I love the tips you impart and the little snippets of info such as how finches squidge the berries and the thrushes take whole ones. I learn so much from your videos. The bullfinch photos from a different time are absolutely stunning. And I love the robin with the berry in his bill, too. Thank you for sharing!

Great vid Mike. Been doing bullfinches myself but using a seed feeder set up. Among the feeders I have up (sunflower hearts, peanuts and fat balls) I have a small table I made for the bullies (1ft square) which is about 2ft above the ground (about the height of the dead thistles which still have seed in the heads) and covered with mixed seed. Had a female visiting regularly within a week or so but it took four weeks for a male to get the courage to come in. Now both birds are regular, two f one m, but they're buggers for not landing on my props. Funnily enough my favourite shots are of the birds feeding on the thistle seed as they're the photos that look most natural. Such lovely birds to photograph.

A few years ago we moved into a temporary house whilst waiting for a house to come on the market in the area we wanted to be. The garden was 6mx4m. There we had 2 pairs of Bullfinches regularly seen along with Chaffinch, Greenfinch, Goldfinch, Siskin, Blue, Great, Coal and Long Tail Tits, Wren, Robin, Blackbird, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Nuthatch were daily visitors along with things like Reed Bunting, Redpoll and Redwings on occasion.
Fast forward a few years and I now have an acre of garden and struggle to get in most of these birds, so people, put out the right food and if they’re around they’ll come. Another great video Mike
No matter how many of your videos i may have watched, there are always new ideas that inspire me and tips that I appreciate to get. Congratulations; once more.

That one was really inspiring for me.
I suddenly realized that I could use a bird proof net (fairly stiff to keep birds from getting entangled) that protects berries and fruit to protect a Rowan tree from marauding birds.
I have heard of people freezing Rowan berries to tempt visiting birds in the winter.
I also realize that I want a Canon R5 or R6 for BIF.

Another excellent video Mike, I love how you sort problems out. By the way well done at Arden's best of season competition on Tuesday. Finishing 1st and 2nd was a terrific achievement given the quality in that club, your image of the Pelicans was stunning. I was happy to get one in the top 10 ???
You could also photograph birds with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III and of course your camera settings

Nice job! Bullfinch is called "punatulkku" in finnish. It means red-something, I don't know what "tulkku" means, propably nothing, haha.
Up in North East Sweden normally lots of Rowan Berries. Starlings had them early this year. Normally its the Waxwings who feed on these but they are going without this year

I did not, but I have heard of other photographers doing so. The berries I use come from gardens, industrail estates and car parks where they are common all winter.

"Bullfinch" - I love the name. Even though I don't see a great resemblance to a bull.
We call them "Dompap" here in Danmark. The word comes from the German "Dompfaff" whis is a title within the Catholic church. The Germans also call the bird a "Blutfink" = Bloodfinch, so maybe that's where the English name comes from?

Ah, I have bullfinches that nested right outside my house this year, but so far I was unable to take any decent shot. I didn't want to disturb the nest itself so I set up some water pond and feeding station nearby. They did land on the branch I planned for a shot - once or twice - but not when I was in the hide (I just saw it out the window). I hope they will get used to the area and maybe I will get lucky one day. Btw, the young ones left the nest precisely today morning.

Hey John from NYC, this is GBF from upstate NY. I've been trying to get that perfect picture of a Male cardinal too. I've got lots of images of both males and females, but that perfect image still eludes me. The best I've got so far is when I put a Christmas tree on my deck and tied pine cones with peanut butter and seeds on its bows. The birds came!! Just waiting for that perfect moment. It'll happen.

Is there a section a section in the hide that you were using for shooting low to the ground?i see there is a pop up hole at half way up is there a place to put your camera through at the bottom?

Sorry Ron, I have no idea what pictures were in my F panel. I was young and had hair it was so long ago.
Did you use the Pro Capture to get the bird hovering or what setting did you use if not?
No it was not procapture. It was 1/2500th at F7.1 at 6400 iso.
@@MikeLaneFRPS I noticed the 6400 iso on my em1x casts weird colors, how do you deal with this ISO and still get those beautiful clean images?
@@photozen8398 I do not get weird colours. I am fussy about the light I shoot in and wait for the right light. I am not much of a Photoshop man, but I expect it could be corrected.

"The easy way"? Well, I'd be bored out of my scull sitting for hours in a hide. And if I got nothing, I'd probably swear to never do it again.
See, what you have to understand is that birds are evil. I have two conures in the house I live to serve, so trust me, I know.
