      He was defeated numerous times in increasingly embarrassing ways and then in the end was killed via a tactic that had no right to work, and if it did then someone else should have done it three-years earlier. We only got to see him actually be who he actually was outside the books in the 2d Clone Wars animation for like 10 minutes and that's just sad.

      The CIS did have non-droid infantry but sadly only for officers, shock troops and ship crews. If they balanced it out and truly unified the whole military might of their worlds in tangent with the droids then he could make an effective sword and shield tactic with such units. Droids should be the sword and the organics the shield, but also he must alter and switch between the two to keep the Republic off balance then it would be an interesting war following cause when you have different races with their own unique cultures, technology, language and strategy but molded and made as one with each gap covering one another with good coordination then it could work. Whether they could win the war this way I wouldn't say given that Dooku and Sidious ran the the show, but if they weren't there that is another story cause Grievous knows the weaknesses of his droids and while he will use them he will be open to command living breathing warriors and soldiers under his command.

      I think a large part of it is general space opera tropes clashing with reality. The former generally has robot armies not be super effective and act like organic ones because that would undermine the drama. It's really hard to get attached to individual pieces of equipment when they're the exact same as the next 2000 that are being pumped off the line. It's also really hard to take into account all the massive changes that a fully robotic army would result it: for starters, morale would go out the window for frontline troops. That takes out a ton of story potential, for stuff on the stress soldiers undergo or the morality of war. Robots wont question orders they think are immoral, they dont suffer psychological trauma like organics and they dont mutiny.

    Can you imagine Grievous sitting in his office - Using his 4 hands to multi-task to fill in spreadsheets, paperwork, forming fleets, battle groups, army rosters etc? With a big mug of cyborg coffee on his desk, he puts one pencil down, uses one hand to move it to his face mask - try to sip it, then throw it away as he remembers he doesn't drink coffee anymore - and continues working? Just doing all the organizational paperwork to get things sorted. Somehow it is an amusing thought to think of - General Grievous doing paperwork. General Grievous was the Supreme Commander of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. It's entirely military operated, both in battle and in logistics, in accordance with his strategies, doctrines, and directions. He can be compared, given his rank and role, with legendary real world Supreme Commanders like Georgy Zhukov and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
    I have quite a bit of confidence that Grievous could've won the war for the CIS if not for the fact that Palpatine constantly sabotaged or ordered a halt to Grievous' plans, technical developments, and advances (take for example the battle of Kamino... if not for the, almost certainly Palpatine sabotage, leaking of part of Grievous' call to the Republic he would've totally crippled the GAR morale in foul swoop). Grievous did a very good job with what he had available to him, especially considering he routinely had to go up against space wizards with magic powers (who almost always were the sole factor that ruined what would've otherwise been his victories). Grievous would be a nightmare to face as a commander in a conventional war (where there aren't any force users involved to save his opponents like a constant foil).

      Sure but the important part of Grievous was that even the jedi couldn't stop him, which terrified the entire galaxy. But TCW show intentionally contradicts this. Matthew Wood (Grievous' vocie actor) said in a featurette of one of the episodes that Grievous is good but when he comes across a Jedi he is "backed up against the wall" because of "stupid droids". Which then contradicts Grievous' reputation as a jedi killer and the threat of droids as a whole to the galaxy, because where did the chaos come from then?

    Yeah, a lot of Clone Wars content, not just the TV series, usually tends to focus so much on Grevious combat abilities on the ground and his Jedi killing skills that I too didn't realize how much of a tactical genius he was being able to bring all these elements together. Although, when most battles play out as both sides sending their troops at each other and trying to kill them all there's really not that much nuance in strategy. Sure there are usually primary targets like bases and Droid Foundries, but they usually just blast their way to them or have a diversion so a small team can sneak in to take over or blow it up.

    Speaking of thrawn and grevious, this is how a full scale military battle I think would play out between them. Grevious would brutally murder a chunk of thrawns troops, his droid bodyguards following his lead. Thrawn would strengthen his reinforcements analysing grevious for a way too defeat him little did he know that grevious was doing the same. YOU COWARD COME AND FIGHT ME LIKE A MAN!!!! grevious would roar at the top of his voice. Thrawn would swing down punching grevious hard in the face. The metallic warrior was barely fazed. Thrawn barely dodged a violent lightsabers swing from grevious, and attempting to kick grevious. As quick and agile as a falcon grevious grabs his leg. Thrawn struggles pathetically but grevious has a iron grip. Literally. Grevious wildly swings his lightsabers decapitateing thrawn. He commands his men to obliterate any surviving troops.

    @DesolatedChild018 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    “Except for the legendary Grand Admiral Thraw, whose only weakness was the lack of natural resistance to knives”
    AAAAAAND that’s my biggest problem with OG Thraw. For how much people complain about self-inset I think that Thraw gets too much of a pass on that. I understand why, he is a fascinating character, specially at the time the Thraw Trilogy came (and still today actually) when the only depicted Imperial officers were either practically robots (some literally) that followed 01 logic of obedience, and when demonstrated some character trait it would be either petty personal ambition and pride or fear, and not even fear of the Rebellion, but fear of punishment from someone above the chain of command.
    Then came Thraw. A complex personality and a almost “benevolent dictator”, a “enlightened despot” of sorts. Someone that led by example, that didn’t killed his subordinates for failing but showed them how to learn with their mistakes, someone that was interested in studying art and philosophy, so that he could understand the cultures he was fighting, and whom didn’t run on “scorched earth” upon victory, but welcomed the surrendering systems into his own mini-empire. He also came from a different background, had to fight his way to the top against all the prejudices of Imperial Hierarchy against non-humans and joined the Empire due to a, at the very least, sympathetic motivation. And, of course, was basically invincible on the battlefield. You almost want him to be the protagonist. And, in a sense, he kinda is. He is more of a anti-hero than a villain. And I’m with all of you, I love him, and wished he was better integrated into canon.
    BUT
    He is undoubtedly too perfect. I don’t even know if he have any character flaw, aside from being on the opposite side of the heroes. That’s why his defeat and last minute death came so much out of nowhere to me. Felt like he wasn’t defeated by the heroes, but by “chance”, and by “chance” I mean, plot armor. Because it was the only way it could have happened. He didn’t had much of a flaw that the characters could exploit to beat him. And yes, this element makes it for the perfect villain! In the first moments... The protagonists would have to learn how to beat him, and they cannot do if he doesn’t merely “appear to be invincible” but IS basically invincible. Otherwise, what’s the merit?
    If I would re-introduce him into canon, I would give him some weakness/flaw of emotional nature. Maybe give him the “Holmes flaw” (the Arthur Doyle OG Holmes) even with his “theoretical understanding” of others, he is too analytical and cold to comprehend true emotional fidelity, which is the only thing Leia, Han and Luke have it better. Idk.
    That’s always a “impopular opinion” I had, but if you bring it up you get dogpilled, because it’s either full love to the character or the minimal criticism is viewed as “hating him”. But calm down, I DO love the character.

    • @yagdtigercommander
      @yagdtigercommander 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@darthguilder1923 Also it was suppose to help with micro management a General cannot commander each individual soldier to do certain battle tactics so by having lower ranking droid commanders it would help with micro managment. As a General typical has to command the whole theater of engagement focus on the big picture and not get distracted by small details. As that is for the lesser Commanders to lead their battalions within in the army. Then to for the Junior officers to lead the platoons and the ncos to make effective use of each squad. That is where the Clone army excelled at it allowing for a highly mobile and effective fighting force.
      But the main issue was most of the Battle Droid commanders were bases of the B1 series making for rather weak and commanding figures at least post battle of naboo in the clone wars show. They were neither Charismatic or intimidating like general grevious himself. One example is a B1 tank Commander tells his subordinate tank commanders that we can't fit through these natural barriers as they are hunting master yoda and his clone body guards during a mission to meet the king of wato's people or something. Instead one his tank ncos is like nah were good we can fit. The AAT Driver Floors it and the tank crash's ejecting the b1 nco from his tank. The commander was like next listen orders sigh. Like wheres your Husbah your balls droid commander. Or resorting to insulting your warship gunner because he can't hit shit when the commander could have shown him how to be better his job lol.
      And Tactical Droids weren't to common and well their Super Tactical Droid Counter parts were a very rare sight to. What would made it a lot easier if the CIS invested heavily in command versions of B2 super battle droids. Although portrayed as slow moving derp's in the show. Well Republic commando show and attack of the clones to extent really shows these lumbering droids ruthlessness not only to the enemy but their B1 comrade in arms to. So having a B2 commander variants would have helped a lot also would spare grevious from having to destroy any useless and annoying b1 all the time. He could simply watch one his B2 subordinate commanders do it for him for his amusement lol. Then Dooku wouldn't have been on his case all the time about the Battle Droid budget lol. And will have same terrifying effect on the B1s to not step out of line or give any back sass lmao allowing for more B1s to be focused on the mission or tasks at hand and less time being annoying and complaining about everything and anything.
      Lol Clones were organic troopers with more thoughts and emotions than any battle droid. Yet they were more combat effective and disciplined then any confederacy droid. I am beginning to understand why general grevious wasn't always the most patient commander or lack a good sense of humour at times. Some I am getting the feeling that Old Sheev was up to his dirty tricks again lol.

    While I can agree Grievous would have made an astounding HR Manager, I can't agree he made a particularly good Supreme Commander. Yes, he got the component parts working together. But he failed to place any value on any component. He was often arrogant and allowed for preventable losses, just for his own escape or his own pride. His losses were complete or he made them so through Scorched Earth tactics. I know, he was supposed to, but it doesn't excuse the fact someone should have noticed with him in charge, there's no point in winning. War is not about battles or heroes, it's about what is left and what was gained or lost. As a General, your concerns are rarely on which side retreated, but rather what was the cost to the gain. Wars are fought over many fronts, and winning a significant battle, that cost you everything in the end may be remembered, but means nothing, other than maybe a rally cry or inspiration in desperate times.
    Additionally, diversifying for the sake of doing so rarely gives you any particular advantage. Replacing half your miners in a mine with accountants and truck drivers, probably will not increase that mines production. Some missions work better with a singular strength. A battleship is something you can not ignore, hence a single battleship can tie up massive amounts of resources. The Allied air campaign over Germany could have been much more devastating if they dropped troops and tanks to inflict civilian, logistic, and morale damage with the bombs and pamphlets, but the loss of resource would have made the idea counter intuitive. Yet, that is every one of Grievous'es strategies. His campaigns leave nothing to fight over, and most of the time, the CIS were fighting battles for personal sovereignty from an overarching, despotic and nepotistic imperialist republic, meaning most of the battles were defensive and where these people lived, with some exceptions. (Ryloth and depending how you feel about Quarren, Mon Cal technically) So, Scorched Earth, bad.
    Yes, Grievous is a good bean counter and would have made a great advisor, but without placing your resource in context to your objectives, it means nothing. An Imperial Star Destroyer not using its standard ties as mobile AA guns is not properly using that resource. As is abandoning an entire ship full of battle droids when the battle turns slightly, why even have them ?

    One only has to watch the 2d Clone Wars and see his accomplishments during Durge's Lance to understand Grievous's genius in battle strategy.

    Grievous was shown to be a true military leader and born leader in original Legends material so much so that even Dooku And Sidious took him very seriously yeah.

    I wish grievous would have become a bounty hunter. It makes no sense that that force use asajj ventress gets to become a bounty hunter without being tracked down for war crimes.

    The clone wars did make grievous out to be a little incompetent, but it also showed him using great tactics and leading devastating missions. The only thing wrong was that he would get Jedi who fought against him several times thrown against him. It also shows the ingenuity of him by being able to out smart many Jedi and other high ranking people

      That's why I call him retreating as a "strategic retreat" because he knows that fighting a losing battle isn't worth the effort.

    Without Sidious's master great plan, with Grievous being the Supreme Commander of the CIS military, the Republic should have been crushed to it's core.
