Just fixed a Camry with the exact same symptoms. There was a small amount of rust keeping the sensor from being mounted flush, literally off by 1/16th. That was enough of an airgap for the signal to drop to 0MPH a split second before the other sensors causing the ABS to kick in on slow stops.
We call the reluctor ring an "exciter ring" here in the HGV world ( UK). Common fault on Meritor trailer disc brake Exciter rings. They rot out and you get a wheel speed drop out. Great video.
hi paul another great video. i sure dont miss the corrosion from northern life.all data should try working on some of these older and corroded cars to come up with labor time. God bless all you guys that fix the rust buckets.
Perfect video as always and I really mean it, it's not just to write something... For someone who read this: there are other really great channels but this one is perfect. Thorough but yet clear explanations from someone who knows how to pass the knowledge, it's not just knowledge that's important, it's nothing if it can not be passed... camera; sound; pase, just everything. Try to find a single flaw in any of videos on this channel. As a repair videos this channel is among the best, but for learnning there is no match to this one. Sorry for my English, I'm not native speaker.
Yeah that looks pretty much like my tone rings.. Intermittent abs activation and abs light at high speeds. Thanks for a bit of confirmation on where to start the research:)
how r u doing paul great info knowlage u have been uploading being mechanic for years I really appreciate the time and effort you put in your videos for us here in uk and world wide god bless and sorry about the cracked screen cover if you get time maybe more uk / European case studies especially common rail diesel no starts not much done on youtube in this area from the heart big thanks fellow mechanic nayeem
Great analysis! Boy, that tone ring is sure rusted! I agree, changing the speed sensor isn't going to help - you need a new tone ring. I'd check all four. The four graphs weren't super clean like they should be. My guess is that all four tone rings are rusted.
Finally fixed......I though it was the brakes....Changed pads, rotors, checked wheelhub, tie rods, cv joint....The shops dont know it....The car will stop by himself, like someone was applying the brakes.........This thing was broke....Replaced and its running normal again....Wooo
A customer brought in a 2001 Ford Explorer to our shop, and she complained that it had a grinding noise that started at around 10 mph as she came to a stop. No ABS codes or lights were set. We found out that one of the front ABS sensors signals were weak, so we replaced both front wheel hubs and the problem was fixed.
The outer piece on the screen that cracked and what you were peeling back with your finger, more than likely is the digitizer which provides the touch screen capability for the verus. Hope you find one, cheaply!
heard that his straight away, that thumping sound from the intake almost sounds like it's done a valve and is pumping air back up through the intake, although that wouldn't be intermittent. interesting stuff
Never!! put the P brake on a vehicle you don't know. Auto trans with park ,people rarely ever use them. Rust and crust...then chop and burn. Upstate NY reporting here. Trust me. Frozen wheel? Loosen the lugs about 3 turns then find a shopping mall parking lot or similar and do some low to moderate speed turns to "pop" the crust loose. Use the weight of the car and save all that unfun hammering on tires and alloy rims. Great vid Danner on ABS and why not to by a Ford. LOL. In my next life I wanna wrench in Arizona.
Danner, How I miss Pittsburgh-NOT. OK, it's 115F today and will be for the next two months but my car which is 20 years old looks brand new and is rust free. Life in Pittsburgh was much tougher. I like Phoenix.
Damn don't you know any better then putting a scan tool on the windshield! No just kidding, but now you have have me worried case I would not ever have thought that that would break the Screen Protector. I think I'm going to place a label on mine now "Don't lay on Windshield" LOL
Plz help ScannerDan my sister's 99 Lexus RX 300 has intermittent abs activation at low and high speeds. Maybe once a day every couple days days hitting the brake causes pulsing. No ABS light, no abs codes from my cheaper scanner, slight rust but all sensors look good and tone rings look good. Thx for all your videos...
Hero 4 the one with a screen on the back of it. The silver I think is what it was called? I know there was one step up from mine that shot like 240 fps for awesome slow motion videos but the screen was more important to me as that model doesn't have one.
I think I would be looking for the nearest cliff to push it over. I wouldn't be surprised if the other three tone rings were getting close to causing a problem not to mention the other problems the car has.
I hate when there's a battery problem in the middle of the diag smh. It always make other modules throw codes and inaccurate sensor voltage readings. Good vid!!!!
I had that same problem last week in my 2004 Silverado 1500.The ABS would activate rolling to a stop. The left front wheel bearing was worn out. Jacked up the truck, and the tire flopped to the side. Surprisingly, there are no stored faults.
Maybe it wasn't enough to trip the "code" that makes the fault to be recorded? The record function depends on the fault to be within the parameters given at the factory. That's why i like custom systems, you can add various faults that don't exist in the original set. True, tho, it's a pain in the ass to set such a system, and it's a costly proposition if you want quality, but for my needs i'm okay with that, saved me a lot of euros, especially with my BMW, which in my opinion has a garbage fault detection system.
In a first couple day of me working on a new shop, I broke the shop scan tool " Solus Altra". The hood on the car I was working on shuts on the top of the scan tool when I was doing some testing...imagine that.
Ya a guy at work was doing a diagnostics on a piece of machinery and set his lap top down on a conveyor belt when somebody came along and started the conveyor..The conveyor carried the laptop down the line and into a press..well you can imagine the damage...
That looks like one of those cars that once you touch one thing , every thing else needs fixed . I dropped a ultra once , got a small mark on screen . Lasted a year or so then went wacky . The snap on guy said it was the screen doing it . was about same price to fix and upgrade as it was to replace . Did i miss the engine code , or codes
I have an issue with my 2014 mustang v6 I changed both front calipers do to them sticking. I’ve changed the caliper twice!!. I also did a brake flush. They’re sticking again and every time I brake hard it sounds really bad. I’m thinking it’s the abs sensor. But I have no abs light on.
Kind of a design fail there with the screen unprotected just with those tiny four rubber feetums. Like my old design teacher said, either go all the way or don't do it at all. Considering those little legs are rubber, even in the best case scenario where the screen falls perfectly parallel to the ground, they would compress and do nothing on gravel and such. I've seen other similar devices where the entire screen has a rubber bezel around at least half a cm if not more deep.
Holy Crap Paul...I about fell out of my chair with laughter when I saw that tone (reluctor) ring.! Wonder why it doesn't work.? haha That thing was messed up!! BTW...I too think I would have had a near heart attack if my Verus hit the ground.. dang you got lucky. I noticed it was all cracked up watching the IAC repair of obviously this same car..different video, watched it before this one. keep up the hard work and look forward to your next act brother. Cheers
No. It was broken, those are smooth usually. But look how the whole area looks, i wouldn't be surprised if something got jammed in there and damaged the sensor.
Paul, how is the Scanner Danner "T Shirt project" coming along? Thanks for answering my question. P.S. What approx. mA can a computer driver withstand before it frys it? Can I get a signed T Shirt by you? Hey you should try out OTC 3631 logic probe Test light, it is very good, I know its an LED but it has NO measureable mA draw, will not register on my Fluke 87.
Paul, I know this is an unrelated question with the tone ring, but, if you had a relay in a fuse box that is 3/4 the way plugged in, and you want to test the computer driver, and hooked a test light up (150mA) with proper polarity, and touched on the proper pin underneath PLUGGED in relay, activated the component, wouldnt this overload a good computer driver because the vehicle now has 2 loads (the relay coil and test light) combined ? It would only be a proper test to test circuit with the relay UNplugged only, Is this correct? Thank you in advance.......
hi Mr danner, my 2000 dodge durango has a abs code 65 relay open , where that relay located? or there is something else ,the problem? please help, Thanh you I like and have watched your videos, cheers from ontario ca,
The relay is internal to the ABS computer. Check main powers and grounds. Pin 4 RED/DK BLU is an ignition feed (hot with key on) Pins 7 and 14 are both RED/DK GRN and are battery feeds (hot all the time) Pins 6 and 13 are grounds BLK/RED
Its funny. My pickup truck has the ABS lights on. Also, upon stopping, the ABS activates giving me a pedal that pulses. Its 5 years old and has 16,000 miles on it. The tone ring has a lot of corrosion on it. My tone ring is very tiny, unlike my Ford's. No wonder its toast. I am going to try to steel brush it to get the rust out and hope that fixes it. If not, me thinks I have to replace the hub because it doesn't look like it comes off. Its part of the hub it appears. Anyone know if one of the teeth on the tone ring is missing, will it cause ABS error codes and such? Upon sanding one ring down, it appears that one tooth just corroded away. :)
@@ScannerDanner I installed new disks after that got abs malfunctions ? Thought dirty brake fluid in pump? But changed disk to better quality abs error stopped? I noticed ring touched sensor metal flaks stuck to magnet triggering abs.
i worked with someone that had one of the things. they were a total piece of crap from what i recall. it was always broken. the older cougers that were based upon the thunderbird werent so bad but, but these things were junk
One thing I've always feared, they bring in a car to have the air in the right rear tire replaced, and while its there, the main bearing spin, the cam breaks, two Pistons blow out the side of the block, and they want to know what you did to their car!!! "It was running fine, when I drove it here"!!!!
Canadian tire has that battery pack in 3 or four good sizes and dropping that bullshit eliminator which is big and was over a hundred dollars and it’s not worth shit I’m trying to figure away to take it back I bought it cause it says good for diesels don’t do shit for my dually maybe if you have a little 3 cyl diesel

Some say don't apologize it is a sign of weakness, but I say it is a sign of character. I am sure Dennis will understand.
I agree. and Dennis was cool about it. Thanks brother

I think it's a type of screen protector.
I have a Verus Edge & it's gorilla glass so it cracks and your screen is protected. Snap-on replacement is @$56.

Hey, Paul. Will an analog wheel speed sensor produce a signal if the magnet is broken? Got this on an ase5 test question.
A broken magnet would be a weaker field, but yes, it may still produce a signal but would be especially problematic at low speeds.
Thank you, Paul. I think I answered the question correctly because I was given two signals to compare and one of them was kind of erratic.
Erratic would have been what I chose too, nice job!
