this is very good. Very beautiful very precious and good. I appreciate your comment about litter. I wish we could shout a protest about it so loud that it could really make a difference - no more litter in any waterway worldwide -- a goal to achieve. thanks
Wonderful shots of the Grebe displays, Mike! I really appreciate your excellent bird videos because they are always filled with great tips about how to get better shots, and include your own excellent images.
Hi Mike, just found your channel via the foxes in Essex, which I thoroughly enjoyed like this video. These birds are beautiful, love their plumage shades. I have yet to see youngsters so I will have to have a look in Greenwich park, I live not far from there. Have now subscribed.
Another excellent and enjoyable Saturday morning breakfast watch. I’m not sure how you manage to keep coming up with something new each week, but thankfully you do!
Great video and information! I spotted one earlier in Walsall Arboretum but was chasing my son on his bike so didn't have time to get out the camera. Will pop back and see if there are more.
I’m sat at home this morning with my back playing up ☹️. This is making me itch to get out. I may have to evaluate my kit soon, my 500/4 is feeling like an anvil these days. An A1/200-600 combo has my interest, but you and Andy Rouse are doing great things with the Oly set-up. I’ve never filmed/seen the dance, got close once in a local hide but they got disturbed and stopped.
Great Grebe footage and images Mike. Glad I'm not the only one who leaves a stool (or other gear) behind when in a rush to get that perfect shot! Happy birding :-)
Excellent knowledge sharing, thank you. It's good to have an insight into the best places to go and reasons why, and details leading up to the dance. Great stuff!
Fantastic shots there Mike. I photograph them at Carr Mill Dam near St Helens, where they quite regularly display at this time of year. It's the best spot in the North West as far as I'm aware. Only downside is that they don't often come in as close as you'd like, even though the body of water they frequent is fairly small.
Ever looked at Digiscoping Mike? I'm becoming very tempted and wonder if you've any thoughts or experience of Scopes with DSLRs? Love your videos wish I'd access to an estate such as yours with the wildlife!
Another lovely video and really good info on the head disks and the dismount! Definitely my favourite water bird, looking forward to seeing the first Humbugs on my local patch. You move well for an older chap 👍
Great photos and videos. It”s so nice to see them so close. Lovely well presented bird it seems they had a good haircut already. Thank you so much 🙏👍🤩🌹!
Awesome! Thanks a lot for yet another excellent video. Beyond the quality of the footage and pictures, I am always impressed by your ability to find or engineer situations where birds are so approachable. We don't have great crested grebes over here but this is a timely reminder to go and check out the western and clark's grebe chicks.
Great video and pics as always. Many thanks for all your tips on getting closer to wildlife. I have always seen your name credited for images in books and magazines since the early 90’s when my interest in wildlife photography really took off. 👍🏻
Hi, I did not say I was 89 only that is was good for an 89 year old. I assumed nobody would think I was 89, but unfortunately for me many did. Worrying.
@@rolandrick I did not take offence. In the film I said it as a joke and in a deliberately confusing way. When I say it is worrying that people think I might be 89 it is still with humour.
Mike, my hearing has been damaged and I am not sure I heard you correctly. Did you say in this video that you were 89 years old? If I misheard you please accept my sincere apologies, as I assumed you were about 70 years old at the very most. I find your videos and knowledge of birds and their habits outstanding. I am also very impressed with your videoing capabilities. Keep up the good work. Alun
Hi Alun, No. I said that was not bad for an 89 year old. I did not say I was 89. I thought I was exaggerating enough that people would know it was not true, but sadly not. Many assumed I was 89. Worrying for me.
Beautiful content as always!! Thank you for making and sharing these!! Btw, how do you shoot stills and video in the same session? Do you capture stills and at that time let go of opportunity to capture video and vice a versa? Or do you capture video all the time and in between get screen grabs from video?
Love GCG not so tame in parks near me but a pair are currently nest building close to the path at my local nature reserve.I have got some reasonable video so far but I have taken your advice and tipped in a load of face masks in the hope they put one on to win a competition !! Only joking, but have you noticed those face diapers are everywhere !! Agh!!!!!
@@MikeLaneFRPS What is your best set up for sound recording of the birds with your video, I am looking the Olympus LS-P4 but I do not think it is the best , what do you use and did you make a video about this?
@@photozen8398 I have Rode videomic, but it does tend to record the sound behind the bird as well as the bird. Wind noise, traffic etc. More often than not I dub the sound on afterwards. Even with singing birds. I have a video about video at th-cam.com/video/d-MxYmSjlFQ/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, Mike..................well done !!
Thanks, Mike. Always a huge pleasure.
Super Video, Mike! Great Information, footage - both stills and video and as always tongue in cheek too :)

Fantastic action footage and photographs . Plenty of great tips as usual on your page.

Hi Mike you have inspired me to get some video of the Great crested grebes displaying and I will get the slow mo on the G9 going. Stay safe
Fascinating; inspiring; informative. Thank you
Great video and tips as usual Mike
Look forward to your video every Saturday Mike, and didn't know you were that old mate and thank you for your time in making these videos, stay safe.
I love your work, always great. Thanks 👍
Nice and informative vdeo. Was fun to come in from a morning by the local lake photographing these birds and see your video about the same birds.

They can be attracted by throwing nest material ( dry reeds) into the water.
Gorgeous species. I'm not as old as you Mike but already running is something I haven't done for a long time.
Amazing video Mike 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I don't know if your wonderful videos or your excellent physical condition surprise me more. Congratulations on both of you.
Great shots Mike, it took me 3 years to get the weed dance, I always just missed it or they were a long way away.
Great video Mike. Keep well mate 👍
Was this at Barston Lakes I was there this morning photographing grebes and heron?
Some of it, especially the bits talking to camera.
Nice video +photography Sir would like to know what’s setting u use ?
You could try this one. th-cam.com/video/LJ2z2VrDFYo/w-d-xo.html
A good turn of pace for an 89 year old🙂
Beautiful birds.
Do you utilise ND filter while making videos? If so, which one?
No I don't, but I wish they were built in to the camera like on my Sony camcorder. I may buy one at some point.
superb
6:05, what, 89? You’re in better shape than many teenagers addicted to smartphones and tablets. 💪👏🙌

In Germany, Hessen crested grebes are much more shy than those in England. Only with a hide you are able to capture them from a close distance.

Do you capture stills and at that time let go of opportunity to capture video and vice a versa? Or do you capture video all the time and in between get screen grabs from video?
These days I shoot video first and if the subject is still there take stills afterwards. I have done the occasional screen grab for YT.

Anyone know the significance of the red dot on the baby's head?
Do you shoot the 4K or 1080 with the em1x? and what are your ISO used in the videos here?
4k mostly, but for slow motion it drops to HD. With no Exif data on video I can't say what the ISO was and each clip could be different.
