    Very interesting video. We have dippers in the middle of the village. I have never seen them not close to the village creek and even when flying they are close to the water.

    Hi I went last week to see and photo the dippers and what a treat I got building there nest going up and down the streem I loved every minute of it and will go again to see them. Yes they were very team and nothing bothered them. Love the video.

    Great footage of this lovely birds! I think the majority of modern photographers don't realise with what we struggled on film, 50 ISO Fuji Velvia, shooting kingfishers with 1/4 of a second, the costs it brought it with, etc. I'm glad I learned it the hard way and often laugh inside if I hear someone complain about bad light when shooting with 6400 ISO.

    What a great collection of footage of dippers, and because I'm Norwegian and the white-throated dipper is Norway's national bird they have a special place in my heart.
    In Norway we call them: "fossekall" or "fossekallen" (the latter is definite form singular). I'm not sure about the etymology. However, I'm confident about the first part of the name: "foss". Which literally means "waterfall" in Norwegian.
    The second part "kall" or "kallen" is far more ambiguous and can mean several things ("call/calling (for/to someone/something)", "an old man", "a priest", "a husband", "a call (from god)", etc..
    However, I have always interpreted "kall" in "fossekall" as "to call" or "calling" because it's most often found singing beautifully in rapid streams or small waterfalls, and because it makes most sense. Based on this I've believe the correct interpretation the name "fossekallen" as something along: "The calling from the waterfall".
    Please forgive me. I find it very difficult to translate names like this.
    The timestamps of my favourite pictures: 8:28, 8:40, 8:46, 8:52, and of course 10:00.
    Beautiful pictures! Thank you!

    Fantastic footage and images of the Dipper. It was an inspiration to watch. The Dipper or "Fossekall" in Norwegian is a bird I want to "work" with to get descent images and footage of it.

    Very, very interesting as usual. Thank you!
    And indeed: the best scenes in nature occur within 90 seconds after you decided to pack your gear. So always wait that extra 10 minutes ;-)

    Dippers are my absolute favourite bird, there’s a few at the riverside in my hometown but they are becoming increasingly harder to find now.

    Wow, the last picture! Let´s admit it, we do it for ourselves. Spending crazy amounts of time somewhere in the wild taking pictures of birs...I just spent some 6 hours (again:) photographing kingfishers at their nesting site and let me tell you there´s no substitue for time spent. Just as you prove with the last photo...

    Great vid and just one of the best birds to watch and photograph. I've been working on two dipper sites for images for my associate panel - it's been a three year labour of love trying to get the whole breeding cycle from displaying to fledging. What has amazed me about the first site is the number of fish one of the adults brings in (at least a third of all feeds).

    Mike Lane. Prior to moving back to Olympus, I owned a Sony A9, Sony A7R4 and Sony 200 - 600mm. You will not be disappointed with the lens, it is brilliant. The internal zoom makes all the difference in handling over the 100 - 400mm G Master (which I also owned). I imagine the A1 will be a stunning bit of kit.

    Thanks Mike, great shot at the end and like you say worth waiting that extra time. I photographed a dipper several years ago in Norfolk and photographers came and went but I stayed until the light had gone. I didn’t get anything special but it was nice to have the place to myself and try lots of different shots. I felt very privileged to be there with the bird on my own. I’m sure you know what I mean. On the camera front I have just changed from my 1DX2 to the R5 and have no regrets. Image and video quality is superb.

    Dippers got to be high up on my list too. We have a very tame couple here in Bristol. That A1 sure is a beast, but coming from Sony myself (A7RIV and the 200-600) I can almost guarantee the ergonomics are going to take time getting used to after using the EM1X. Weight too but for video I assume you’ll be on a tripod most of the time. I’m expectant to see the canon R3, Sony lens catalog although improving, lacks the huge second hand market Canon and Nikon have, of course they’ve been in the game for a fraction of the time so not a criticism but just a fact. Still wouldn’t sell my m43 gear though, can’t think of a better system for travelling and handheld photography at least for now. Exciting times for photography with technology that would have looked like science fiction not so long ago. If only money could be printed at home 😅

    Beautiful shots. The White-throated Dipper is even prettier than my local American Dipper in Maple Ridge, BC. They are truly amazing birds. I have been filming American Dippers feeding their nesting chicks salmon. I even got some underwater shots...check it out on my channel if you are interested! Cheers, Damon

    Hi Mike
    Me again. Lovely sequences and stills. Agree about the 1/15th for best water effect - been photographing dippers here on the Ludlow Teme for 50 years now, still at it today!
    BTW at 4:00 et sequ, do you think that dipper is anting? it certainly looks that way to me and it is not consuming the insects it is picking up, but dressing its feathers it seems. What do think?

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possible. I can't see anything on the end of the bill even slowed down, but they do appear to peck at something.

    Canon R5 plus 100-500 gives the light weight and image quality you seek but I have no idea about the slo-mo capabilities as I don't shoot video. I have often wondered about Sony myself but as the 200-600 lens is quite "cheap" and not in the Gmaster series I wondered if the image quality would be good enough against the Oly 300mmf4 or serious Canons.

    Thank you for this video on dippers. The American woodcock has an endearing motion when it moves about. Quite different from the dippers. The eyes of the dippers have a flash of white. Is it when they blink? Your mention of acquiring a Sony A1 with a 200 to 600mm lens made me wonder if it wasnt for the video mostly? I’ve been on the waiting list for Olympus’s newest len. I’ve been waiting since orders were taken but now I’ve heard three times of delay. I’m starting to have some misgivings and seeing your comment heightened them. The weight and size is a concern. I watch You tubers with Sony gear used for birding have bazookas. Kinda makes me wonder if it is a tripod centric solution.

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is when they blink. It is the slow motion video 120 fps, 4K with AF that is the main draw of the A1.

      I have not found them very approachable in the Brecon area. I went to a place in Wales just after making the film and there were none present.

    Nice video! Would you say they are somewhat of a common bird in the Uk? As far as I know, they are quite rare winter visitors only to the Netherlands

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are common on fast flowing streams which tend to be in the west and north of the U.K.
