Randy was intimidated by Eddie. He knew he wasn't up to speed when it came to being the same league as Eddie. And I have to say, the song choices this guy picked for Eddie were weak.
Thomas Whitmore I don’t think he was intimidated at all, they had different playing styles. Eddie has some flashy techniques but as far as composition goes they weren’t in the same league, Randy’s work on Blizzard and Diary was better. Well to me anyways.
@@rosskrause3926 When it comes to Randy I like Flying High, the fast licks and tapping in that are similar to the Tooth and Nail from Dokken which comes out a little later. Eddie, Randy, and George were so alike yet so unique. It would be crazy to see them jam together back in the day

Both amazing! People that say Eddie is all about tapping are clueless! Eddie wrote some amazing riffs and his rythm playing is among the best ever! I always say Randy was a college professor and Eddie was a mad scientist. Randy was awesome, but Eddie's unorthodox style of playing is so hard to recreate!
Yeah, RR was great for his live solos and metal tone but Eddie made great sounds on albums and famous fast solos in only 15/30 seconds.. jump, beat it and more.. Randy took 5 minutes to complete a solo..
Two great masters, no doubt. But it's just amazing to think that even though Randy has been long gone His Riffs and Solos are still IN and could even compete with any modern day guitar player.
eddie clearly won, because randy still wasn't as good with quiet riot as he would later become with ozzy osbourne. by that time randy had already studied eddie's style and started to do his own thing. that was actually a smart thing to do because eddie was light years ahead and really couldn't be touched. even if you managed to play his stuff, you'd just be a clone. randy rhoads was a van halen fan, but he soon realised that you simply can't compete with eddie because by the time you copied him he was already steps ahead of you. th-cam.com/video/NvBsPN75i4Y/w-d-xo.html
His tone and dimes tones were just damn near uncoppiable. They were so unique and different I loved Early EVH before van haggar and switching to peavey amps
Randy's solo at the end of Suicide Solution live from the Randy Rhoads tribute album is in my opinion, more impressive than Eruption. That being said, they were both masters of their craft taken too soon.
That’s a fine opinion to think we all hear things differently and like different things but eruption was so impressive because there was nothing like that at all when that came out. The techniques used in it where not common or even invented by Eddie. Also just that raw loud style. That’s the song that changed everything forever. Every rocker talks about the first time they heard that. Also just a plus that was literally sections of eddies warm up and he developed the melody’s over time of doing them over and over. Before his first record I might add. He never even planned to record it or play it live. That to me is the coolest part. He didn’t try to write it and he wasn’t improvising live because this was all new shit. Innovation. He played with these new techniques he discovered or created until he started hearing it in his head and writing music with them. So natural. Eruptions origins might be the only reason Eddie could solo like he could so early. That to me is why eruption is so impressive. It’s lost some of it’s hype over the years since it came out but it’s history and impact are just on another level
Interesting comparison. I remember reading an article many years ago where Ozzy talked about leaving Sabbath in part because Van Halen had opened for them and he felt like they were getting blown off the stage every night by the young energetic band.
Having seen that tour, I witnessed that, first-hand. Yes, they blew them off the stage when I saw them in 78. But, I went there, expecting them to do that, so it wasn't a surprise at all.
EVH didn't wanna play with RR! There's a story where RR went to EVH but ignored intentionally by EVH. Eruption is no.doubt a game.changer and yes, EVH was a genius. But as a whole, like looking at their album and their guiter solo and rhythm... Randy was bigger than Eddy. RR idolized Eddy, but what did EVH do to RR? He treated him like a joke.and that's his big.mistake.
Eddie changed the game but Randy is my main influence. Nobody writes or sounds like Randy. The classical influence with the chord choices for his rhythms is just mind blowing. Still love Eddie. Both are phenomenal in there own right.
I've been a huge fan of both as far back as I can remember. It's very difficult for me to compare Randy and Eddie. Two different style guitarists. Only if I were forced to choose, would I choose Randy Rhoads. Both inspired me more than any others to pick up a guitar back in 1985. Thank you both for sharing your gift with the world.
My favorite guitarist, Randy Rhoads - the guitar wizard virtuoso who seamlessly incorporated classical modes with metal heaviness. To me, Randy was more structured, compositionally sophisticated, and melodic than Eddie. His solos are masterfully written, whereas EVH’s are more free-flowing. Eddie had nice rhythm, technique, and tone (which mostly held him up). But Randy was far more creative, played with feel at times, and mixed things up (weaving between melodic and shred on a dime). Eddie was an experience to hear for the first time; but literally almost everyone says Randy was “jaw-dropping”. He did things that were so lateral and unexpected that they almost put you in a state of disbelief. And years later, way after his young death, that creativity can still impress you - listen after listen. Randy inspired me 1,000,000% to play guitar. Eddie merely impressed me with his tone and chaotic guitar playing. And while Eddie set “the sound” for early shred, I think Randy developed it for the future. Many young people still find Randy to be inspirational and inspiring. “Crazy Train” is played everywhere still - basketball games, political protests in the streets, etc. Overall, I think Randy’s legacy will continue to grow, as people are still as impressed and blown away by his creativity and sound now as they were then. EVH, unfortunately, seems to be going the route of the forgotten. Imo, Rhoads will be immortalized with Hendrix in a few decades - a pillar of guitar with an absolutely cemented status in rock and metal history. And I am glad he’s being inducted into “The Hall” soon. He deserves it 1,000%. (And like Tom Morello said, Randy is basically the Robert Johnson of metal - a guy with a small catalogue who has been ridiculously influential.)
@John Hill - Best description of Randy & EVH's playing I've ever read, plus 100% correct!!! Thank you for such an exceptionally accurate & well written comment! All the best

Eddie changed music forever! He started a "movement" that saved hard rock in the late 70's! Love Randy, but Eddie was a game changer! There are plenty of guitar virtuoso's like Yngwie etc, but Eddie took it to the next level!
I hate to dis agree cause they both are Great in there own way. Randy had his life cut short and he made classics only having a handful of albums to make music on. Who knows what kind of music he be making til he was 65 like Eddie was if I'm not mistaken
I think Randy's clean playing far outstrips Eddies. Dee...Goodbye to Romance...that's some lovely clean guitar playing. I might give the riffage to Eddie, but Randy was a better lead guitarist. Not that Eddie was a slouch, but Randy's lead work actually made more sense, from a theoretical POV. On the flip side, Randy's riffs are pretty awesome too.
A genius?!? Have you heard Dee? Rhoads was in another level! Before his death, he told Ozzy he was gonna stay for one more album so he can continue his study of music. He knew many more instruments than just guitar, and it was a music teacher in many other instruments, that my friend is a genius.
@@mikenuzzo3323 Randy was gonna leave the band and go to college, he wanted to continue expanding his knowledge about music and to teach like always did. Did you know that Randy would look for guitar instructors from every city Ozzy had a show? Always learning, but many of the instructors said that Randy would end up teaching them meaning he surpassed others. You have to digest the kind of person he was, months before he died the band separate for a bit because they were all stress out, Randy took the opportunity to get some wisdom tooth pulled out, and that's how his body was identify. There is more to Randy than just Ozzy.
Going year by year (I'm including the QR albums in my thoughts on this), I feel like Randy was improving at a faster rate than Eddie was. Eddie is pretty consistent from VH1 to Fair warning. Going from QR1 to Diary, Randy evolves a ton. I love both players a lot though.
Oh, heck. From QR2 to Blizzard was a huge step. With QR, his playing was pretty straightforward rock. With Blizzard, it was like...wow. First time I heard a track from that album, I went out and got it, then the EP, then Diary. Loved Randy's playing.
That’s fair and could be true in some aspects but I feel like a big part of that is once Eddie came out Randy was influenced by him. Then when he met up with Ozzy he had so much more to play with technical wise in his writing. Not trying to discredit Randy in anyway I respect his art but Randy was not any where close to Eddie during quit riot. Eddie change guitar forever and the music lover Randy was he wanted to learn it and understand it. Anyone would. Not trying to hate in anyway but from old interviews of Randy back in the day he talks about seeing Eddie and how blown anyway he was. Tried to ask him how he did some things. And then He didn’t like that he had to start using some of his fills or tricks or flash as Randy called it to get attention. He defiantly came into his own and stopped but that’s where I get my source from. He adapted a lot from Eddie into his own as so many did. Eddie dropped the nuke with Van Halen one. After that you can’t really re nuke the music world playing the same style. But he dropped heavy bombs until balance. Consistent is the right word tho cause he continued writing insane music and innovating with beautiful guitar work his whole life. Both are great tho!
Randy Is iconic and it’s sad that he was taken away so abruptly. But Eddie is truly something unbelievable. One of if not the greatest guitar player ever. R.I.P Eddie. R.I.P Randy.
@@im_diversum You don't think Eddie got better over the years? He evolved tremendously over the years. And then he came back full circle in 2015 and went back to playing the ripping stuff from the old days flawlessly once again. Plus....Eddie was a big influence on Randy. His old girlfriend said the first time Randy saw Eddie he was "devastated" at seeing how great Eddie was, even then.
@@im_diversum False. That shows you don't know his music. Compare "Pleasure Dome" or "Me Wise Magic" or "Dreams" to the songs off the first two albums. They're clearly Eddie, but they're clearly different.
Eddie is such a legend! I love everything he's done in his life, but he cannot touch the very few years Randy has left us on this planet. Randy was THE God of all things guitar. Randy Rhoads wins hands down.

Randy was the real innovator. He created neoclassical guitar playing and an entire subgenre of metal devoted to it. Honestly, Eddie's style flamed out towards the end of the 80's. Randy's style is still going.
If you are still comparing Eddie to Randy, after Randy has been gone for more than 30 years. That tells you how unbelievably great Randy was. Randy made that good of a name for himself with only two albums. Eddie had decades. Randy Rhoads was THE best.
Eddie made a name for himself after the first album! Zakk Wylde the guy that was paid to play Randy Rhoads songs every night said Eddie could have just released Eruption and been a legend. Zakk has Eddie as his #1. I have to agree with Zakk.
Perfectly said! Randy has 2 albuns to go off, I would like to compare Eruption to the Live Solo Randy plays half way through Suicide Solution on the Tribute album. Again, thus is opinion and everyone deserves there own, but your right if 30years after we lost this incredibly talented young man we are still debating him vs. Eddie...than I wouldn't want to be EVH How do you compete with a Dead Legend? How cone we don't see EVH vs. Malmstein or Satriani or Skolnick or even Zakk (BTW it is well known that Zakk Wylde Honors Randy WAY more than Eddie, Zakk plays 2 different Polka Dot V's from Sandoval, I don't see him playing any of Eddies guitars...hm) Randy by a landslide
@@Kantack1 I think it's because RR and EVH were California rivals. I had heard that they bumped into each other in a record store and were holding the other's album.
Nothing I’ve heard from Eddie has ever made chills go down my spine. Every time I hear the first solo from Mr. Crowley it feels like my spine is freezing and I’m being exposed to something too good for humans to be blessed to hear. RIP Randy
One of my favorite guitar solos of all time. So much feel, emotion and heart in that solo that tugs at you immensely. And a solo that could literally carry on forever......
EVH As amazing as Randy was, I wish we could have seen him stay and write more brilliant songs... Edward Van Halen wasn't just a player, he was a force of nature. It could be argued that without him, a whole generation of our favorite musicians may have ceased to exist. Beyond the point, I'm certain they adored each other's playing.
I would have to go with Eddie, for the shear fact people could not figure out some parts.he was playing was in fact a guitar. The tones were just crazy it's hard to explain unless you were there in the beginning.
Spiritualistic Randy is just average tier compared with other guitarists of the era. EVH is the guitar God of the 20th century. Randy was just part of the game, but Eddie reinvented the entire thing. In fact, in an interview, he even admits to copying some of Eddie’s techniques.
Spiritualistic as I said in another comment, Eruption was nothing more than a warm up lick that a producer happened to hear, and wanted Eddie to record. That mere warm up lick that wasn’t even written on purpose became far more famous than anything Randy Rhoades ever wrote.
JT 5150 average tier? That’s not how I remember it his guitar playing influenced an entire generation of metal musicians...blizzard of Ozz and diary of a madman were life changing albums. Eddie was awesome too but it’s a different genre...didn’t hit me the same as Randy.
Spiritualistic lmao when you try to claim you owned someone yourself 😂 Van Halen I album sales (Eruption): 10,000,000 as of 1996. Billboard peak: #19 Blizzard of Ozz album sales (Crazy Train): 6,000,000 as of 2019. Billboard peak: #21 OWNED. Good try.
Spiritualistic hard rock, “radio friendly”, even 50s 60s rock, rock n roll, is vastly more popular than metal, and mainstream pop is vastly more popular than anyone of those for that matter...this was never about genre...so, not sure where you were headed with that; regardless, the album including Eruption sold almost twice as many copies in roughly the same amount of time as the album containing Crazy Train, since I had to spell that out for you...one thing that is for sure is, you’ve tried to turn this into a 6th grade name-calling battle because your logic failed you and there’s no direction for you to backtrack. However, the only place you need to turn is around and drag away what’s left of your dignity. Maybe even delete your comments before someone reads them lol
I love Randy, he was a great guitarist. But... Randy was classically trained, and there was a consensus among the band that Randy (including Ozzy, and Sharron) planned on playing for a couple more years. King Edward on the other hand; has never ha a guitar lesson and does not read music. EVH learned to play by listening to Clapton during the Cream years. Eddie changed EVERYTHING about Rock Guitar. The 1978 debut album also saved Rock music from Disco and Punk. Edward invented ways to get the sounds out off his head. He couldn’t afford a peddle board, so he perfected a way to get those sounds with just the guitar and his hands. Again, gotta love Randy... RIP.
I am thankful that both Randy and Eddie were both alive at the same time as me. No looking to find stuff, I lived it with 'em. RIP brothers! Thanks for the tunes.
They're both great, they're both legends and they both deserve all the accolades thrown at them, but Randy is the only one that made music that moved me. Eddie was exciting and changed guitar, but Randy laid a framework for metal music that people are still trying to complete today. My biggest knock on Eddie is that, to me, he never really evolved beyond those first two albums. He's put out a lot of great songs, riffs and solos, but always seemed stuck in place as a guitarist. Randy showed more growth as a musician from Quiet Riot I to Diary of a Madman than most rock/metal guitarists show in a lifetime, but he also has the benefit of being forever gold. He didn't have the opportunity to release anything bad.
Miguel, I think both Randy and Eddie would have loved this video! Thank you, brother, for showing us what it would probably be like for them to do something like this.
I am fortunate enough to have lived in LA in 70s and 80s and have seen both guitarist many times even Randy with Quiet Riot at the Starwood. The bottom line is you can't compare top players it comes down to preference. They were and are both trailblazers in their own right. You really have to have seen both live to have gotten the full affect.
Randy was a legend with Beautiful n Good melody then came Edward with his own style of playing. Both are good but my vote goes to Edward... He's everything we need in music... ✌️
I feel that very few guitar players can sound like Eddie and capture his feel and the quirkiness and vibe in his playing. Eddie wins, there is no contest in my opinion. What I love about Randy however is that he never tried to sound like Eddie.
Something Different there isn’t really a hype for Randy, it’s just isolated to the viewers on this video I think, who saw the keyword “Randy Rhoades” In the grand scheme of music in general, a Randy Rhoades Jackson guitar would be mistaken for just another random guitar. Most people born in the 90s or later probably don’t even know who Randy is. But there is no one who is involved in any way with guitar that does not know, or won’t immediately recognize the EVH Frankenstein guitar.
@@s1iznc1d34 sometimes I feel like Eddie's brain is wired differently, he plays like an alien would or something. Everything he does is so unique to him and there is just too much happening for most people to sound like him. Not to mention is tone. Nobody sounded like that when he came out. Steve Vai and Zakk Wylde are a couple others that have crafted a distinctive sound.
Agreed. Love Rhoads, Miguel does a real good job on Randy's parts. Randy plays with a conventional classical/jazz type of left hand pattern that make his songs easier to figure out, even if it takes time. With Randy, it's about the notes. With Eddie, it's about his fingers. His songs are easy to play in a basic way, but his notes are spongy, hard to duplicate exactly. In a time before TH-cam, no one could figure out the beginning of "Mean Street", unless you actually went to see him live. Eddie's 100% right when he says he chases tone, and doesn't really worry about the rest of it. Sure Rhoads didn't have much time, but he also didn't have time for a downhill period where you run out of ideas, either.
I’ve stirred more on the randy side. The epic orchestration and sweeping gothic solos are like a Tolkien novel. They take you deep into the depths where you fight balrogs, die, and are born again. But cannot deny EVH had that vibe. Like a hunter S thompson novel. That damn vibe. Unmatched. Love them both.

No guitar ever understood Harmony like Randy Rhoads you can hear it in the Riffs not even Eddie understands Harmony like Randy....I stand by my statement. We are discussing a guy that put out 2 albums, 2 albums that are so great that he is put up against Eddie Van Halen, that's how great Randy Rhoads is/was, I'll take Blizzard and Diary over the first 2 Van Halen albums anyday.....Eddie is one of the greatest Rock and Roll guitarist, Randy IS the greatest Metal guitarist....and that's my meaningless opinion, cause after all, the best of anything is just a matter of someone's opinion
Jimi Fritz - and here I was thinking the exact opposite! From the first two songs that Sequeira sampled, and with nearly every pairing after that, I was left with the very strong impression that EVH’s greatest gift wasn’t in fret tapping, though he was brilliant at it, but in building melodic solos with wonderfully harmonizing double taps and arpeggios laced throughout his riffs. Just my opinion, of course.
I agree with a lot of people, we teens of the 80’s, and everyone since then, wins. Not just because of what Randy and Eddie did themselves, but what both of them influenced.

Listen to Diary of a madman or Tonight randy rhodes is better
Tristan you're God damn right!
eruption is just tapping tbh it should be this much praised
Eruption, first and foremost, is tone no one else could touch.
Sabbath over halen all day I don’t care who blew who.

EVH didn't wanna play with RR! There's a story where RR went to EVH but ignored intentionally by EVH.
Eruption is no.doubt a game.changer and yes, EVH was a genius.

👍😉🤘
“classical”? Eruption is a “cover” of a famous 19 century violin virtuoso’s, Fritz Kreisler, pieces.
🤘😉🤘
👍😉🤘
Tom Morello was so enamored with RR that he named his first born son after him.

Randy Rhoads!!!!! The best in all history!
Spiritualistic lmao when you try to claim you owned someone yourself 😂
Van Halen I album sales (Eruption): 10,000,000 as of 1996. Billboard peak: #19
Blizzard of Ozz album sales (Crazy Train): 6,000,000 as of 2019. Billboard peak: #21
OWNED.
Eddie hands down don’t compare anyone to him. It’s disrespectful.

Something Different there isn’t really a hype for Randy, it’s just isolated to the viewers on this video I think, who saw the keyword “Randy Rhoades”
In the grand scheme of music in general, a Randy Rhoades Jackson guitar would be mistaken for just another random guitar.
Sloppy hahahahahaha
@@saadalam03 bad day for those who can read lol
🤘randy Rhoads 🖤🦇🤘
Randy my hero ..visited his grave and music store where he taught ...loved him
I love them both, and many more. Great video man!
Thanks a lot man!
Regards from Portugal!
👍😉🤘
Miguel Sequeira i just realized you created this video a year ago. You are some kind of sacerdote.
Hahaha... 🤣🤣🤣
Regards from Portugal! 👍😉🤘
Last I heard, Eddie could sure use our thoughts, prayers, and/or positive energy. He is pretty under the weather these days.
@@jasondankenbring1710 well, he has suffered from mouth cancer and throat cancer for a while. He has been traveling to Germany for some treatment that is not available in the US.
I saw a somewhat recent pic of him that really made me sad. In the picture, he is kneeling by a motorcycle. He looks drained of, well, everything.
I wish him all the best
Rip🙏
Well, under the dirt now...
His classical background. Rhoads was a better composer , Eddie a better technician IMO.
@@29slowjoe Love Randy, but the Roth era VH are all brilliant compositions, with incredible arrangements, Mean Streets, Beautiful Girls etc
True but Randy admired Eddie and according by his teammates, he was a little intimidated by him.
@@29slowjoe all evh was good at was tapping. If you check out Music is when he literally states that eruption is easy to play.
No need to compare, let's just be thankful that they both existed and brightened so many people's lives.
Respect for both.
But Randy Rhoads is magnific!!!
👍😉🤘
I agree with a lot of people, we teens of the 80’s, and everyone since then, wins. Not just because of what Randy and Eddie did themselves, but what both of them influenced.
\m/ ;) \m/
This is like comparing Cliff Burton with Steve Harris
This comment's pretty underrated
Or anyone Vs Geddy Lee
Never, Steve Harris is a God walking among mortals....
@@gerardosanchez1813 yeah but Ciff was better. The problem was that he died to you g but he will had lived more....
Well put!
You don’t compare these two, both are just out of this world. RIP...
