I was just preparing to donate a large portion of my soft pastels because I was not using them in collage and this was a wonderful reason to share some but keep a small portion for the future use in my collages. Plus, I will share this idea with my students and remind them to subscribe to your channel for more ideas to improve. Thanks
Glad we saved the pastels! And I felt he same way-I want to use them more but didn’t know how to incorporate them into my collage-until now! Thanks for passing my channel along to others, that’s so kind. Xoxo
Just tried this for myself and I can report that the pastel 90% did not move. I sealed it again, but this time tinted the gloss with a tiny bit of panes gray. It turned out just lovely and reminds me of colors that Degas would have used in his paintings🌺🌺. Will you be having a holiday sale on any of your classes this Christmas Marabeth? I saved up last Christmas and took your painted papers class and learned so much. I am hoping to try the floral for a present to myself this year.
I bet the medium tinted with payne’s gray was very beautiful! I may have a Black Friday sale-are you on my email list so you can hear about it? You can sign up here if you’re not: view.flodesk.com/pages/64daa55f8457bad1915890c1
Amazing!! And the way you actually PULL the flowers and leaves OUT OF THEMSELVES with the glazing liquid on the second step!! 😮 Fun to watch and I can't wait to try it!! Thanks Marabeth!! ~❤~ 😊
wowww that is such a beautiful piece of art! I'll sure try this technique since I have what it takes... I just don't have the talent of painting such beautiful flowers like you do... Thank you so much for sharing!
I’m self-taught so my whole career has been an experiment from the first moment 😆 and I’m excited to see how I’ll use them too! I haven’t had a chance to do so yet…
This is brilliant! I had always set my pastels, but by picking up a layer of matte medium from the gel plate, but I love how you did this with the brush and blended it out. My favorite part was the saturating the rest of the sheet in the color and how the treated areas acted as a resist. Fabulous!! I love your work btw. Thank you for sharing this technique.
Oh my gosh that is brilliant! ❤ I have had good success doing pan pastels on a gelli plate and then pulling the print with matte medium, but never thought of doing it this way. While I was watching you, I decided to try a variation on that theme. So I scribbled some pastel on a piece of wet strength tissue paper and then put matte medium on the gelli plate and will see what happens when it dries.!!😅
Looks great. I guess that would work with watered down matte or gloss medium instead of glazing medium 🤔...will have to try that out. Thanks for the heads up..❤
I took your Beginning Collage Class. Love it! Can you provide a video about making watercolor and gouche flowers on collage paper. I saw a snippet but would love to see more so I can re-watch over and over. I have so many mixed media supplies and would love to make unique collage papers. Thanks for all of your videos! Hope you will write a book one day. ~Terri 😊 Alabama
I’ll keep that video idea in mind, thanks! I tend to make videos about whatever I’m working on at the time. You might really enjoy my Layered Botanical class-it is ALL about making watercolor, acrylic botanicals on different kinds of collage paper and then layering them. I don’t use gouache however, but I’m sure you could! If you’re interested in checking it out, here’s the link for info: marabethquinart.thinkific.com/courses/mixed-media-collage-and-the-layered-botanical
Of course you did-I am looking right at your name! Sorry about that-silly me! I’m so glad you’re getting going and let me know if I can help with anything :)
I wonder if it would move if you sprayed the medium on or if you put medium on a gel plate and laid the paper on it while it's wet. Anyway, nice to know these can be used in collage. Thanks.
Must try this !!! I love the pastel idea . Just wonder before I have a go , Will the paper rip when you put it in the color water ? Looks like a lot of water for the paper to hold up to it .
it depends on the paper. If you’re using something fragile like tissue, then you’d have to work fast and get it out carefully/quickly. I believe I was using either rice paper or this thicker teabag paper that I have, so I knew that it was sturdy and I could keep it in the water that long. It just takes experimenting with your papers to get to know what they can and can’t do.
Might try pastels, since this technique can make them usable. Thanks! Do you typically use the medical exam paper for your tissue, versus wet-strength tissue or deli paper?
Honestly, I’ve not used deli paper or wet-strength, but I know a lot of people do and love them. But I use the med exam paper in place of tissue now because it’s pretty comparable in a lot of ways, it’s more economical and I know exactly what I’m getting every time, unlike the tissue I order.
Yes, it would. I’ve only tried the Golden Glazing medium, but any acrylic medium will do the same thing, although they might have different textures, etc.
I’m sure it would, but like the pastel, it’s going to move around just a bit and you can’t paint over it a lot of times or you’ll lose the definition. It’s a learning curve, but you should try it!

My pleasure, Linda! Thanks for watching. 😊
Wonderful look! A really nice way to use pastels!
Thank you so much, I agree! I love the look of pastels.
Gorgeous! Great technique to preserve the pastel and be able to work over it with other layers
I totally agree-it opens up a lot of possibilities!

I've learned that all it takes is the courage to scribble instead of trying to draw a flower 😆 And thank you for the kind words!
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing Marabeth
My pleasure 🤗
Beautiful! Thank you!😊
My pleasure 😊
Thanks Marabeth!’
My pleasure, Denise!
super tip, marabeth. it is always wonderful to see your videos and learn something new. thanks for the lesson.

Thank you, Marabeth, for the great information!!!!!!!!!! Sondra Borrie
You are so welcome, Sondra!
You help me to learn to let go of the perfection and I appreciate it. This is beautiful.
I’m so glad to hear that, Sarah-I know that for me, it makes all the difference.
I’ve noticed my favorite artists tend to experiment which I love! The discoveries are priceless. I’d like to see how you will use these pieces.

I was thinking that also
Thanks!
Thank you SO much, Sally! Every bit really helps me continue to provide content and I truly appreciate your support. Xoxo
Thank you Marabeth! So far I have used " Firnis" ( varnish) to fix soft pastels. But that's much better. Thank you for sharing.
Glad it was helpful! I’m anxious to try them on a real painting.
Amazing!
Thank you! 🤗
Great idea to get a graphic mark style with dome watercolor effect. 🎉🎉
I agree, it was a lovely outcome on that experiement!
This is so helpful! Thanks Marabeth
So glad to hear it, Katherine!
Excellent content
Glad you think so! Thanks for watching 😊

Thanks so much!
Are u using a watercolor brush or synthetic for acrylic paint ? Thank you !
Honestly, I have no idea. 😆 I’m not very good at taking care of my brushes, I have to admit. I rarely spend a lot on brushes for that reason.
Could you do this on a canvas. This was very cool
I haven’t tried it, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work…
what brand of pastels are these?? The color is so vibrant. I looked on the Favorite Supplies list but didn't see any pastels
I used several different brands in the video, I believe. Probably some Sennelier or Rembrandt
❤

Will any acrylic medium work? For instance, I have matte fluid medium - will that work, too?
Yes, it would. I’ve only tried the Golden Glazing medium, but any acrylic medium will do the same thing, although they might have different textures, etc.
@@marabethquinart thanks!
Sorry to ask, is it a type of glue you seal the flowers?
It’s an acrylic medium. Golden Satin Glazing Liquid
@@marabethquinart thank you
Wonder if it would work with watercolor?
I've wondered that also for a while, but haven't had a chance to try it.
I’m sure it would, but like the pastel, it’s going to move around just a bit and you can’t paint over it a lot of times or you’ll lose the definition. It’s a learning curve, but you should try it!
Uh - a question: why did you dip the sheet into a water bath?
To tint that paper around the pastels-it was just the white rice paper, and so I used some dirty paint water to tint the background.
Are these soft oil pastels ? Not sure if there are more than one king 😮
Not oil pastels, just regular soft pastels that can come off like chalk.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🎨🇺🇸
Thank you!
You should emphasize the MEDIUM you are using.
I did, Gina-you must have missed that part. It’s Golden Satin Glazing Medium
