What a treat of a movie. Better than any of the movies nowadays, in 2020. They don't make em anymore like this one. The good old days, for sure. I find it amusing, how these kind of movies take place at night, after dark, and it never fails that there's always a thunder and lightening storm in these old classics, which helps set the mood for such mystery suspense movies. Love all the old 'antique' furniture, the drapes, wallpaper, the staircase, such stylish rugs and carpeting, all the rooms in such a fine mansion, and can't leave out the clothing attire as well. Great storyline, by far!
Actress Mary Carlisle was always fun to watch! Even in her early movies. She seemed to be so relaxed fun and happy with her work! I was keeping an eye out for her passing and still missed it when it first happened!!!! I hope and pray she enjoyed her whole life!!!!
She made it to 104. I wrote to her many years ago and she signed a photo for me of her in Grand Hotel and about a year before she passed away I got a Christmas card from her which I still have.
Don’t think I ever saw a movie with Hedda Hopper , only knew of her being the Hollywood Gossip . “Horror” movies used to be fun and scary until the 70’e when the blood and slasher movies came in and all they are now is blood . Some of the best movies scarred you and you never saw anyone die actually get killed.
@John Wood...actually, you should have said until the 60's...remember Psycho in 1960 and Dementia 13 in 1963 and Strait-Jacket in 1964 and the original Night of the Living Dead in 1968 among others?
Thank you for sharing. Hedda Hopper had a some what successful stage and screen career before becoming a successful gossip columnist, 1938. She was the mother of William Hopper, best known for the role of Paul Drake, on the "Perry Mason series" 09/21/57- 05/22/66 and also the father in "The Bad Seed". Regis Toomey started out as a singer, but was stopped because of throat problems. Mr. Toomey had a busy career and from 1963-1966 he was a co-star on "Burke's Law" with Gene Barry along with Gary Conway. Happy viewing from Las Vegas, NV October 01, 2018
Thank you for sharing the information on Hedda Hopper. I had no idea she was the mother of William Hopper. Have seen him in some movies from the 30's as well.
Hedda Hopper was the original poison pen. She was the hired gun for media baron William Randolph Hearst by writing hit pieces on anyone Hearst did not like and wanted ruined such as Orson Welles whose film Citizen Kane was based on Hearst.
Love these old spooky movies. They are so good to watch. No sex no blood and guts just really great acting. These old movies keep my attention. Funny and creepy too. I want to see more of these old movies.
What an amazing movie! It must have kept everyone on the edge of their seat. And the Stars that played it. Most notably recognized was the Hollywood Gossip Columnist Hedda Hopper[the one wearing the big poka dotted dress.]
The millionaire father in this comes across as a mixture of Hal Holbrook and Lionel Barrymore. Wallace Ford was quite the actor, going from this type of comedy to the role of grizzly, drunken old Pa in the 1965 film, "A Patch of Blue". Good (fun) movie all around; it didn't even matter who done it.

OMG Regis Tomey is in this. Haven't seen him in anything for ages. BTW 'In 1941, Toomey appeared in You're in the Army Now, in which Jane Wyman and he had the longest screen kiss in cinema history: 3 minutes and 5 seconds'
The film needs restoration and the acting is at times strained. But the camera work is excellent. It's clear that Cabane got his start in silent films, the most visual films ever made. Also clear that he was assistant to DW Griffith, the first person who understood that movies should move.
Hedda Hopper was a major proponent of the Hollywood blacklist and got a large number of actors and screenwriters blacklisted because of their political beliefs or perceived political beliefs.
Stage acting (think Olivier), slight holes, and entertaining. Wise racking Wallace Ford, Regis Toomey as the young hero and it was a dark and stormy night - sometimes. Thanks awfully.

I hate the way people have servants, it's one thing to pay someone to do a chore, but yo act like you own them and talk down to them, it just burns me to think someone's treated that way, I know it's not as much like that today , I could never work for a tyrant, or an asshole, guess that's why I never had great jobs.
