and differentiate more on the photos which need some work.
Would be more interesting but its just my personal feeling.
And its great to have you back patrick
Go on with the good content!

The keystoning on the "movie poster" could have been easily fixed. And, it is over saturated, moon's too big: The drone vertical would be rotated in post to straighten the roof line with the crop."The Henry" building has too much negative space on the right that detracts. I'd have cropped some of it out, moving the building right in the frame: At 58:00 Good shot, but there's a little yellow bush on the right margin that's distracting. It could have been zapped out. And, I think I may have zapped out the leaf or whatever it is at center bottom. Other than that I like it.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned this but, regarding the 17th image and the "wet" brickwork, I've noticed a few properties recently that intentionally treat their walkways/drives/etc with some kind of solution to make them have a perpetual gloss. The blue in the brick is kind of distracting though.

    • @RealHankShill
      @RealHankShill 5 ปีที่แล้ว

None of that is needed lol. Lightroom and photoshop both, which 99% of RE photographers use, make it very easy to fix your lines, as well as fix your chromatic aberration. The amount of images in here without straight lines and with chromatic aberration shocks me. People need to learn the basics before they go crazy with the editing.

That way a less seasoned photographer/editor has a higher chance of getting better from your tutorials, vs potentially randomly selecting a number that happens to be from a more seasoned pro

Critique the photo, not the architecture. It's possible to have a great photo of an ugly house.

I'm surprised you guys gave the 1st image a 4. Even though the architecture itself is amazing, the staging in that room is terrible and the general execution of the photo just doesn't feel polished.

Why is that guy in the 1st image swimming like a dead corpse? It really takes me out of the image.. 🙇
