- Refining Mixed Media Collage: Sticking With It To The End
When you are presented with a lot of problems, do you assume that you’ve done something wrong? Well, maybe we could learn to make better choices from the start, but overall, I think that creating artwork just inherently presents constant problems to be solved. You’re not doing anything wrong, but simply engaging with the process.
Here are the things I’ve had to learn how to develop so I could stick with the process for as long as it took:
1. remaining flexible as the painting too turns I didn’t expect
2. being willing to give up things I’ve worked on so that the painting could move forward
3. sticking it out to the end and being willing for it to fail in order to have the chance of it succeeding
Video Chapters:
0:00 Introduction to the painting project and how learning to stick with the problem solving to the end is a must for artists
2:30 First layers, the general color scheme, and what I’m generating
3:51 Giving things up along the way and why it’s so important
5:30 Beginning to bring things forward so other things can move to the background
6:45 Using intense color to bring the focal points forward
7:43 Sometimes you don’t know if it’s going to come together until the very end
8:45 End product

Fabulous work of art!
Thank you so much 😀
Another GRAND piece!! love Love LOVE~!!! And it is a HUGE lesson I have learned from you ~ TO JUST KEEP GOING!! Thanks so much Marabeth!!
You are so welcome! and I’m glad you are learning that lesson too-I have to learn it over and over again!
I find these short process videos soOoo helpful! thank you for sharing it. It gave me some ideas about how to use some transparent papers I have, so Im going to get started on that now. I also wanted to say that really like how your piece turned out too.
Thanks so much, and I’m so glad it sparked some ideas about how to use some of your transparent papers. 🤗
This is SOOO beautiful! I love your choice of colors and the way you “trace” around some of the botanicals with gel medium to make it easier to tear out of the larger piece of paper. Thanks for sharing your process..…I learn something new every time I watch yur videos and classes.
I’m so glad you like it, Cindy! And that’s not gel medium, but just plain water that I’m outlining with so it tears easier.k
I love this piece. Thank you for sharing it.
Glad you like it, and thanks so much for watching!
I really love the larger leaves. Great focal point, which I think is VERY needed in collage pieces. Just fabulous! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us! 👍🙏🏻❤️🖌
You are so welcome! It’s a pleasure to share with other artists and hear about their resources as well.
Another beautiful work of art, Marabeth. Thanks for sharing the process , especially how you highlighted the main features to make them stand out. So helpful....
So happy it was helpful, Linda!
I like it! When I was new here, it took me a while to not panic when you add layers. I trust you 💯per cent now because it’s always beautiful and wondrous at the end. 💜💜💜
Not always! Sometimes you layer and it just doesn’t work out, but I’m like you and can tend to panic or be scared to layer more, but that’s always a risk in the process. I try to make myself keep doing it and learn to take that risk a little more easily each time.
@@marabethquinart Yes, you’re right about that! 🩷🩷🩷
Love the video and so glad I took your online class. In this video did you start with water color paper as your base. You are a great teacher. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! I used heavy duty mixed media paper-Strathmore 400 series. It holds up really well.
Adding the watercolor at the end to beef up the saturation of the big flower really made it pop. I enjoyed watching you make this piece, Marabeth, and am inspired to get back to painting tissue. Thanks for posting this process video.
My pleasure, Jo! And I agree, the intense color is what made the whole piece work in the end.
I learned so much from this, LOVE your work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you, love to watch your process and learn from it
So glad! And thanks for watching.
Love this video So much! Great idea painting translucent patterns on the rice paper! What sort of glue do you use to stick the collage pieces down?
I use Golden Satin Glazing Liquid-it’s really wonderful with these fragile papers.
Great work of art!
As I watch the video I can’t help but ask myself is this an art tutorial or a lesson on how to work through daily life…one decision at a time ???
Thank you for sharing
Thank you! And yes, for me, art is always an instruction on how to work through daily life…I see that you get that too. 😉
This piece is beautiful….. when doing this video I wish you would explain about the papers you use….are these all painted papers that you did? When cutting out the large pieces I wish you would explain how you are doing that without scissors. There are things that go unexplained….you ramble about the process and not the how to. I am thinking the video is a lead in to your classes. Not showing the how to. I do love your work…this piece is beautiful. I look for more on TH-cam as many are sharing their how to.
Thank you! These are all my own painted papers, and to ‘cut’ the larger pieces, I’m just making the cut line with water from my paint brush and then tearing it. The water makes tearing super easy. I do have an extensive class called “The Layered Botanical” that’s all about this process I’m using here-it’s far too much for a TH-cam video. My free videos on TH-cam are where I show the overall process and talk about my approach mentally/emotionally because that’s actually where a lot of people get hung up, so sharing that part it’s important to me and it’s what I love doing.
Curious what kind of paint you used. It’s soft and subtle. Absolutely beautiful!
Some of the papers were painted with acrylic paint, and the biggest, boldest one was done with watercolor on rice paper. Thanks for the kind words 😊
Hi Marabeth I am curious. Has your practice developed in that you are using less acrylic paint or is this just in terms of your botanical pieces? I love this painting, the colours are so soothing. Thank you ❤
Thank you Charlotte! I still use acrylics with my collage work, although I spent a number of months exploring just layering painted papers and then created a class on it called The Layered Botanical. It was a super fun exploration!
Could you please tell me what paint/paints you are to make the beautiful orange yellow & gold pieces ? Is it watercolor just mixed with water or two different colors mixed ? Mine come out too orange or too yellow .. they're not attractive at all ! I need more softness. I also can't find plain tissue paper that holds up to the paint & glue . It rips so easily . I've tried so many up to this point . Thanks ! This came out beautiful as always 😊
That main botanical figure is actually watercolor on rice paper. The rice paper soaks up the watercolor really well and it is stronger than tissue. I also find that when wanting something like tissue, the medical exam paper is more consistent and holds up better. If you’re in the U.S., you can find the medical exam paper on Amazon. Here is my supply list where the medical exam paper is, as well as the rice paper I use: www.marabethquinart.com/favorite-art-products. As far as the color on that focal point, I used watercolor, painted a layer and then let it dry before doing another layer of a slightly different color. Getting more than just one color in there is key to making it interesting.
Great video! Do you finish off with a mat medium?
I use Liquitex Satin Varnish in the end. I find that matte dulls the color too much for my liking.
What is your substrate and how do you keep it flat??
I used Strathmore Mixed Media 184 lb Paper-it’s their 400 series and it takes all the medium really well. If it gets a bit curly, I just bend it back into place.
what glue dit you use. do the work curl up when dry.
I use Golden Satin Glazing Liquid. I use heavy duty mixed media paper Strathmore 400 series-It can curl a bit but bends easily back into place.
